PB hotel design editorial

Designed by Ramesh Khosla and completed in 1976, the building that became ITC Mughal sits within a sprawling landscape conceived as a direct conversation with the Mughal garden tradition — the charbagh's geometry of water channels, terraced lawns, and shaded pathways translated into a contemporary resort spread across twenty-three acres just south of the Taj Mahal, whose white marble dome is visible from the rooftop tower. The exterior is Agra's red sandstone vocabulary reinterpreted in exposed brick, the facades entirely consumed by climbing vines that soften what might otherwise register as a heavy institutional massing into something closer to a ruin reclaimed by its own gardens. The pool terrace, framed by white-painted pergolas and brick colonnades, channels the same Mughal hydraulic logic — water at ground level, shade overhead, geometry underfoot in a herringbone brick pattern laid with precise informality. Inside the 233 rooms, two distinct registers operate. The standard rooms carry ivory-toned arched headboard panels referencing Mughal architectural detailing, dark granite floors anchored by red floral dhurrie rugs, and warm teak furniture with brass fittings — colonial-inflected but grounded in local craft. The suite bathrooms move toward a cleaner contemporary language: travertine-clad soaking tubs open to the sleeping area through timber-framed partitions, with corrugated metal wall panels and vessel sinks on floating walnut vanities. The restaurant Peshawri, with its rough-cut limestone walls, dark timber ceiling beams, and copper thali service, evokes a North-West Frontier caravanserai with a conviction that few period-referencing hotel restaurants manage to sustain.

"Our stay at ITC Mughal, Agra to celebrate our son's second birthday was nothing short of extraordinary. Words truly fall short in describing the warmth, hospitality, and genuine care that the entire team extended to us. This wasn't just a hotel stay—it became a memory that our family will cherish forever. From the moment we checked in, we were made to feel incredibly special. A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Chetan (Resident Manager) for the thoughtful room upgrade and the beautiful birthday cake that was already waiting for us in our room. It was the perfect start to our celebration. What made the occasion even more unforgettable was that, during our stay, we ended up cutting five birthday cakes! Each one was a wonderful surprise and a reflection of the team's exceptional thoughtfulness. A special thank you to Gajendra Ji, Bhim Ji, and Sunil Ji for their impeccable service and for making sure every moment felt special. Rajkumar Ji (IRD) added another delightful surprise with the fifth cake, making us feel truly valued and celebrated. The culinary experience was equally outstanding. My sincere gratitude to Chef Kunal and Chef Satyaveer, who prepared some of the most delicious dishes we have ever enjoyed. Every meal was exceptional and reflected their passion for excellence. The Dal & Butter Nan at Peshwari was a lot better than at Bukhara. A very special mention to Prisha, who created an adorable teddy bear made entirely from pancakes for our son. It was incredibly creative, beautifully presented, and brought the biggest smile to his face. It was one of the sweetest gestures we've ever experienced at any hotel. The hospitality extended beyond the restaurants as well. Ashok and Satyaveer, the lifeguards at the swimming pool, were simply amazing. Their attentiveness and genuine concern for guests' well-being were remarkable. While we were using the steam room, they came to check on us every 10 minutes to ensure everything was fine. I have stayed at many luxury hotels, but I have never experienced such a high level of care and personal attention. Every member of the ITC Mughal team went above and beyond to make our son's birthday unforgettable. Their warmth, professionalism, and attention to the smallest details transformed a simple birthday celebration into a truly magical experience. Thank you once again to the entire team at ITC Mughal, Agra. We arrived as guests but left feeling like family. We can't wait to return and create many more beautiful memories."
