PB hotel design editorial

Thirteen acres of mature gardens in the middle of one of Asia's fastest-growing technology cities represents a remarkable act of territorial calm — and it is this green improbability that gives The Oberoi Bengaluru its defining character. Opened in 1986 on MG Road and expanded over subsequent decades to reach 159 rooms across a low-rise wings arranged in a broad L around the pool courtyard, the hotel was designed to keep the city's noise at a remove, its cream stucco facade stepping back behind rain trees and palms rather than asserting itself at the street edge. The evening pool photograph shows exactly how well this works: warm light spilling from arched colonnades at ground level, the upper floors receding into dusk, the garden absorbing the whole composition into something closer to a private estate than a commercial hotel. Inside, the interiors work a consistent vocabulary of dark-stained timber, quilted gold-toned bedcovers, and cobalt silk accent cushions against warm cream walls — a palette repeated across room categories with enough variation in outlook, some facing the garden directly through louvered teak shutters, to reward a considered room choice. The dining spaces extend the timber register: the indoor restaurant lined with tall arched windows framing dense tropical foliage, cane-backed chairs set at tables with rust-red linen, slow-turning ceiling fans preserving a colonial-inflected atmosphere that stops just short of nostalgia. The outdoor pavilion, sheltered beneath a deep-eaved tiled roof carried on heavy timber posts, pulls the garden directly into the meal.

"We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Oberoi! Everything was luxurious, yet hi tech. Most importantly, it's very very quiet inside (unlike most hotels today, who cannot isolate the city noise anymore). Wonderful and helpful staff as always Looking forward to our next stay :)"

"Our stay at The Oberoi, Bengaluru was nothing short of surreal and delightful. The property is beautiful — the lawns, gardens, water bodies and the majestic old tree near the pool add so much charm and calm to the experience. What made the stay truly special, though, was the warmth of the team. Chef Vishnu, Chef Khushi, Prateek, Jonaki, the wonderful lady at the coffee shop in a saree, the F&B team, in-room dining/butler team, and the chef at the Japanese/Chinese restaurant — everyone was hospitable, thoughtful and genuinely caring. A special thank you for doting on our 3-year-old son and making him feel like a little star. The room surprise and decoration were such a lovely touch. We were pleasantly surprised by how kid-friendly the hotel felt, with activities like the treasure hunt and fish feeding — would love to see even more children’s activities next time. Having recently stayed at Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, Ritz-Carlton Bali and Oberoi Lombok, we can honestly say The Oberoi Bengaluru stands right up there in hospitality and warmth. One small wish: the food menu could perhaps include more Oriental flavours — Vietnamese or Indonesian would be wonderful, though we may be biased after living in Indonesia for seven years! Thank you for a beautiful and memorable stay."

"Absolutely beautiful hotel. Lovely staff, ambience and gardens. Rooms are lovely. Room prices are as expected for a premium hotel. There was upgrading work going on during the day which was a nuisance but understandable. And there was a note in the room apologizing. Overall, a wonderful hotel. I will be back"

"Back in the 1990s I was very familiar with the Oberoi properties in India’s metropolitan cities and was extremely impressed with their service levels - I thought they could give the famed Ritz Carlton customer-centricity a run for their money even then! Today, they definitely outscore the Ritz. And the Bangalore property is no exception. Apart from what comes across as heartfelt hospitality from all their front & back office personnel, here are some examples of their habitually consummate deliveries: We were met at the airport after a late-night arrival, escorted to their Mercedes E-class where, en route to the hotel, our dinner order was taken (there was a menu in the seatback pocket). On arrival, check-in formalities were done in the suite itself, where the room-service dining cart was already laid out, resplendent with crockery and cutlery, and a hot box keeping the food warm. The fare was delectable. Communications with any part of the hotel is facilitated through “Oberoi Assist” on in-room tablet devices or on their WhatsApp business account (of course, there’s the phone as well). This digital / virtual butler service is near-perfect for any and every requirement: housekeeping, dining, concierge services, etc. What is truly impressive is the promptness of response — not just communication, but the actual delivery of the service requirement. There’s no paper in the room, other than stationery (which, in the old days - maybe still - used to be personalised for regulars or long-stay guests). Everything (instruction manuals, menus, city tourism, whatever) is on a couple of digital tablet devices in the room. They also have lighting controls, billing updates, butler (real) call… All in all, a lovely stay."
