PB hotel design editorial

Commissioned by Jamsetji Nata Tata and completed in 1903, the building that became the Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai carries one of hospitality's most persistent founding myths — that its creator, denied entry to a Europeans-only hotel, resolved to build something finer for everyone. Whether apocryphal or not, the ambition embedded in that story shaped everything: architect W.A. Chambers produced a structure of extraordinary architectural promiscuity, fusing Moorish domes, Florentine Gothic arches, and Rajput detailing into a six-storey seafront landmark in Colaba that still commands the Apollo Bunder waterfront with absolute authority. The exterior image here captures the inner courtyard elevation rising behind the pool terrace — the terracotta-red central dome cresting above layered loggias of pale Kurla stone, bougainvillea spilling from arched galleries, the whole composition framed by the more austere Tower wing added in 1973. Inside, the 560 rooms divide between the historic Palace wing and the Tower, each with its own register. Palace rooms visible in the images deploy arched connecting doorways, Calacatta marble surfaces, herringbone oak floors, and silk-upholstered button-tufted benches — the atmosphere closer to a carefully restored private residence than a hotel corridor. Tower rooms by contrast carry coffered ceilings with latticed plasterwork and warmer teak-toned floors. The all-day dining space Shamiana presents banquette seating beneath hanging faceted-glass lanterns and a gallery wall of black-and-white celebrity photographs, while Wasabi by Morimoto — its long sushi counter lined with woven-wood bar stools against deep burgundy lacquered panelling — brings a vivid contemporary counterpoint to the Palace's Edwardian grandeur.

"I’ve been fortunate enough to stay in some wonderful hotels over the years, but The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai is without question the best hotel I’ve ever experienced. From the moment you arrive, the hotel simply screams luxury. Walking through the entrance into the magnificent lobby is an experience in itself, and you immediately feel like you’re somewhere truly special. The service was absolutely exceptional. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, welcoming, attentive and genuinely passionate about making our stay unforgettable. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was outstanding throughout our stay, and breakfast was a real highlight. There was an incredible selection to choose from, including perfectly prepared Eggs Benedict and Eggs Royale, all enjoyed while overlooking the iconic Gateway of India. It’s hard to imagine a better way to start the day. Our room was everything you could hope for—spacious, elegant, beautifully designed and immaculately maintained. The bed was incredibly comfortable, making for one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a hotel. The swimming pool area was equally spectacular. It felt like a peaceful oasis in the middle of Mumbai, and the beautiful canopy above the pool added to the unique atmosphere. Every detail at The Taj Mahal Palace reflects quality, elegance and world-class hospitality. It isn’t just a hotel—it’s an experience that I’ll never forget. If you’re visiting Mumbai and want to treat yourself to somewhere truly special, look no further. This is, without doubt, the finest hotel I’ve ever stayed in, and I cannot wait for the opportunity to return."

"Perfect magical experience. My wife and I were planning on celebrating our anniversary (low-key) in Mumbai and the team and staff at Taj right from the moment we were received at the airport, all the way through until the time we left just pulled all the stops and surprised us! It was absolute magic. This is how unforgettable memories are created! Thank you to the entire staff, floor butlers, chefs and servers (special mention to Kiran, Tushar, Jayesh!). Can't wait to come back again."
