PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the limestone edge of the Bukit Peninsula, where Bali's southern cliffs drop sharply into the Indian Ocean, Alila Villas Uluwatu was conceived by WOHA — the Singapore-based practice whose work consistently navigates the tension between ecological ambition and formal rigour — as a zero-carbon resort embedded within, rather than imposed upon, its terrain. Opened in 2009 across 25 hectares of clifftop scrub, the property's 65 villas and 19 hotel rooms are arranged in low-slung pavilions that recede behind dense indigenous planting, their grass-covered roofs visible in the aerial view as barely-there horizontals threading through the canopy. WOHA's material choices carry the same logic: local palimanan limestone clads the walls with a porous, almost geological texture visible throughout the guestrooms, where it sits in deliberate counterpoint to warm teak flooring and walnut-panelled headboard walls inset with graphic grille panels drawn from traditional Balinese weaving motifs. Folding glass walls dissolve the boundary between bedroom and private infinity pool, the Indian Ocean positioned as a constant vertical in every sightline. The clifftop Sky Bar — a timber-lattice pavilion cantilevered above the main pool, its slatted roof casting geometric shadow across low modular seating — distils the whole project into a single gesture: open to the horizon, rooted in craft, structured by light.

"did not want to leave this property! This place is a modern balinese oasis that catered to whatever your needs were. Ended our trip here and it was the perfect finale to our weeks long trip. We were ready to go home until we arrived at Alila, and then we did not want to leave. Service was phenomenal, buggy service was useful, and breakfast was basically a 3 course meal. Appetizer, entree, and dessert. The views were breathtaking, you could sit at the cabana and watch the waves or watch the sunset. They offered free yoga and other classes/experiences, and at the end were given a warm goodbye with the staff waving and watching us leave. Not used to places like this so it was an exceptional experience overall."

"It's a very beautiful property, no doubt! Yet, what makes it unforgettable is the authenticity and nuance in the care showcased by the leadership and the entire staff of the Food and Beverage Team. From the beginning of our 5-night stay, we had met outstanding Chef Kadek and Director of F&B Arya Bayuntara, and been introduced to an array of thoughtfully made dishes that addressed our celiac disease, while keeping at the forefront Indonesian cuisine. As one-of-one charismatic Chef Kadek showcased across our stay through his brilliant advice, counsel, and narrative, in partnership with sterling Warung's Chef Eling (an absolute master with all pork and beef dishes!) and stellar Pastry Chef Uriawan (best chocolate mousses EVER!), every single dish was both a celebration of Bali and the larger Indonesian heritage, as well as a manifestation of true joy, respect, and deep hospitality towards guests. We profoundly express our gratitude for the joys and memories you empowered us to forge. And the WHOLE staff at breakfast, led by warm and caring Putu, and at dinner, led by effusive Rai, was clearly always in full synergy with the kitchens, not only knowing how to make sure we were at ease with our gluten free choices, but going beyond, anticipating nuances, additions, and treats (we lost the piece of paper where we had the name of the many female and male staff who also helped us during all meals, and simply want to say profound thank you to each of them: every single person was great!). In terms of the room, there were logistics and romantic components also very thoughtfully coordinated by Victoria and the host and engineering team, that we are deeply grateful for as well. And the pool staff, with Ari, was also quite cool! We wish memorable Chef Kadek and everyone tremendous success in years to come. Credit to the GM for the stellar team you have assembled!"
