PB hotel design editorial

Juhu Beach has long been Mumbai's most cinematic address — the stretch of Arabian Sea coastline where Bollywood money built its bungalows and where the city's film industry has always come to exhale. Soho House Mumbai arrived here in 2018, fitted into a purpose-built nine-storey white stucco tower whose facade borrows the ornamental plasterwork and arched colonnades of Mumbai's colonial-era domestic architecture, palm trees flanking an entrance canopy in British racing green. The building carries the feeling of a Bombay art deco villa stretched vertically, medallion reliefs and iron balustrades giving the street elevation a distinctly local pedigree rather than the placeless minimalism that marks so many new-build hospitality projects. Inside, the Soho House design team applied the layered, inherited-room aesthetic the group has developed across its global portfolio, but calibrated it for the subcontinent. Guestrooms are dressed in slate-blue grasscloth walls beneath whitewashed batten ceilings, the furniture mixing Anglo-Indian teak campaign pieces and bone-inlaid side tables with block-printed Indian textiles and raffia-shaded reading lamps — the effect closer to a well-curated Malabar Hill apartment than a hotel room. The ground-floor bar draws Baccarat-style crystal chandeliers against sage-painted panelling, an orange velvet sectional anchoring a mix of ikat-cushioned wing chairs and carved wood occasional tables, contemporary Indian art hung salon-style above the dado. Up top, a rooftop terrace finished in patterned encaustic tile and strung with wicker globe pendants opens across the Mumbai skyline toward the sea.

"Very disappointed with the awful service. Been here a couple of hours and finding it all a bit stressful to be honest reception staff are particularly non responsive. I questions that my rate is relax and rose what does that mean (I think I was supposed to get a bottle of rose wine in my room), I can’t see anything. I was told by reception that she would call me back about 30 mins ago and still nothing. Most frustrating experience in the last 2 weeks that I have been in India. I shall not be staying here again."

"Soho House Mumbai leaves the other SH properties MILES behind. The staff are super friendly, ZERO attitude. The rooms are large and really comfortable. Beautifully decorated throughout with gorgeous fabrics from Jaipur. Amazing food - literally heads above the rest of the other Soho Houses. Santosh on the 10th floor looked after us beautifully, one of the best experiences of service we had in the whole of India. Ravi at reception was a star. I wish all Soho Houses were like the Mumbai property."

"Extremely disappointing and stressful experience at Soho House. I handed over my car to the valet as per their service, trusting that it would be parked responsibly. Instead, the valet parked my car on the main road near Juhu Tara, which is a no-parking zone. As a result, the traffic police clamped the car and issued a fine. This was entirely due to their negligence and not my fault at all. What made the situation worse was the complete lack of urgency and accountability from the hotel staff. I informed the ground staff immediately, but they were painfully slow and casual in their response. For almost an hour, there was no clear action taken. When I finally decided to leave and asked for my car, only then did they “realise” that the car had already been towed and taken to the nearest police station. Despite me flagging the issue much earlier, neither the valet nor the hotel staff had any clue about where the car was or what had happened to it. It was mentally exhausting and extremely inconvenient. For a brand that positions itself as premium, this level of irresponsibility, poor communication, and lack of ownership is unacceptable. Valet parking is meant to provide convenience and security, not harassment and unnecessary trouble. This experience completely ruined the visit and left me deeply disappointed with their service standards."

"I came during monsoon expecting empty beaches… instead, everyone was out partying in the rain until authorities literally asked people to leave at sunset. My room was spacious with a long balcony facing the beach, though you need a quick walk to reach it. The area is lively and a bit chaotic, but the beach behind the hotel balances it. Cinema room is cool; movie selection wasn’t. And no Indian restaurant? In Mumbai? Missed chance. Breakfast was room-service for me."

"We ordered pizza and one tea. We were over charged on the bill with a 36% taxes charge. The staff spun us a lie on the taxes despite us challenging the bill. The GST and taxes should not have exceeded 18% according to the GST rules. While the pizza was good, we do not like being ripped off with an over charge."
