PB hotel design editorial

Perched 2,000 feet above Hyderabad on a rocky plateau in the Falaknuma district, the palace that Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra commissioned in 1884 and later surrendered to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mahbub Ali Khan, spent nearly a century in near-abandonment before Princess Esra of Hyderabad initiated its restoration in 2000. Taj Falaknuma Palace opened to guests in 2010 after a decade of painstaking work that required sourcing craftsmen trained in traditional Nizami stucco techniques, restoring Venetian chandeliers, and recovering period furniture that had been scattered across the royal household. The architecture is a confident hybrid — Italian marble colonnades and neoclassical arched loggias wrapping a massing that breaks into Mughal domes and pointed Indo-Saracenic arches at the roofline, a combination that made the palace one of the grandest private residences in nineteenth-century India. The interiors carry that same layered inheritance. Guest rooms fitted with four-poster beds draped in silk and floral cotton, exposed timber beam ceilings overhead, and warm hardwood floors recall the colonial-period aesthetic the Nizams absorbed with genuine enthusiasm. The dining room, visible in the images, deploys carved walnut cane-back chairs around formally dressed tables beneath a double-height coffered ceiling and a Murano glass chandelier — a room that could as easily be read as Edwardian London as Deccan royalty. Across 60 rooms and suites, the property sustains a convincing continuity between palace archive and hotel present, the two existing less as contrast than as conversation.

"Returning to Taj Falaknuma Palace for the second time in just a few months was an easy decision, largely because of Mr. Abid. After our previous stay, we had left with mixed feelings due to a housekeeping incident, but before we checked out, he sincerely apologized, assured us it would never happen again, and promised to personally oversee our next visit. He more than kept his word. We returned to celebrate our parents’ wedding anniversary, and thanks to his thoughtful planning and attention to detail, the occasion turned into a truly memorable family celebration. He accommodated our requests, making it possible for our close family members to join us and experience this breathtaking palace, whose hilltop location offers some of the finest views of Hyderabad. Every part of our stay reflected the highest standards, from the immaculate cleanliness of the rooms and public spaces to the peaceful, quiet atmosphere that makes the palace feel like a world of its own, complemented by exceptional amenities and impeccable service. What impressed me even more was his integrity and professionalism. He personally resolved a misunderstanding regarding the in-room minibar charges for soft drinks we had not consumed, ensuring the matter was handled fairly and without inconvenience. Moments like these are what make the experience feel genuinely worthwhile and reinforce the value of staying at a property of this caliber. One of the highlights of our visit was Mr. Abid’s surprise walkthrough of the magnificent Presidential Suite, The Nizam Darbar. Experiencing such an extraordinary space was a privilege and has certainly inspired us to return for a stay there in the future. A heartfelt thank you to Punam ma’am and Mr. Imran, whose warmth and gracious hospitality made us feel truly welcome throughout our stay. This visit reminded us that true luxury is not defined only by the grandeur of a palace, but by the people who make every guest feel genuinely valued. We left with beautiful memories and are already looking forward to returning once again."
