PB hotel design editorial

Gujarat's extraordinary inheritance of stepwell architecture — those inverted temples of water where geometry descends in hypnotic symmetry toward a subterranean source — shapes the central atrium of ITC Narmada from the ground up. Completed in 2022 by Singapore-based practice SRSS (Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart International), who handled both architecture and interiors, the 19-storey, 291-key tower in Ahmedabad's Vastrapur district draws its formal references from the Adalaj Ni Vav stepwell, the intricate jali screens of the Sidi Syed Mosque's Tree of Life, and the classical Toran gateway that frames ceremonial entrances across the region. At 70 metres, it is the tallest luxury hotel in Gujarat, and its cream-stone base, arched colonnades, and wrought-iron balcony balustrades — visible in the images — give the lower floors a civic weight that the glazed tower above gradually relinquishes. Inside, the contrast between spaces is pronounced. The all-day dining room presents deep burgundy leather banquettes with brocade skirts, a draped Murano-style glass chandelier, and mural panels evoking Ahmedabad's colonial-era riverfront. The fine-dining room moves into warmer territory: walnut-toned timber panelling, gold-framed arched screens, medallion-patterned stone flooring, and upholstered chairs in copper-toned damask. Guest rooms sit at opposite ends of a tonal spectrum, some finished in pale champagne and aqua with boldly striped carpets, others carrying textured headboards, patchwork art panels in teal and gold, and ironwork balconies that frame the city skyline. ITC Narmada is also Gujarat's first LEED Platinum-certified hotel, its environmental credentials woven into a property that otherwise makes its ambitions felt through ornament rather than restraint.
