PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the limestone edge of the Bukit Peninsula, where Bali's southern cliffs drop sharply into the Indian Ocean, Alila Villas Uluwatu was conceived by WOHA — the Singapore-based practice whose work consistently navigates the tension between ecological ambition and formal rigour — as a zero-carbon resort embedded within, rather than imposed upon, its terrain. Opened in 2009 across 25 hectares of clifftop scrub, the property's 65 villas and 19 hotel rooms are arranged in low-slung pavilions that recede behind dense indigenous planting, their grass-covered roofs visible in the aerial view as barely-there horizontals threading through the canopy. WOHA's material choices carry the same logic: local palimanan limestone clads the walls with a porous, almost geological texture visible throughout the guestrooms, where it sits in deliberate counterpoint to warm teak flooring and walnut-panelled headboard walls inset with graphic grille panels drawn from traditional Balinese weaving motifs. Folding glass walls dissolve the boundary between bedroom and private infinity pool, the Indian Ocean positioned as a constant vertical in every sightline. The clifftop Sky Bar — a timber-lattice pavilion cantilevered above the main pool, its slatted roof casting geometric shadow across low modular seating — distils the whole project into a single gesture: open to the horizon, rooted in craft, structured by light.

"My partner and I stayed at Alila for our anniversary and it was wonderful - the service was impeccable and we were attended to by the friendliest and kindest staff members our entire stay. Food at the hotel was incredible as well. Special shout-out to Andy from Photo leisure who helped us take a couples photoshoot as part of our stay and did an amaaazing job directing us and capturing these precious memories. We'll be back"

"Although the hotel is excellent in general, we did have an unusual experience with the non-functioning bathroom curtains in our room, which we discovered quite late at night. We didn't make a big deal because we were set to leave the following morning. There weren't any complimentary soft drinks in the hotel's fridge, which was disappointing. Even though they took care of the birthday cake and all, guests at a hotel of this size should have free access to basic necessities like soft drinks. The chef at the restaurant was really accommodating to our requests. In general, I believe that this property may use a little more care, but it is in an excellent location."

"My experience at Alila Villas Uluwatu was fantastic overall. The hotel is beautiful, the staff was extremely welcoming and attentive throughout our stay, and the overall atmosphere was very relaxing. The spa was very clean, and the massages were excellent. The gym was also surprisingly good, with modern and new equipment, which made it easy to keep up with workouts during the trip. We were also very happy to receive a complimentary room upgrade, which made the experience even more special. The only negative point during our stay was the noise coming from Savaya nightclub nearby. My wife and I stayed in room 408, and every night during our 4-night stay we could hear loud music coming from the club. On the weekend — especially Friday — the music went on until almost 1am, which made it difficult to sleep and was quite disturbing at times. Aside from that, the experience was excellent, and the hospitality of the team truly stood out."

"Our family recently spent three nights at Alila Villas Uluwatu, and it was one of the most thoughtful and curated resort experiences in recent memory. From the moment we arrived, every detail felt intentional. Our son was thrilled to have floaties prepared at our private villa pool along with thoughtful kids’ welcome amenities that immediately made him feel welcomed and special. Small touches like these defined the entire stay. Beyond the stunning cliffside setting and architecture, what truly stood out was the property’s sense of purpose. From the farm tour to learning about their sustainable practices, locally sourced ingredients, and even the use of lava rocks for natural cooling, everything felt carefully considered and deeply connected to the environment and local culture. The dining experience at both CIRE and The Warung was exceptional. Every meal was memorable, and breakfast became something we genuinely looked forward to each day because of the rotating daily selections. Most of all, it was the warmth of the people that made this stay so special. Every member of the staff was gracious, attentive, and sincerely kind. Special thanks to Director of Rooms Nor Maya, the Executive Chef, Kadek Sugiantara, and the entire team for making our stay feel so personal and unforgettable. A beautiful final touch was the complimentary photo session with Andy from Photo Leisure, whose guidance helped capture memories our family will treasure for years to come. As first-timers in Bali, it won’t be the last. Alila Villas Uluwatu is the perfect introduction which leaves us planning our next visit."

"Our stay at Alila Villas Uluwatu was an absolute highlight and an experience we will not forget. The hotel is impressively located on the cliffs of Uluwatu, offering breathtaking views of the ocean. From the moment you arrive, there is an immediate wow effect – created by both the spectacular setting and the striking architecture of the property. This continues when entering the villas, which impress with their modern design, generous layout, and complete privacy. The pool and outdoor shower are truly stunning. The service is of the highest standard – attentive, professional, yet pleasantly discreet at all times. A particular highlight is the breakfast at Cire Restaurant, which is served exclusively à la carte. The selection, especially of local dishes, is outstanding in both variety and quality. Enjoying breakfast by the pool with a view of the ocean is the perfect way to start the day. The Warung restaurant in the evening is equally impressive, offering excellent local cuisine at the highest level in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere. There is also direct access to the ocean – after about a 10-minute walk down approximately 600 steps, you reach the coastline. The effort is absolutely worth it to watch the powerful waves or explore the beach at low tide. Swimming is only possible under calm conditions or at low tide. Nearby, the Savaya Club can be reached within a few minutes and is definitely worth a visit. The hotel also offers individually tailored excursions, including private drivers who can be booked flexibly by the hour or for a full day. Transfers can also be conveniently arranged through the hotel at fair prices. Traffic conditions in Bali can be challenging, so it’s important to allow sufficient time even for short distances (for example, around one hour to the airport for just 16 km). The nearby Uluwatu Temple is also well worth a visit, even though it can be quite busy. Another highlight is the Batique Bar, somewhat hidden behind the Cire Restaurant. As it was not pointed out to us during check-in, we discovered it by chance – a true gem with an impressive atmosphere, excellent drinks, and outstanding service. In summary: an exceptional hotel with striking architecture, a spectacular location, and outstanding service – perfect for those seeking design, tranquility, and unique experiences at the highest level."
