PB hotel design editorial

Pitched among the dhok trees on the edge of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, where the scrub forest thickens before the park boundary proper, the twelve hand-stitched canvas tents of SUJÁN Sher Bagh have been evoking the atmosphere of a 1920s Indian shikaar encampment since Jaisal Singh founded the camp in October 2000. It was a genuinely pioneering proposition at the time — luxury tented accommodation was almost unknown in India — and the interiors make the historical reference concrete rather than decorative: Edwardian campaign-style furniture in teak and rosewood, brass kerosene lanterns hung from timber veranda posts, canopied four-poster beds draped in white mosquito net, folding director's chairs, and leather-strapped travel trunks tucked beneath wooden benches at the foot of each bed. Tiger portraits in gilded frames line the interior canvas walls, giving the sleeping spaces the feeling of a naturalist's field quarters furnished from a Jaipur auction house. The communal areas work in the same spirit. At dusk, the hardwood deck terrace fills with canvas safari chairs arranged around small fire bowls, the whole scene lit by dozens of ground-level lanterns whose warm glow extends into the surrounding grassland. Locally quarried sandstone — the same pale honey-coloured stone that defines Rajasthan's fort architecture — forms the dining pavilion walls, keeping the camp connected to its regional landscape even as the tented rooflines float above it. In 2008, Sher Bagh became the first tented property in India admitted to Relais & Châteaux, a distinction the camp has worn without apparent effort.

About

Ranthambhore is the world’s finest place to observe tigers in the wild, and SUJÁN Sher Bagh is the ideal base from which to explore this billion-year-old forest, with the mighty citadel that lends its name to the reserve rising majestically at the heart of it. With ruins of palaces, cenotaphs and follies dotted around the jungle, now inhabited by its wild denizens, with the tiger at the apex, it is a spectacular wildlife haven. Sher Bagh, evokes nostalgic sensibilities of life on safari during the heydays of an era celebrated for its art de vivre, living elegantly under canvas, whilst on safari. With crackling campfires under starlit skies, sumptuous Anglo-Indian repasts using homegrown organic produce, coupled with old-world service, the camp epitomises life on safari as it ought to be lived. Crackling campfires under star lit skies, naturalists to share the facts of the forest, it’s a place where comfort, style and an unmatchable commitment to conservation meet. With over 40 years experience, Sher Bagh’s guides and trackers are the best in the business. Their incredible knowledge of the park and the behaviour of its star inhabitant, the tiger, together with their passionate enthusiasm, make a stay here unparalleled.

"We had a wonderful stay at Sujan, a real treat to stay somewhere so beautiful. It is an idyllic location, combined with some amazing game drives. We were met by Geeta and made to feel so welcome and looked after by Ajay at dinner. The game drives were amazing, we were lucky to see 7 tigers, a tigress and 4 cubs and two young males in zone 4, we didn’t see tigers in zones 2 and 6 but the landscapes are contrasting and it’s beautiful being guided through learning about the ecology and wildlife. We were delighted with the tent … it’s so much more and the lunch and breakfast are excellent. It would have been nice to be able to order something from an evening menu, whilst the thali was delicious we had it both nights with no choice available. We would love to return, and getting our laundry included was great, mid holiday! There is no guarantee that you will see the tigers in the beautiful national park, but visiting a wild and beautiful ecosystem was wonderful on its own"

"This is a first-class safari camp. My wife, sister and I spent three nights here with the goal of seeing tigers, which we absolutely did! However, the tiger sightings were just one part of the experience at Sher Bagh. The food and service were first class. A special shout out to Raj who took great care of use during our entire stay, catering to all of our needs. The platform tents are five star and bring you comfort and luxury after spending your days on the national park's dusty roads in search of wildlife. If you plan to visit Ranthambore National Park, Sher Bagh is the place to stay. You won't regret it!"

"An oasis in Ranthambhore - the hotel is so relaxing and intimate with only a dozen tented pavilions on site and plenty of space in the ‘public’ areas ie the bar, restaurant and pool area. The tented pavilions offer every luxury and amenity including a free laundry service. There are no TVs which is a good thing. The main reason for going is the tiger reserve which is about 10 minutes drive from the camp. The hotel provides excellent guides and drivers and their own jeeps and from what I could see they were private drivers - one couple or group per jeep. Huge thanks to Ash and our driver (really sorry but can’t remember name - two parts with second maybe jui) we were one of few groups on the occasion to spot a tiger😁 Couple of minor negatives - the road to the camp is a bit rough. We had one dinner which could have been better (oversalted ravioli and burnt baked Alaska) but the camp dinner on the second night was amazing. Finally the staff and management were so friendly and helpful but a couple of staff members offered to do things for us but then forgot ie run a bath. All together an excellent stay and we saw a tiger in the wild🤗👏"

"This is a truly outstanding boutique property with a real heart and soul. I travelled with my 17 year old daughter and we visited on Diwali. Our initial welcome from Megha and the width of her smile set the scene for a delightful stay here. The style, ambience, peace and nature here are very special indeed. There is a hint of African Safari Lodge here but with a genuine and authentic Indian presentation. The staff our excellent the the evenings are just glorious by candlelight. Leaving here was a strain and we longed for this camp for days after departing."
