PB hotel design editorial

Commissioned by Jamsetji Nata Tata and completed in 1903, the building that became the Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai carries one of hospitality's most persistent founding myths — that its creator, denied entry to a Europeans-only hotel, resolved to build something finer for everyone. Whether apocryphal or not, the ambition embedded in that story shaped everything: architect W.A. Chambers produced a structure of extraordinary architectural promiscuity, fusing Moorish domes, Florentine Gothic arches, and Rajput detailing into a six-storey seafront landmark in Colaba that still commands the Apollo Bunder waterfront with absolute authority. The exterior image here captures the inner courtyard elevation rising behind the pool terrace — the terracotta-red central dome cresting above layered loggias of pale Kurla stone, bougainvillea spilling from arched galleries, the whole composition framed by the more austere Tower wing added in 1973. Inside, the 560 rooms divide between the historic Palace wing and the Tower, each with its own register. Palace rooms visible in the images deploy arched connecting doorways, Calacatta marble surfaces, herringbone oak floors, and silk-upholstered button-tufted benches — the atmosphere closer to a carefully restored private residence than a hotel corridor. Tower rooms by contrast carry coffered ceilings with latticed plasterwork and warmer teak-toned floors. The all-day dining space Shamiana presents banquette seating beneath hanging faceted-glass lanterns and a gallery wall of black-and-white celebrity photographs, while Wasabi by Morimoto — its long sushi counter lined with woven-wood bar stools against deep burgundy lacquered panelling — brings a vivid contemporary counterpoint to the Palace's Edwardian grandeur.

"Best hotel we have ever stayed in . Outstanding staff treats you warmly and ready to accommodate your every need my husband had a severe medical emergency, and the entire staff including manager responded, safely transferred him to nearest hospital by ambulance, followed up to see how who he was doing. Called back and offered a car to take him back to the hotel after discharge. On our return from the hospital offered to send breakfast to the room. This act of kindness and care from the manager and the staff was greatly appreciated and will stay in our hearts for ever. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏"

"A grande old Dame for sure. We had a Club room (460) which had a marvelous view of the Gateway to India. As part of our ‘package’ we had a one way airport transfer in an SUV (just about got our luggage in!). Almost an hour from the airport at 6.30pm. Nice traditional welcome and check-in formalities carried out in the room. Good sized room and the bed was nice and comfy. Good bathroom apart from a really silly single basin which wouldn’t drain well and which you could hardly get your hands under the tap! Great shower. We were celebrating ‘an occasion’ and the next day balloons and a cake were left - really nice touch. With just two nights and one full day we opted for a day by the pool. Firstly enjoying breakfast in the Sea Lounge in a window seat with a view. Omelette made to order and a very impressive array of all sorts of food to suit anyone. We liked the large pool. A lot of reviewers talk of ‘getting there early’ for a sun lounger. But on a Thursday morning, there were still plenty of availability at 11am. Around lunchtime we had a few beers and they were delivered with lightening speed! Being enclosed there isn’t much of a breeze and by 2.30pm it was too hot to carry on. We went to afternoon tea in the Taj Club - much enjoyed it. Good nibbles/sandwiches which doubled as a late lunch. In the evening the Taj Club offers free drinks and cocktails from 6-8pm. A selection of items to eat too. We took full advantage of regular top ups and headed back to the room in a very merry state! The hotel arranged an early taxi to the airport at 7am the next morning. No traffic at all! 30 minutes. All in all, very enjoyable. The hotel does have minor signs of ages - a bit of decorating here and there is needed (and our room had a dehumidifier in it - not an issue for us). But this is of course an old historic building which is more than 120 years old! I thought the bill including extras of just under £1000 (US$1300) was reasonable. Staff of course, are superbly trained and all charming."
