PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the limestone edge of the Bukit Peninsula, where Bali's southern cliffs drop sharply into the Indian Ocean, Alila Villas Uluwatu was conceived by WOHA — the Singapore-based practice whose work consistently navigates the tension between ecological ambition and formal rigour — as a zero-carbon resort embedded within, rather than imposed upon, its terrain. Opened in 2009 across 25 hectares of clifftop scrub, the property's 65 villas and 19 hotel rooms are arranged in low-slung pavilions that recede behind dense indigenous planting, their grass-covered roofs visible in the aerial view as barely-there horizontals threading through the canopy. WOHA's material choices carry the same logic: local palimanan limestone clads the walls with a porous, almost geological texture visible throughout the guestrooms, where it sits in deliberate counterpoint to warm teak flooring and walnut-panelled headboard walls inset with graphic grille panels drawn from traditional Balinese weaving motifs. Folding glass walls dissolve the boundary between bedroom and private infinity pool, the Indian Ocean positioned as a constant vertical in every sightline. The clifftop Sky Bar — a timber-lattice pavilion cantilevered above the main pool, its slatted roof casting geometric shadow across low modular seating — distils the whole project into a single gesture: open to the horizon, rooted in craft, structured by light.

"I had a wonderful stay at Alila Villas Uluwatu. The location is absolutely stunning, with incredible ocean views and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to relax from the moment you arrive. The design of the resort is beautiful and blends naturally with the surroundings. What impressed me most was the service — the staff were warm, attentive and always happy to help without ever feeling intrusive. The food was excellent, and every part of the stay felt well organised and comfortable. I also really enjoyed the paths around the resort and the walk down towards the beach. A very special place in Bali with a great balance of nature, design and hospitality. I would definitely love to come back."

"We stayed for 2 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary and so glad we chose this hotel out of 3 others on our island tour for the occasion. It’s 17 years old and could do with a sprinkle of TLC and refresh in places, but it’s an iconic award winning architectural masterpiece with exceptional service to match. Thanks to Vincent and the entire team for an amazing stay and memories for a lifetime. Unique world class hotel experience, location and design."

"The villa itself is absolutely beautiful and the staff were amazing throughout our stay. The hotel also has incredible views of the Indian Ocean. We specifically chose Alila for a staycation because we wanted somewhere peaceful where we could relax, enjoy the villa, and not really have to leave the property. For that purpose, it would have been perfect. That said, I would strongly reconsider staying here over a weekend, especially if there is a wedding or event happening at the hotel. Unfortunately, there was a wedding during our stay, and the loud music, screaming, and overall noise completely ruined the tranquil atmosphere we came here for. Even from inside our villa, the noise was very noticeable late into the night (past 10pm). For a resort at this price point, I really expected the guest experience and peaceful atmosphere to be better protected, especially when private events are taking place. (I also talked to a staff member and they mentioned that this seems to be a recurring concern shared among other guests. They host a lot of weddings and therefore this hotel tends to be noisy during weekends. I would avoid booking Alila during weekends completely just to be safe!) Another thing to keep in mind is that there really isn’t much nearby, and the hotel itself is relatively small. If you’re coming to Bali to explore, go to restaurants, or have lots of things to do, this probably isn’t the most convenient location. But if your goal is simply to stay in a beautiful villa, relax, and enjoy the ocean views, it’s a wonderful setting. Unfortunately, the wedding noise was a big enough issue that it really affected my overall impression of the stay. The property, villas, views, and staff are all lovely, but for the price we paid, I was hoping for a much more peaceful and relaxing experience."
