PB hotel design editorial

Positioned above Worli's low-rise skyline with unobstructed sightlines across the Mahalaxmi racecourse to the Arabian Sea, the tower that houses Four Seasons Mumbai was always conceived as a vertical argument for a different kind of luxury in a city that had long associated grandeur with colonial-era heritage hotels. Completed in 2008 and rising 34 floors, the building was designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates with a facade of pale stone cladding and floor-to-ceiling glazing — visible here in the entrance canopy's grid of steel and frosted glass, which channels light downward in a gesture more corporate-cool than overtly tropical. The original guest rooms established a palette of warm santos mahogany millwork, ivory walls, and tawny carpets, the curved credenzas and upholstered benches placing them squarely in the refined international register HBA deployed across the brand globally in that period. A more recent renovation has sharpened the upper-floor suites considerably — deep navy-channelled headboards, greige oak panelling, and cylindrical concrete columns left exposed as sculptural anchors, a palette with considerably more edge than the original scheme. The rooftop pool terrace, framed by teak pergolas draped in frangipani, overlooks the racecourse's green expanse toward the water. The Japanese restaurant San:Qi remains among the hotel's most architecturally considered spaces, its glass-enclosed wine cellar acting as a luminous centrepiece, surrounded by teak banquettes, hand-thrown ceramic tableware, and a coffered amber-lit ceiling that pulls warmth into an otherwise restrained room.

"Ordinary! From my arrival at the hotel to departure, it was an average experience. I was here for a business event. The food was the biggest disapponintment and that srntiment was shared by most guests attending the event. I tried all three meals B, L and D and its was just ordinary food, motsly tasteless, oily or bland with extremely limited choices. Lobby is small, crowd management is poor. The hotel building has signs of wear and tear. Washrooms were unclean and touch taps not functioning. Overall dissapointing experience."

"We had a great 3 night stay here. Especially when so much work is being done. I presume the entrance to the hotel will be improved. The location at the moment is dirty and run down. A visit to the pool would have been nice on a hot day, but I presume the absence is due to the renovation. I also presume the rather cramped reception was also due to renovations. The staff were very attentive, if a little too much at times. The 35th bar was excellent and we enjoyed it there each night."

"We stayed at the Four Seasons for three nights at the end of February and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is currently undergoing extensive renovations, but manages to ensure that guests hardly notice. We had a very nice room that offered us all the amenities of a 5* hotel (which is a given, of course, given the standard). What was really outstanding was the staff. Whatever request we had was immediately fulfilled with a smile. We had the impression that the staff really enjoy their job, and that's exactly what you feel as a guest. Genuine hospitality and attentiveness. The concierge team is outstanding and organized a wonderful day of sightseeing for us—the best of Mumbai in just five hours, without any rush or stress. They even made last-minute reservations at restaurants that were already fully booked—just great. The rooftop bar is definitely worth a visit. Be sure to try the house gin. Breakfast is excellent and offers Indian, American, and European delicacies as well as plenty of healthy options, which we really appreciate. We had nothing to complain about, except for the quality of the espresso, which could be prepared a little more authentically, and we will remember this stay very fondly. Thank you very much for 4 wonderful days."
