PB hotel design editorial

Commanding the southernmost tip of Marine Drive, where the Arabian Sea curves away toward the open horizon and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link traces its distant arc, the tower that houses The Oberoi Mumbai has held one of the great urban waterfront positions in Asia since it opened in 1987. The 35-floor structure, designed with a clean modernist silhouette in cream-toned precast concrete, was conceived to place the maximum number of rooms in direct conversation with the sea — a spatial ambition that shapes the entire guest experience from arrival onward. The hotel's 287 rooms were comprehensively reimagined in a 2012 renovation led by the Singapore-based firm HBA, which stripped out the earlier interiors and replaced them with a palette of warm travertine, dark-stained hardwood floors, and cream leather headboards that keep the architecture of the view firmly at the center of each room. The bathrooms carry their own logic — freestanding soaking tubs positioned so the eye travels past the glass enclosure and through the bedroom window to the water beyond, travertine-clad wet rooms illuminated by teak-slatted ceilings that bring an unexpected softness to the stone. In the signature restaurant, gold-leaf coffered ceilings and jali-screen room dividers in brass reference Mughal decorative traditions without collapsing into pastiche. Outside, a ground-level infinity pool terminated by a cascade wall extends toward the seafront promenade, palm-lined and laid in pale granite — a composition that earns its view rather than simply inheriting it.

"This is simply the best hotels in Mumbai. Located close to the major tourist attractions is South Mumbai. An immaculate hotel, well appointed rooms, exquisite food (Indian/Chinese/European), caring staff. Highly recommended!"

"City hotels are not easy to get right - often a lack of any sort of view, no gardens and so on, but overall, The Oberoi was just a dream for us. Arriving quite early from London, our room was ready. This trip was the start of a series of holidays for a “big” birthday milestone for my wife. The hotel knew this and kind decked the room out in balloons, a Happy Birthday sign on the window and a (delicious) cake. A fabulous start. We ate in the Indian restaurant - pricey as everyone says but wonderful food. A message from the manager Mr Amit Kaul was sent to me to check that everything was ok. I replied saying that in short order, his staff had been nothing but charming, helpful and delightful - all of them. I added - as a joke - that the room was a little small and that next time I should spend a bit more money on a larger room. Well, the next morning, a lovely lady, Neha, came to us at breakfast and suggested we move rooms at no cost to a “more comfortable” room. A suite no less. What an incredible thing to happen. The difference was day and night. A separate sitting room - useful as I had a small amount of work to do early in the morning whilst Mrs snoozed - and a much larger bathroom with twin basins. A view over the bay is a plus although the view is a bit hazy! We spent time at the pool - preferring the Trident pool. Breakfasts were superb - a great way to start the day. The transfers to and from the airport were arranged by the hotel - Merc E class, so very comfy. All in all, I have nothing but praise for this incredible hotel. The Oberoi philosophy on hospitality is World renown and to experience it is simply a pleasure."

"From the moment you step out of the car you are treated like royalty. The staff are impeccably dressed, and can’t do enough to help you. We stayed in a luxury room, which is the lowest level, and it was spacious and had a great bed and shower. The breakfasts are fantastic, the gym is really well equipped, though it’s missing a cable machine. We eat in Ziya, which was very special, but overpriced. My only quibbles are that there is little storage in the room and it’s a bit cramped in the bathroom for two people, and it is really noisy and windy by the pool. Stay here to ease you into the chaos of Mumbai, you won’t regret it, this is proper 5 star luxury."

"This is a nice hotel. It is a little dated, with the atrium lobby rising 10+ stories. However, the rooms are nice and the restaurants are good. There are no USB charging ports in the room."
