PB hotel design editorial

Across 100 acres of the Thar Desert outside Jaisalmer, where the scrub grass thins to open sand and the light at dusk turns everything the colour of raw honey, SUJÁN The Serai takes its design cue from the royal caravan encampments of Rajputana — the great moving courts of Rajput nobility that carried an entire palace culture across the desert on horseback. Opened in 2008 by founders Jaisal and Anjali Singh, the camp places 21 canvas tents on hand-carved local sandstone plinths, each one fronted by a pillared veranda with scalloped canopy edging and low sandstone daybeds upholstered in white cotton. The silhouette is unmistakably Mughal: the peaked tent form, the bunting trim, the ceremonial approach path of tiled sandstone stepping through dry grass toward the entrance. Inside, the atmosphere is that of a well-travelled collector's quarters rather than a decorated hotel room. Richly striped kilim runners cross the foot of each king bed, dark-stained teak wardrobes and open clothing rails carry the practical logic of camp furniture, and polished terracotta floors warm quickly underfoot. Brass oil lamps, carved wooden shelves holding ceramic bowls and figurines, a freestanding mirror propped at an angle — everything sits as though it arrived by camel and was unpacked with care. The inverted stepwell that forms the base of the infinity pool is the camp's most quietly brilliant structural move, drawing on a form of ancient water architecture to hold the desert horizon in perfect, unbroken reflection at sundown.

About

Set on a 100 acre private estate of indigenous desert scrub, The Serai draws inspiration from the royal caravan sites of Rajputana; blending the luxury and vivacity of this land of kings. There is no better place from which to venture into the mystical environs of Jaisalmer to discover its fabled golden fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 21 white canvas suites each have their own terrace lounge, sitting room with writing desk, air-con bedroom and a stylish his and hers double sink bathroom. Six of these suites have a private candlelit plunge pools, and the Royal Tented Suite has its own heated pool, spa, lounge and dining tent, and is set in an exclusive, walled-off compound. At the lounge you’ll find the well-stocked bar, along with endless board games and novels to enjoy. Evenings are spent under the vast expanse of the desert sky enjoying the ancient melodies of Manganiyar folk musicians. Camel safaris, desert drives and sundowners on the sand dunes are just some of the other memorable and sought after escapades on offer. Like all Relais & Chateaux properties The Serai reflects the place, its people and its culture. Serving sumptuous local delicacies as well as delicious western repasts drawn from inherited recipes that pattern the daily changing menus, give you some of the finest food in the land. Whilst the other SUJAN camps take care of the wildlife enthusiasts, the highly acclaimed SUJAN Spa at The Serai, is one of the main reasons people travel here. "Beautifully secluded property. 45min driving to Jaisalmer. There are 20 real tents, which are super luxurious. The only downside is the really noisy airco. Even on the lowest fan speed, we needed earplugs. Bed is extra large and comfortable. Bathroom is large, with a very good open shower. Staff is extremely attentive and they made every effort to make it an exceptional stay. Thank you to the whole team! We had breakfast, lunch and dinner and they were all very nice. The pool was nice and fresh. We loved the quietness and remoteness of the property!"

"Truly an oasis amongst the wilderness. Never thought such a wonderful place existed in India. There are only 20 odd tents I believe and the whole place is outstanding from the moment you arrive. The service is impeccable , the tents truly 5 star along with the wonderful food and communal areas. All the staff were fantastic throughout and attend to our every whim and request without any hesitation. The spa was excellent and the therapists highly trained . Food was excellent and no request was a problem . Given how remote and boutique this place is it is amazing that they can achieve such a high standard . Would like to thank all the staff in particular Monishca and Vikas Thakur. The pool area along with the private pool in the tent are a sight to be seen and exquisite. On various evenings they have local singers and dancers and the shows are spectacular. We done the ‘sunset downer ‘ excursion which was amazing and highly recommended. Will definitely be back."

"We had heard a lot of positive things about this resort, so we decided to visit this place for lunch during our stay in Jaisalmer. It's about 45 minutes drive from town in a very remote and quiet area. There is nothing nearby. Once you enter you only hear the sounds of birds chirping and wind blowing. Since we had already booked the table for lunch, they took us in the dining room which was huge but all tables were placed at good distance. When we told them that we are interested to have a look at the property, they immediately assigned a person to show us around. The resort is spread over 100 acres. They have 21 luxury tents with private bathrooms. Some of the tents had plunge pools. The royal tent had heated pool, spa and big private ground for outdoor seating. They had a big pool and a boutique shop also for guests. The bar cum library was awesome with top quality wooden furniture. For lunch they had a la carte menu and thali. We decided to have veg Rajasthani thali. The food was very fresh and delicious. We were told that they grow all vegetables in their own nearby farm. The décor in entire resort was classy. The use all foldable furniture as the resort is closed during extreme summer and reopen in October. As far as service was concerned, we did not expect to get such a royal treatment only for lunch. They looked after us very well during our two hours stay. Thanks Siddharth Jyoti, butler Parameshawar, Tambal F&B Koshal Kumar, Rajendar and chef Rawlsingh and Mehandar. It was a memorable outing for us..."
