PB hotel design editorial

At Reykjavík's Old Harbour, where fishing trawlers and whale-watching vessels still come and go against a backdrop of snow-capped Esja, a pair of dark-clad towers clad in charred timber-effect panels and blackened concrete rise with a quiet authority that feels genuinely Icelandic rather than imported. The Reykjavik EDITION opened in 2021, designed by architect Bassi Carriers with interiors overseen by Ian Schrager's team, and the 253-room property earns its place on the waterfront by taking its material cues from the surrounding landscape rather than ignoring it. Inside, the approach shifts from Nordic severity to something warmer and more eclectic. Guest rooms carry the signature EDITION palette — oak headboards, textured grasscloth wall coverings, and striped wool throw blankets in earthy ochres and rusts that reference the volcanic geology visible through the floor-to-ceiling harbour windows — while midcentury lounge chairs in sculpted walnut add a quietly Scandinavian note. The restaurant is the most architecturally resolved space: a coffered oak ceiling of deep interlocking beams creates a structural canopy above a central octagonal marble bar, flanked by illuminated wine walls and banquettes upholstered in teal. A rooftop terrace furnished with cast-iron bistro chairs faces directly toward Faxaflói Bay, the Snæfellsnes peninsula visible on clear evenings — a view that makes the architecture's restraint feel exactly right.

"This is our second visit to Iceland in three years, and once again we chose to stay at The Edition. We truly love this hotel—not only for its stunning views of Harpa and the harbor, but also for the exceptional staff who consistently make our stay so memorable. I was so delighted to see Joy again at the front desk!  I remembered her from our first visit because of her warm, welcoming personality, and she once again made our check-in experience seamless and enjoyable. Morgan, the concierge, provided invaluable recommendations and thoughtful guidance as we planned our 10-day itinerary. We are incredibly grateful for his insight and genuine hospitality. We also had the pleasure of dining at Tide, the hotel’s Michelin Guide restaurant. Veronica has taken care of us since day one—she remembered our preferences, brought a wonderful sense of humor, and made every dining experience feel personal and special. After our daily adventures, we looked forward to unwinding at the hotel’s beautiful and tranquil spa. Frances was especially kind and attentive, adding to the overall sense of relaxation and comfort. Upon our arrival, Angel greeted us with the warmest smile and kindly assisted us with our luggages and car. His genuine care and attentiveness made us feel immediately welcomed and set the tone for our stay. Every member of the Edition team contributed to making our stay truly exceptional. We are already looking forward to returning again."

"Your trip to Iceland isn't complete without a stay at The Reykjavik EDITION. I was blown away at every turn. The moment we arrived we were greeted with hospitality and warmth. The room was designed with an intentional nod to its nordic roots-impeccably modern but also delightfully cozy. The bathroom featured heated floors and a luxurious waterfall shower. The complimentary spa was the icing on the cake of this stay and included a sauna, steam room, and hot tub. I was relaxed from the moment we arrived. The staff here went above and beyond in many ways from a sweet note and gift left in our room to helping us troubleshoot when our rental car wouldn't start. Shout out to Dimitar, Daniel, and Oskar who made our stay extra special. I can't recommend this hotel enough."

"The brunch/lunch was served at 1 to 3 PM still the menu contained a numbet of egg dishes. Food wss good but the music was much too loud, leading to the waiters repeatedly taking wrong orders and making it difficult to converse. Asked twice for music to be turned down, but that was not done. Coffee was included in the price, but contained 1/3 cup."

"This is a great hotel. The room was great, the food was great. The staff offered good recommendations for food in the area, but the hotel also has good food for both breakfast and dinner. There is also a nice spa in the hotel. The only drawback is that it is difficult to find the entrance by car, but otherwise the location is in the center of town, and is very good."

"We arrived early after leaving our South Iceland accommodations early because of a winter storm and the hotel was lovely in letting us check-in/take our luggage while we went to a museum. Our room was ready a bit afternoon and we got to relax for a bit before dinner. Everything was lovely and clean with the signature Edition scent. We were able to visit the lobby bar for drinks and dinner for our 7 year old. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and helpful. The worst part was that we had to leave in less than 24 hours. Hopfully we can come back soon."
