PB hotel design editorial

Built on a four-acre natural island at the centre of Lake Pichola, the white marble palace that became the Taj Lake Palace was commissioned by Maharana Jagat Singh II of Mewar in 1746 as a pleasure retreat — a place of leisure and ceremony entirely surrounded by water, with the Aravalli Hills as its permanent backdrop. What makes the property so singular is not merely its setting but the fact that the architecture was always conceived as a kind of floating apparition, its colonnaded facades and chattri-topped pavilions designed to dissolve into their own reflection. Managed by the Taj Hotels group since 1971, the palace was converted into a hotel with 83 rooms and suites without disturbing the essential geometry of its Rajput and Mughal-inflected form. Inside, the rooms move between registers: some suites carry deep-carved teak friezes running along corniced ceilings, black-and-white marble floors laid in bold chevron patterns, and four-poster beds beneath crystal chandeliers, while lake-facing rooms offer hand-painted wall murals of birds and flowering branches, polished Makrana marble underfoot, and arched window alcoves wide enough to sit in and watch the water. The rooftop pool, framed by a scallop-arched colonnade and a domed Rajput pavilion topped with white marble figures, frames the City Palace and surrounding ghats in a composition that manages to feel intimate rather than monumental. In the bar, jali marble screens and cane-and-teak furniture hold the Mewar craft tradition lightly, without theatre.

"Our recent family stay at the Taj Lake Palace was nothing short of magical. From the moment we stepped onto the boat to the time we returned, the entire experience felt surreal and truly royal. We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to Luxury Palace & Lake View rooms, which made our stay even more special. The views from the room were absolutely mesmerizing—changing beautifully through the day, from serene mornings to glowing sunsets and stunning twilight reflections over Lake Pichola. Watching the illuminated City Palace Udaipur from our room was unforgettable. The hospitality was exceptional. From the grand welcome with flower petals to being escorted under a royal umbrella by guards, every detail made us feel like royalty. A special thanks to Mr. Prem Singh Rathore, who went above and beyond to arrange a beautiful surprise cake-cutting celebration in the garden area—completely complimentary and incredibly thoughtful. Our kids had a fantastic time, especially enjoying the pool. The property itself is stunning—every corner, from the gardens to the swimming pool, jacuzzi, and rooftop bar at Bhairo, is picture-perfect. We captured some amazing family moments throughout the palace. The rooms were luxurious, cozy, and well-appointed. Breakfast was delightful, with a wide spread and very warm, polite service from the restaurant team. One small suggestion for improvement: while the overall dining experience was good, the authentic Rajasthani dishes like Laal Maas and Besan Gatta didn’t quite meet expectations. As someone familiar with authentic local flavors, I felt these dishes could be improved in terms of authenticity and taste. Perhaps offering a more traditional version for guests who appreciate genuine Rajasthani cuisine would enhance the experience further. Overall, this stay was truly unforgettable. The Taj Lake Palace is not just a hotel—it’s an experience that we will cherish for a lifetime. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a royal, once-in-a-lifetime stay in Udaipur."

"The Taj Lake Palace is one of my favourite hotels. Everything about this place was 10/10 - the hotel, the ambience, the staff, the food. This is a real palace converted to a hotel, not a hotel built like a palace and the intricacy of the palace shows that. A few mentions I would like to make: Kavita (concierge) - from the moment, we got there, Kavita was fantastic and helped us plan our trip and even helped arrange a celebratory cake for our special occassion Soumil (pool manager) - fab guy, so helpful with everything and made our stay at the pool so comfortable Manjeet (guide) - super funny and knowledgeable Jharokha staff - from the day and afternoon managers to Oveish, our wait staff - very good Neel staff - Vijay was by far one of the best wait staff we have encountered. Such a helpful guy and so accomodating. Also the chef and manager were great."
