PB hotel design editorial

At Reykjavík's Old Harbour, where fishing trawlers and whale-watching vessels still come and go against a backdrop of snow-capped Esja, a pair of dark-clad towers clad in charred timber-effect panels and blackened concrete rise with a quiet authority that feels genuinely Icelandic rather than imported. The Reykjavik EDITION opened in 2021, designed by architect Bassi Carriers with interiors overseen by Ian Schrager's team, and the 253-room property earns its place on the waterfront by taking its material cues from the surrounding landscape rather than ignoring it. Inside, the approach shifts from Nordic severity to something warmer and more eclectic. Guest rooms carry the signature EDITION palette — oak headboards, textured grasscloth wall coverings, and striped wool throw blankets in earthy ochres and rusts that reference the volcanic geology visible through the floor-to-ceiling harbour windows — while midcentury lounge chairs in sculpted walnut add a quietly Scandinavian note. The restaurant is the most architecturally resolved space: a coffered oak ceiling of deep interlocking beams creates a structural canopy above a central octagonal marble bar, flanked by illuminated wine walls and banquettes upholstered in teal. A rooftop terrace furnished with cast-iron bistro chairs faces directly toward Faxaflói Bay, the Snæfellsnes peninsula visible on clear evenings — a view that makes the architecture's restraint feel exactly right.

"Our flight was canceled last night to Iceland. I had no way of getting there. This is all weather related. I contacted The Edition Reykjavik and they would not allow me to cancel the hotel as it was no longer in the window to cancel. This seems totally unreasonable and with no empathy whatsoever. Clearly, they are not committed to the customer or hospitality. This is really unfortunate. I would be careful booking this hotel my friends."

"This is a lovely hotel located directly on the old harbour. Staff were wonderful and went out of their way to make sure we always felt cared for - the Assistant Front Desk manager (she really went far beyond expectations) was particularly caring. The views from the restaurant for breakfast and dinner were spectacular, the food was excellent, and the staff, again, was very attentive. The location is central, and it is easy to walk to all the major shopping, dining, and attractions that are in downtown and the harbor area. If we are ever lucky enough to go back to Iceland, we would hope to stay here again. Other things, my wife had a 75-minute massage (book long before you arrive) and was very happy with it. If you book the hotel as part of a package, make sure you bring the confirmation showing what should be included, as the hotel staff may not have been informed, but they will make things right as soon as they are aware."

"The experience was amazing. First time to Iceland. The location is perfect, close to all kinds of shops and different dining experiences all within walking distance. Gorgeous view of the water and mountains. The hotel can book excursions, the bus stops are very near the hotel and they have a call list for the Northern Lights. The staff is fantastic, so friendly and helpful. Cannot say enough, a must stay."

"DONT STAY HERE- deceitful billing. They cheated us our of $1700. double billed us for 2 rooms said we had double booked, we cleared that up at check in but when we left had double charges hit the card. hard to resolve from the US. disputed and fought but they just stuck it to us. Read the fine print, they also have a deceitful "Resort Fee" but you can't use it for breakfast, or in the lobby, or the Cafe or the roof top...only if you eat lunch or dinner at the overpriced restaurant, so if you eat out in town or on an outing tough luck they keep your $50 fee. Way overpriced and snooty service and they don't honor any Marriot status or benefits (so no free breakfast, no room upgrades, no lounge, just lots of extra hidden fees) STAY AWAY"
