PB hotel design editorial

Laugavegur, Reykjavík's oldest commercial street, has been the city's social spine since the nineteenth century, and the white-rendered neoclassical facades visible from its corner address give Sand Hotel by Keahotels an architectural rootedness that newer Icelandic properties rarely achieve. The building's pediments, arched doorways, and symmetrical fenestration place it firmly in the tradition of early twentieth-century Reykjavík civic architecture — a register the hotel's forty-rooms-across-four-floors conversion has been careful not to overwhelm. Where the street-level facade retains its period composure, the Sandholt bakery occupying the ground-floor corner adds an effortlessly local texture, pavement tables and all. Inside, the interiors move between two distinct registers. Guest rooms in the heritage section draw on a restrained European language — button-tufted upholstered headboards in dove grey velvet, herringbone timber floors, dark-framed standing mirrors, and globe pendants in ribbed glass that diffuse a warm amber light against sage-washed walls. Accent cushions in ikat-inspired weaves and teal velvet ottomans with brass nailhead trim introduce colour without disrupting the quieter base palette. The lobby and restaurant spaces shift the tone considerably: a steel-and-dark-timber staircase, polished-concrete flooring in a parquet lay, floral-upholstered barrel chairs alongside raw petrified wood stumps used as side tables, and large-format pendant globes suspended at varying heights. It is an interior that holds the old building's dignity while allowing the common spaces considerably more latitude.

"Let’s start with breakfast: High protein💪tasty😋Icelandic 🇮🇸yogurt loved by me, my brother and dad.Fresh , delicious , mini croissants 🥐, although small it was okay as it was a included, unlimited buffet breakfast highly rated by my brother because he eats a lot of food🫢🐷.Coffee nice enough although nothing special but good☕️. English tea not amazing although I may just have high expectations of tea. Donuts tasty and I and my brother ate lots of them 🍩🍩🍩. The ginger shots were new to me and were definitely an eye opener 🫚🤪😁🥃. Now the room: As a person who can’t stand mess or unclean areas and who never stops cleaning 🧼🧽🫧this place was up to my standards!!! The floors were heated which was a great treat after a chilly day in Reykjavík. The beds comfortable and fell asleep extremely quick. Showers did their job, no complaints 🛀. In the room there was also a useful safe, a mini fridge, a desk, a phone, a coffee machine and a speaker. The windows also had a pretty decent view. About the staff: All the staff who we encountered with were polite, helpful, kind and loyal as expected even the ones working the late and early shifts ❤️ Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the sand hotel Reykjavík!!! Thank you !"

"Convenient location, nearby restaurants, walking distance to attractions, great breakfast. The hotel is located between two streets, Laugavegur (main shopping and restaurant row) and Grettisgata. Grettisgata is on the 2nd level of the hotel, while Laugavegur is on the 1 st level. There is no driving on Laugavegur, so transport and drop off are usually done in the rear on Grettisgata. Rooms are small, but functional. Not a lot of room to open suitcases without setting them on the bed, but other than that, we enjoyed our stay."

"My husband and I just spent two nights at the Sand Hotel and loved it. The central location is perfect for sightseeing and is also close to numerous shops and restaurants. Every thing we wanted to see was in walking distance. The room was charming, comfortable and quiet, the breakfast delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay here when we visit Reykjavik again."

"The location is A+. You really couldn’t ask for a better spot in Reykjavik. It’s a great address and a great location to explore the city from. The service met our expectations. The staff was attentive, easy going and welcoming. But this is not a luxury hotel. Not even close. Not by a mile. The physical property is tired and desperately needs a renovation. Our room showed significant wear, the hallways were beat up, and the overall condition of the hotel did not match the images or positioning on their website. We also never had consistently hot water in our room. Sometimes it was warm, other times it was cold. The shower door is so poorly designed that every shower resulted in water all over the bathroom floor. The towels were old and scratchy. There weren’t even cups in the room for water. And the bedside tables were so small that the lamps basically took up the entire surface. You could barely fit an iPhone next to them. None of this made the stay a catastrophe, but add it all up and I’m not sure how Sand is being marketed as a boutique luxury hotel. To me, it’s closer to a premium business hotel with a great address. Call it boutique if you want, but there is nothing luxury about the current condition of this hotel. The location is exceptional and the service is solid. Renovate the hotel and Sand could be a great place to stay in Reykjavik. But in its current condition, we won’t stay here again."
