PB hotel design editorial

At Reykjavík's Old Harbour, where fishing trawlers and whale-watching vessels still come and go against a backdrop of snow-capped Esja, a pair of dark-clad towers clad in charred timber-effect panels and blackened concrete rise with a quiet authority that feels genuinely Icelandic rather than imported. The Reykjavik EDITION opened in 2021, designed by architect Bassi Carriers with interiors overseen by Ian Schrager's team, and the 253-room property earns its place on the waterfront by taking its material cues from the surrounding landscape rather than ignoring it. Inside, the approach shifts from Nordic severity to something warmer and more eclectic. Guest rooms carry the signature EDITION palette — oak headboards, textured grasscloth wall coverings, and striped wool throw blankets in earthy ochres and rusts that reference the volcanic geology visible through the floor-to-ceiling harbour windows — while midcentury lounge chairs in sculpted walnut add a quietly Scandinavian note. The restaurant is the most architecturally resolved space: a coffered oak ceiling of deep interlocking beams creates a structural canopy above a central octagonal marble bar, flanked by illuminated wine walls and banquettes upholstered in teal. A rooftop terrace furnished with cast-iron bistro chairs faces directly toward Faxaflói Bay, the Snæfellsnes peninsula visible on clear evenings — a view that makes the architecture's restraint feel exactly right.

"A top hotel experience for me and my family. We just left The Reykjavik EDITION and I couldn’t wait to write a glowing review about our 5 day stay. The people who work here MADE it outstanding. Demarco, Angel, Igor and John and many other staff members went above and beyond for my family, especially our young son with celiac. I can’t thank them enough for their care. The hotel is perfectly situated - walkable to shopping, key bus stops and major landmarks. We enjoyed Tides for breakfast every morning. The rooms are very comfortable, large and pristine. Iceland was a dream vacation and I’m grateful for our choice in hotel. Can’t wait to return!"

"To say that The Edition Hotel in Reykjavik is perfectly located, with views of the harbor where you can see all manner of boats coming and going, and that the hotel is a short walk to restaurants and shops, and a longer, scenic walk to the university, is enough to make me happy. The building itself pulls you inside. The soft lighting, the elegant furnishing, and the circular fireplace, spare and modern, manage to achieve a particular warmth. It is a place where a tired traveler can land, be fed a superior meal, soak in a warm pool, be wrapped in a soft robe, and rest in a bed that makes drifting into sleep effortless. But to say all this without mentioning the kind and thoughtful people who are employed there would be to leave out the very best that The Edition has to offer. From the moment I arrived, my needs were anticipated and generously met. Morgan and Lidiana answered my numerous questions and helped me to set up a whale-watching tour (on the fast boat!). Morgan suggested stopping for lobster soup at The Seabaron, and it was as great as he said it would be. I should mention that this was my first solo trip out of my country. My husband was supposed to join me, but unfortunately, he could not. I came to attend a workshop at the university, and so was a reluctant solo traveler. Morgan and Lidiane were instrumental in my being able to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate. The Edition has a lovely group of kind and generous souls who make this lovely hotel an ethereal place. The staff celebrated my first solo trip and made it memorable in a way I could never have imagined and will never forget. I have carried their warmth home with me, and my world is better for it."

"Our experience at the Edition was 10/10 ~ from the moment we arrived until check out. The staff were amazing and so friendly! We spent one night here after driving the ring road and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere of the hotel was great from the lobby bar, to the roof and the Tides restaurant. The food and drinks were fantastic. The room was super cozy and the bed was very comfortable - we loved it. After dinner we arrived back to our room with a lovely hand written note and two face masks for us to try out. The spa was such a nice touch and we spent half of the afternoon there. In the morning we went to the cafe which was delicious and walked along the water. We hope to be back soon!!!"

Without any hesitation, and I’m picky, I would highly recommend the Reykjavík Edition. Truly helped to make our vacation in Iceland a wonderful experience!"
