PB hotel design editorial

Spreading across 50 acres on the western shore of Lake Pichola, where Udaipur's Aravalli hills recede into silver water, a palace complex was built entirely from scratch in 2002 — not converted from an existing royal structure but conceived as a new Mewar palace from the ground up. The Oberoi Udaivilas was designed by the Mumbai-based firm Nimish Patel and Parul Zaveri of Abhikram, who spent years studying the proportional language of Rajput architecture before placing a single stone. Bansi Paharpur sandstone — the same warm amber used in Udaipur's historic City Palace — clads the colonnaded facades, the chattris, the cusped arches and pierced jali screens, in a construction that cost somewhere in the region of $25 million and took three years to complete. The 87 rooms and suites, many with private plunge pools fed by the property's network of channels and reflecting pools, are arranged around a sequence of interconnected courtyards that draws directly from the haveli tradition. Inside, the interiors carry the atmosphere of a Mewar nobleman's private quarters rather than a purpose-built hotel. Dark ebonised four-poster beds sit on floors alternating between Makrana marble and hand-blocked terracotta tilework, layered with Rajasthani dhurries and kilim rugs in saffron and indigo. The dining rotunda, visible in the images, is among the property's most commanding spaces — a scalloped dome framing a trompe-l'oeil sky, its black and white marble floors echoing the graphic pool surrounds outside, where checkerboard stonework steps down toward the lake in a sequence of terraces planted with bougainvillea.

Huge bedchambers with large private terraces, luxury suites with private swimming pools, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, butler service and 24-hour in-room dining make you feel like royalty. The restaurants serve international and Indian cuisine including regional favourites. A gymnasium, two large swimming pools and a luxury spa offering a range of therapies, add to the ambience of total pampering. "This is my 1000th TripAdvisor review. It is fitting to report on a stay at such a superb hotel. Having had a few days at the marvelous Oberoi in Mumbai, we flew up to the tiny Udaipur airport and our Oberoi driver was waiting for us for the short-ish drive to the far side of Lake Pichola. There we boarded a boat for the pleasant trip across to the Lake to the hotel - what a fabulous way to arrive! A buggy took us up the hill and rose petals showered down on us as we entered the building. Check-in formalities were carried out in the bar where we were introduced to Ibrahim, one of the managers. A delightful chap who we chatted to on several occasions and who introduced us to the delights of Naan bread with cheese and chilli! We had booked 5 nights in a semi- private pool room. At 84 m2 it’s a decent size. Comfy bed - hard mattress (which I like). Pretty good storage space (fully used). Bathroom had an excellent shower with tremendous pressure. Single basin - we’d always prefer twin but not a big issue. Outside is a small patio with two really comfy sun loungers and a table. Gentle steps down into the pool which runs for over 80m along the back of about 12 rooms. Great for a morning swim - or a swim at any time of the day! Temperature of the water was perfect. Actually, the temperature in Udaipur was perfect at about 30 degrees every day with very low humidity (12-15 %) and clear blue skies - bliss. We had breakfast outside on the terrace each day - usually with an omelette to order (I added masala, coriander, chilli for a great kick). Evening meals were taken on the terrace each evening (although we did go across to the Taj Lake Palace one evening). We thoroughly enjoyed different ideas from the menu, Indian wines - and live music and dancers. Our room ladies did an incredible job. I rarely keep a note of names, but Bairisuk, Meba and the lovely Prachi deserve a mention. We were treated to balloons, a cake and even personalised cushions for a special occasion - amazing. In fact, one of the brilliant new uses of technology was the WhatsApp messaging used in the hotel. I would message that we were leaving for breakfast and by return would receive a message saying that the room cleaning would be carried out within 45 minutes. We used this messaging on many occasions and the response is instant. 10/10. Sadly, time passes and on leaving it was nice to meet, and thank the GM Mr Malhotra. He runs a great team. We have stayed in bigger rooms/suites, had private pools, bigger bathrooms and so on, but this Oberoi hotel was the perfect package for us. Mrs W and I agreed on leaving that it is our favourite hotel of all time. Just incredible. I thought the cost was perfectly reasonable."

"I don’t think I have enough superlatives for this hotel. We were lucky enough to stay for 3 nights and it was one of the most wonderful hotel experiences I have had. The building itself self is beautiful and set on the lakes in stunning grounds. The attention to detail is exactly what you would expect and you don’t feel you are in a relatively new hotel. It feels peaceful and calm and like it’s been here forever. I have to cover the staff. They are outstanding. Every interaction without exception was friendly, helpful and perfect. All of the staff we met could not have been better and not a single off note. Lovely people who seem to enjoy their jobs and always have a smile. I honestly can’t single out one person. Housekeeping team were so helpful on every level and we loved all the little touches they left for us. We also received a gift of a beautiful bag each. The food and drinks were exceptional too. We ate in all 3 restaurants and enjoyed them all. Mewar was our favorite so we went twice. Oh and those breakfasts - it was hard this morning to go back to cooking my own. I missed my cauliflower paratha and my plate of fresh cut fruit and nuts. Special shout out to the cinnamon swirls. Delish. Afternoons by the pool were divine. Boat over to the city was excellent way to travel. I can call out each part of the experience but I don’t think that really gives you the full feeling of just how perfect this place is. I would return in a heart beat and if I could award more than 5 stars I would. We were genuinely sad to be leaving. Thank you to everyone who made our visit so wonderful. ❤️❤️❤️"

"Just returned from a wonderful few days in the Oberoi hotel in Udaipur. The manager , Mr Malhotra and his team made our stay here one to remember. Everything about this hotel is superb; the location, the property, the friendly staff and all the amenities were fantastic. Our room had its own pool and a magnificent view of the lake. Memorable meals were taken on the huge outdoor terrace and the dining staff were all amazing, very professional. We are already planning our next stay."

"We would like to share that our stay at The Oberoi Udaivilas was nothing short of spectacular. While the property itself is truly mesmerising, it is the people who make the overall experience so memorable and extraordinary. Every member of the team made us feel completely at home and extended such genuine warmth throughout our stay. Mr. Ibrahim Magdum, Hotel Manager at The Oberoi Udaivilas, ensured that our stay was seamless from the moment we checked in until the time we departed. He took great care to ensure that every detail was perfectly aligned with our preferences, which made us feel truly valued. We will truly miss our stay at The Oberoi Udaivilas until we return again. This experience will remain close to our hearts for a very long time."
