PB hotel design editorial

Every room at The Oberoi Amarvilas was positioned by design to face the same direction — toward the Taj Mahal, visible from the arched Mughal windows as a white marble presence floating above the tree line, never more than 600 metres away. That singular editorial decision, made when the hotel was conceived in the late 1990s and opened in 2003, determined everything: the terraced massing of the sandstone-coloured facade, the stepped gardens descending toward the pool, even the orientation of the four-poster beds. Designed by the Delhi-based firm Arcop under the creative direction that shaped much of the Oberoi group's late-period properties, the 102-room building draws its formal vocabulary from Mughal palace architecture — cusped arches, chattri pavilions, inlaid pietra dura detailing, colonnaded pool terraces in cream Dholpur stone — without retreating into pastiche. The interiors sustain the same register throughout. Guest rooms are furnished with teak four-poster beds, hand-knotted silk and wool carpets in soft purples and aquas, carved writing desks, and upholstered headboards dressed in raised floral fabric — craftsmanship sourced almost entirely from Agra's own artisan traditions. The dining room, Esphahan, wraps its teak-panelled walls with gilded jali screens and hangs large Venetian-glass chandeliers above cane-back chairs, the Taj framed in the arched windows behind as if it were part of the composition — which, at Amarvilas, it always is.

About

The Taj Mahal is extraordinary as much for what it is as how it has escaped the banality of cliché. For 350 years, this monument evokes a sense of wonder. Only by being there can you witness its true majesty, its symmetry, its setting and the delicacy of its carved marble inlaid with precious stones. Now just suppose you were to overlook it from your hotel room? The Oberoi Amarvilas is 600 meters from this tribute to love. The lavish interiors and elaborate gardens add to the serenity of the scene. The guestrooms are palatial: all have magical views and are luxuriously furnished with traditional fabrics, white marble, hand-crafted ornaments and every modern amenity. There is a luxury spa offering, a swimming pool, an ornamented ballroom, and fine restaurants to suit the international palate. The lobby lounge is a feast for the eye designed, as it was, around that glorious view of the Taj Mahal. The hotel is also equipped with Electric Vehicles Charging Stations.

"We recently stayed at The Oberoi Agra, and it was an exceptional experience from beginning to end. Very likely this was the best hotel & resort experience we’ve ever had traveling for ~50 years around 6 continents! Many things stood out. Our view of the Taj Mahal from our room was breathtaking! Each time we looked out our patio door or windows we had to stop and gaze at the magnificent view, And the resort’s grounds are almost equally stunning and gorgeous. Our room & large balcony overlooked the beautiful pool and finely manicured grounds and the 600 ft expanse to the Taj. And the entire layout of the grounds and resort are beautiful and stunning. Our room was spotless, spacious, and very well-appointed with excellent amenities. The hotel has a quiet atmosphere with a modern yet classic & luxurious feel throughout. And the staff’s professionalism and care went to a level never experienced before. Over the last day or so of our stay we were gifted a small, beautiful marble elephant and a marble keepsake box, both great touches and examples of Oberoi Agra going above and beyond. It was amazing to stay at Oberoi. In fact, my wife asked if there were any other Oberoi in the cities we would be visiting and there was in downtown Mumbai. And while the experience and view are understandably different between this Agra resort and Mumbai, we were equally pampered and had above and beyond service and dining that continued what we had experienced at Oberoi Agra. So, we have a newfound hotel group to look for when we are traveling!"

"We very much enjoyed our stay at Oberoi Amarvillas, the staff went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable, the view of the Taj Mahal is amazing and the rooms are slightly old-fashioned, but clean and cozy. Special mentions: Our tourguide to Taj Mahal Kishore did an amazing job, grat fluency in english, very ineresting inputs and a great photagrapher as well, we overly enjoyed it. Our driver Ankul who drove us to and around Agra went above and beyond to accomodate our wishes and we felt safe at all times. Our second driver Harbhajan who took us back to Deli and the 4h drive felt like it was nothing as we gained so many intersting insights into the culture and learned so much. All while feeling safe and well accomodated at all times."

"Outstanding hotel within views of the Taj Mahal, which is within easy walking distance. The golf cart shuttle was an added bonus. Hotel Staff and management were superb, and the restaurants also excellent. My excellent Taj Mahal guide, Sandeep, provided incredible insight during my sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal - very much appreciated also. Very highly recommended."
