PB hotel design editorial

Commissioned by Jamsetji Nata Tata and completed in 1903, the building that became the Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai carries one of hospitality's most persistent founding myths — that its creator, denied entry to a Europeans-only hotel, resolved to build something finer for everyone. Whether apocryphal or not, the ambition embedded in that story shaped everything: architect W.A. Chambers produced a structure of extraordinary architectural promiscuity, fusing Moorish domes, Florentine Gothic arches, and Rajput detailing into a six-storey seafront landmark in Colaba that still commands the Apollo Bunder waterfront with absolute authority. The exterior image here captures the inner courtyard elevation rising behind the pool terrace — the terracotta-red central dome cresting above layered loggias of pale Kurla stone, bougainvillea spilling from arched galleries, the whole composition framed by the more austere Tower wing added in 1973. Inside, the 560 rooms divide between the historic Palace wing and the Tower, each with its own register. Palace rooms visible in the images deploy arched connecting doorways, Calacatta marble surfaces, herringbone oak floors, and silk-upholstered button-tufted benches — the atmosphere closer to a carefully restored private residence than a hotel corridor. Tower rooms by contrast carry coffered ceilings with latticed plasterwork and warmer teak-toned floors. The all-day dining space Shamiana presents banquette seating beneath hanging faceted-glass lanterns and a gallery wall of black-and-white celebrity photographs, while Wasabi by Morimoto — its long sushi counter lined with woven-wood bar stools against deep burgundy lacquered panelling — brings a vivid contemporary counterpoint to the Palace's Edwardian grandeur.

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai Reviews

"The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai is an architectural treasure, but its legacy feels diminished by a troubling indifference at the managerial level. Too often, decisions driven by the bottom line overshadow the essence of true hospitality. Guests are treated less as individuals deserving thoughtful care and more as commodities—processed rather than welcomed. What deepens the frustration is the repetition of hollow, formulaic apologies. These vacuous “I’m sorry” responses only add to the sense of disregard, especially when the same issues have been raised in reviews for years with little evidence of meaningful change. A hotel of this stature should not rely on words alone while neglecting action. Understandable that non management staff try hard but are demoralised. It must be awful reporting to this motley crew of management geniuses. By all means, visit and take in the grandeur—but if you’re seeking a reliably attentive, five-star level of service, you may be better off choosing The Oberoi, Mumbai instead"

"A short revisit to the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai is always our way of resetting our inner calm. This time too, it worked perfectly. Excellent hospitality by all the team led by Ritesh Sharma ji. Good food at Aquarius and The Souk. Pleasant time spent among great Indian masters at the crystall ball room, palace lounge and in the palace corridors. Lots of books to read. Fabulous sea views and sunrise from our suite. We are certainly doing this again and again."

"The team at Taj Mahal Palace is so so warm and lovely! I brought my mom here for the first time and her happiness made it all worthwhile. I think I’m going to remember this experience for a long, long time. Thank you, Taj :)"

"My experience while staying at the Taj Mahal palace was really great because the rooms & amenities are great and the staff is polite, kind and helpful. I also had an opportunity to go for the “historic walk” which is in a nutshell an experiential walk with the guide who tells you all about the hotel and its history, it was great, Mr. Prabhakar was our guide and an excellent one at that. I would definitely recommend to stay at Taj Mahal palace."

"We chose to travel across India for our anniversary staying exclusively at Taj properties — and that decision alone tells you everything about how much we trust and love this brand. From the regal warmth of Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur, to the grandeur of Taj Palace in Delhi, every property delivered something truly exceptional. But it was the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai that brought our journey to a close, and what a close it was. As Taj's iconic flagship heritage hotel and a symbol of 120 years of extraordinary hospitality under the Tata Group, the Taj Mahal Palace carries a legacy that you feel the moment you arrive. It was the perfect way to end our trip — not just as a hotel stay, but as a fitting culmination of everything the Taj brand stands for. As a wonderful anniversary surprise, the Taj team gifted us an upgrade to the Heritage Wing. Walking into our room to find it beautifully dressed with cake and balloons was a genuinely moving moment — it felt less like a hotel welcome and more like arriving somewhere that already knew us. From the very first moment to the last, every interaction made it clear we weren't simply guests — we were being looked after. The staff deserve particular recognition. Warm, attentive, and effortlessly thoughtful, they have a rare gift for making you feel seen without ever being intrusive. To the entire team at the Taj Mahal Palace, and to every member of staff across all the Taj properties we visited — you are all stars. Here's to 120 years of being truly exceptional, and to many more. We will absolutely be back."
