PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a rocky spur of the Aravalli Hills above the village of Delwara, the eighteenth-century Devgarh Fort was a minor Rajput stronghold long before it became one of India's most quietly radical hotel conversions. RAAS Devigarh, which opened in 1999 after a decade-long restoration led by the Delhi-based practice Alchemy, made a deliberate and then-controversial choice: rather than restore the palace to a facsimile of its Mewar-period interiors, the design team stripped every room back to white marble and let the architecture carry the history. The exteriors remain faithful to their origins — tiered chhatris, carved stone brackets, arched jharokha windows framing Aravalli ridge lines — while the 39 suites inside pursue a cool, almost ascetic minimalism that placed the property well ahead of its time. The interiors visible in the images confirm that restraint. Beds sit on low polished marble plinths; walls are finished in flat white lime plaster punctuated by geometric tile panels in indigo and grey; teak shutters fold back from arched stone window surrounds to frame mountain views in place of any decorative gesture. The bar, by contrast, commits fully to the original architecture — a double-height hall of carved sandstone arcades lit by industrial brass globe pendants and dressed with leather club sofas and ikat-covered chairs. The restaurant extends onto an open terrace where chartreuse upholstered dining chairs against Makrana marble floors keep the contemporary register consistent, the Aravallis dissolving into haze beyond.

About

Much more than just a place to stay, RAAS Devigarh sets a template for next-generation India. Nestled in the Aravalli Hills under an hour away from Udaipur, the 18th-century palace is an outstanding heritage property which looks to the future. Responsibly updated, eco-minded, and environmentally conscious, it smoothly meets the needs of the modern traveller, whilst remaining a stunning testament to the beauty, charm, and magic of old-world Rajputana. Holding a commanding position with views out across the valley and the village of Delwara, Devigarh showcases an array of decorative styles and tranquil landscaped gardens. Minimalist interiors are polished and comfortable and beautifully juxtapose the ancient, ornate backdrop. Enter a world of Marwari horse murals, mirrored ante-chambers, courtyards, arches, turrets, swings, marble bowls of flowers and, come night, a thousand candles and stars.

"Wow, Wow, Wow. Words cannot describe how amazing is this property. Preserving it's 400 year old history and turning it into understated luxury is what stands out here. Along with the exceptional service. Staff looks happy to be working here and everyone is so lovely. We didn't really want to leave the hotel as every corner has its own vibe filled with history - and the views of Aravalli Hills."

"We (a family of 2 adults and 1 teen)had the most beautiful long weekend at the Devigarh Fort , a magnificently restored 250 year old heritage castle which feels like a serene oasis dreaming of old world nostalgia ….. aeons away from the hustle, bustle and stress of city life! The hospitality is impeccable, with special mention to Mr Subhash in the dining area who remembered all our breakfast choices perfectly and Mr Puran our very experienced and knowledgeable chauffeur who took us to Nathdwara and various parts of Udaipur Old City. The fort resort is situated around 20 km away from Udaipur City and 20 km away from the sacred Nathdwara Temple town, home of Shrinathji, the beloved form of Shri Krishna. The suites are lovely and well appointed…. However we personally felt that as a family the garden suites with their higher ceilings and sprawling outdoor daybed , were more suited to our needs than the palace suites which , though absolutely gorgeous and perfect for couples, would be a bit too claustrophobic for a family. There is plenty of entertainment in terms of board games in scenic settings like the Darbaar Bar , table tennis in the common area, a gorgeous pool and jacuzzi which are stunning especially in the evening twilight! After a 3 day long breather eating the most delicious organic produce straight from the palace gardens, homemade pickles and chutney, inhaling bottles of ice cold beer , white wine and what felt like an universal supply of chocolate milk shakes for our 14 year old, we feel that our souls have rejuvenated!"

"My second stay at this incredible hotel, 7 years after the first visti. It was even better than I remembered, and this time I happily call out the entire team at RAAS Devigarh for theri fantastic professionalism and hospitality. Our group of 11 had a 3 night stay here, and we highlighted this with a specially hosted 5 course meal to celebrate the end of our 4 weeke in India. That meal was wonderful, but of course everything about this hotel is wonderful. It's location is quite unique in my mind, and we enjoyed walking around the Delwara village that sits below the hotel. Wish we could have stayed longer, nothing was a problem and I cannot recommend this hotel enough as a must stop location for a couple of inspirational and tranquil days if you are touring India for two weeks or more. Maybe we will have a week here next time! Thankyou RAAS Devigarh."

"Restoration of the building and incorporating of original frescoes and features untouched, whilst coolly updating and furnishing the guest spaces is to marvel at. Food fresh from the gardens and the pool are wonderful. So lovely to enjoy a purified water washed fresh salad after a fortnight in Rajhastan! Service was a little stilted and sparse - being pelted by dried rose buds from on high on arrival not entirely welcome and we struggled to find the yoga shambhala one morning. But a fabulous spot for a short refresh from the splendours and noise of Udaipur."

"What an amazing hotel this is. I could not recommend it more. Probably one of the nicest places we've ever stayed. Everything about it is lovely from the gorgeous views, amazing swimming pool, beautiful cocktail bar, great food - and above all the extraordinary service. We liked it so much we changed our plans and came back!"
