PB hotel design editorial

Planted directly on the Bay of Bengal shoreline at Adyar, where Chennai's creek meets the open sea, a seventeen-storey neoclassical tower draws its architectural vocabulary from the Palladian palaces of South Indian royalty — arched colonnades, ornamental pilasters, and twin corner pavilions crowned with shallow domes rising above the waterline in cream and terracotta. The Leela Palace Chennai, which opened in 2011 with 326 rooms, was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Chettinad palace architecture, that grand tradition of merchant princes building lavishly in Tamil Nadu's interior districts, transposed here to the Bay's edge with a confidence that few urban beach hotels on India's east coast have attempted. The interiors carry the weight of that ambition carefully. Guest rooms are furnished with dark rosewood four-poster beds, handwoven silk bed runners in gold and amber, and Kalamkari and Tanjore artworks hung against panelled walls — the suite images show traditional paintings in jewel-toned frames, a direct nod to the temple town craft traditions of the region. The principal restaurant is perhaps the most arresting interior space: fluted dark-timber columns rise to a coffered ceiling above Venetian-glass chandeliers in deep crimson, the floor a warm travertine bordered by kilim-patterned inlay. Above the lower floors, a rooftop pool terrace is patterned with kolam-inspired motifs inlaid into the pool floor, illuminated at dusk against gilded bronze filigree screens lining the parapet — decorative metalwork that references the pierced jali screens of Dravidian temple architecture.

"I had a wonderful experience at The Leela Palace Chennai. The property is absolutely stunning, with elegant interiors and breathtaking sea views. Receptionist Piyush Grover upgraded us to a bigger room and also arranged a personal butler, Sanjana during our stay for all our needs. The rooms were spacious, luxurious, and impeccably maintained. What truly stood out was the warm hospitality. Every staff member was courteous, attentive, and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. The food was exceptional, with an excellent variety and outstanding quality. I would like to compliment Manager Shomali who manage to get us a seat during breakfast despite the crowd as they had an ongoing conference. Chef Aeleeya who helped to prepare jasmine rice and soup daily for my child who had dietary restrictions. Staff Poornima, Khushi were also very welcoming and made us comfortable during breakfast. A special thank you to our personal butler, Sanjana, for making our stay truly exceptional. She was incredibly warm, professional, and attentive to every detail, always anticipating our needs with a genuine smile. Her prompt service, thoughtful gestures, and dedication to ensuring our comfort made us feel truly valued. Sanjana's outstanding hospitality added a personal touch to our stay and made our experience at The Leela Palace Chennai even more memorable. She is a true asset to the hotel, and we sincerely appreciate everything she did for us. From the beautiful ambiance to the world-class service, every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations. I would highly recommend The Leela Palace Chennai to anyone looking for a luxurious and memorable experience. I look forward to visiting again!"

"It was an unforgettable stay due to the exceptional warmth and hospitality! From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. Everywhere we went, whether it was the pool, the bar, or the restaurants, the staff were consistently helpful, smiling, and genuinely kind. I would like to extend a special note of gratitude to a few individuals who made our stay truly remarkable: Mr. Israfil (Our Butler): He was always available at any hour, anticipating our needs and ensuring we had everything we required for a comfortable stay. He would regularly meet us and have a little chat. Sana "or Sara" (Housekeeping): My room was kept perfectly cleaned and impeccably organized throughout my stay. Wonderful attention to detail! Nishmi (Library Bar): Always welcoming with a pleasant quick chat, while we waited for our taxi. She also help us with some tips like how to set up local mobile apps. Chilling at the bar was always a highlight thanks to the incredible team. Pool Staff: There is a man who was putting towels on the chairs. I don't know his name but his extreme kindness caught our attention. If I ever have the chance to visit Chennai again, I will definitely be staying at The Leela Palace!"

"Our stay at this hotel was nothing short of magical—the most extraordinary hotel experience we have ever had. From the moment we arrived at the airport until the day we reluctantly said goodbye, every single detail was flawlessly taken care of. We never once had to worry about anything; instead, we simply felt welcomed, valued, and genuinely cared for. What truly makes this place exceptional is its people. Every member of the team greeted us with warmth, kindness, and sincere hospitality that came straight from the heart. Their smiles, attention to detail, and willingness to go the extra mile transformed our holiday into an unforgettable memory. The dining experience was outstanding. Every meal was a delight, offering an incredible selection of fresh, beautifully presented dishes that celebrated both local and international flavors. And waking up each morning to the breathtaking view of the ocean felt like living in a dream—one we wished would never end. A very special thank you goes to the incredible hotel team, and especially to the hotel driver Mr Parthiban who did far more than simply transport us. He introduced us to the soul of Chennai (formerly Madras) through an unforgettable tours filled with fascinating stories and local insight. Discovering one of India's oldest cities with someone so passionate and knowledgeable was one of the most meaningful parts of our journey. We were deeply moved by Chennai's unique spirit—a city where people of different faiths live side by side in harmony, embracing diversity with mutual respect and kindness. This hotel offers far more than luxury accommodations. It offers genuine hospitality, unforgettable experiences, and memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. It is a place where every guest is treated like family, and every moment feels special. We leave with grateful hearts and unforgettable memories. If you are searching for a destination that combines elegance, impeccable service, heartfelt hospitality, and authentic local experiences, you simply cannot find a better place. We recommend this hotel with all our hearts—and we are already dreaming of the day we can return."
