PB hotel design editorial

Fourteen centuries of Rajput history preceded Six Senses Fort Barwara by some margin — the fort complex at Chauth Ka Barwara, roughly 80 kilometres south of Jaipur, dates to the 10th century and spent most of its existence as a working stronghold before a decade-long restoration transformed it into one of India's most considered heritage hotel conversions. The project, completed in 2021, involved painstaking reconstruction of collapsed ramparts, domed chhatris, and intricately carved sandstone jali screens, all carried out using traditional Rajasthani craft techniques and local pink-gold stone that gives the compound its warm, amber-lit character — visible in the exterior images here, where gilded domes catch the last of the evening light against a deepening sky. The 48 suites and villas are distributed across the fort's various wings and courtyards, their interiors combining wide-plank timber floors in a herringbone lay, iron four-poster beds draped in gauze canopies, and carved teak armoires with the more tactile vocabulary of Rajasthani craft — ikat-embroidered cushions, antique-finish campaign trunks used as bedside tables, hand-knotted rugs in crimson and ochre. The dining spaces work with the fort's original arched arcade structure, double-height pointed arches framing views over the ancient walls while candlelit tables on polished limestone floors keep the atmosphere closer to a private haveli than a hotel restaurant. The long reflection pool anchored in the central courtyard, flanked by colonnade and mature trees, holds the compound together spatially.

About

A beautiful 14th century fort, sensitively converted to become a Six Senses sanctuary of well-being. Originally owned by the Rajasthani Royal Family, it faces the Chauth ka Barwara Mandir temple. The significant conservation effort incorporates a palace and two temples within the walled fort. The design reinterprets the gracious and regal ambience of a bygone era dating back 700 years.

"Our stay at *Six Senses Fort Barwara* was nothing short of exceptional. We visited to celebrate our *7th wedding anniversary* with our young son, and from the moment we arrived until the time we departed, every member of the team made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. The fort itself is breathtaking, beautifully restored, peaceful, and full of history. Our *Terrace Hot Tub Suite* was luxurious, spacious, and offered the perfect blend of heritage and modern comfort. What truly sets Six Senses apart is its people. Every interaction was warm, thoughtful, and personalized. A special thanks to *Amit (our GEM)* for ensuring everything was seamless throughout our stay. The anniversary arrangements, especially the *private destination dinner at Shikar Burj*, were magical and will remain one of our most cherished memories. Travelling with a young child can sometimes be challenging, but the team made it effortless. They thoughtfully looked after *Izhaan's* preferences at every meal and always made sure he was comfortable and happy. Those little gestures meant a lot to us. The food was outstanding, the spa experience was wonderfully relaxing, and every corner of the property reflected the Six Senses philosophy of sustainability, wellness, and genuine hospitality. It's rare to find a place where luxury feels so personal. We didn't feel like guests, we felt like family. Thank you to the entire Six Senses Fort Barwara team for making our anniversary celebration so memorable. We left with beautiful memories and are already looking forward to returning. *Highly recommended to anyone looking for a truly world-class luxury experience in Rajasthan.*"

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A stay that will always have a special place in our hearts Our stay at Six Senses Fort Barwara was to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary, and it turned out to be far more memorable than we could have imagined. From the moment we arrived, every member of the team made us feel genuinely welcome. A special thank you to Rajwardhan, our Guest Experience Manager, who welcomed us personally at the entrance and ensured every detail of our stay was taken care of with warmth and sincerity. One of the most meaningful experiences was at the beautiful 14th-century Radha Krishna Temple within the fort. A day before our anniversary, we requested the temple priest if a small pooja could be arranged for us the following morning. He graciously agreed, and celebrating our milestone in such a serene and sacred setting became one of the most cherished moments of our trip. The anniversary surprises were equally thoughtful—from the beautiful room decorations to the intimate celebration that made us feel truly special. Travelling with our six-year-old son can sometimes be challenging, but the team made it effortless. Whether it was preparing a simple bowl of khichdi for him, engaging him with meaningful activities at the Earth Lab, or making him feel included throughout our stay, every gesture reflected genuine care. The hospitality at Six Senses is exceptional—not because it’s extravagant, but because it’s deeply thoughtful. Every interaction felt personal, never scripted. The spa experience was among the finest we’ve had, and the attention to sustainability throughout the property added even more meaning to our stay. Every corner of the fort beautifully balances heritage, luxury and mindfulness. Finally, I must mention something that speaks volumes about the integrity of this team. I accidentally left behind my Dyson Airwrap after checking out. The hotel immediately coordinated with me, especially Vishal and Stafiny packed it with great care, and ensured it reached me safely and in perfect condition. That level of honesty, responsibility and attention long after a guest has left is rare and deserves special appreciation. Thank you to everyone at Six Senses Fort Barwara for giving us memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. We arrived to celebrate ten years of marriage, but we left with something even more valuable—a reminder that true luxury is found in kindness, thoughtfulness and the people who make a place feel like home. We cannot wait to return. 🤍"
