Every room at The Oberoi Amarvilas was positioned by design to face the same direction — toward the Taj Mahal, visible from the arched Mughal windows as a white marble presence floating above the tree line, never more than 600 metres away. That singular editorial decision, made when the hotel was conceived in the late 1990s and opened in 2003, determined everything: the terraced massing of the sandstone-coloured facade, the stepped gardens descending toward the pool, even the orientation of the four-poster beds. Designed by the Delhi-based firm Arcop under the creative direction that shaped much of the Oberoi group's late-period properties, the 102-room building draws its formal vocabulary from Mughal palace architecture — cusped arches, chattri pavilions, inlaid pietra dura detailing, colonnaded pool terraces in cream Dholpur stone — without retreating into pastiche. The interiors sustain the same register throughout. Guest rooms are furnished with teak four-poster beds, hand-knotted silk and wool carpets in soft purples and aquas, carved writing desks, and upholstered headboards dressed in raised floral fabric — craftsmanship sourced almost entirely from Agra's own artisan traditions. The dining room, Esphahan, wraps its teak-panelled walls with gilded jali screens and hangs large Venetian-glass chandeliers above cane-back chairs, the Taj framed in the arched windows behind as if it were part of the composition — which, at Amarvilas, it always is.

"Literally a dream location to set as a base to visit the Taj Mahal. Not the hotel is breathtaking, and its staff is beyond what you would expect from a high luxury 5 star hotel, but the room views are just stunning. You’ll literally be hypnotized every time you look out the window and see the Taj Mahal. Make sure to book a guided tour to visit the Taj Mahal through the hotel. They have a private access with their own golf cart. And make also sure to request for the historian and photographer Sandeep as a guide. He guided us with great talent for storytelling as well great knowledge of the best points to take the best pictures with angles that almost make you look like you’re alone in a super crowded monument. Top notch!"

"Otherworldly experience waking up to view from balcony. Food great pool great massage great. Best of all is their staff. It's super expensive(for us anyway) and totally worth it. Stay 2 nights if you can, so you can just enjoy the hotel as well"

"While I have shared a separate review of our stay at The Oberoi Amarvilas—which was, without question, the best experience we have had at any hotel or resort to date—this is a special shoutout to Muzammil Hussain, the guide recommended by the Oberoi Amarvilas for our visit to the Taj Mahal. Keen to have as many formalities taken care of before our arrival, I reached out to Muzammil in advance. From the very first interaction, he was extremely professional, prompt, and meticulous in addressing all my queries, ensuring everything was well organized ahead of time. Across every aspect of the experience, we would rate Muzammil a 10 out of 10. There were absolutely no shortcomings—his communication was clear and proactive, his punctuality flawless, and his handling of logistics seamless. His insight and knowledge added tremendous value to the visit, he ensured we captured the best possible photographs, and he skillfully shielded us from constant solicitations by other service providers.
