PB hotel design editorial

Bill Bensley's obsession with the colonial-era explorer as a design archetype found its most theatrical expression on a forested ridge above Ubud's Petanu River valley, where Capella Ubud opened in 2018 as a camp — not metaphorically but literally, a collection of 22 tented villas and one treehouse suspended among coconut palms and tropical hardwoods on a steep jungle hillside. The structures sit on raised timber platforms, their dark pointed canopies visible at dusk as warm pools of lamplight punctuating the deep green canopy, the whole ensemble closer to a nineteenth-century expedition base than anything the luxury hotel industry had attempted before in Bali. Inside, Bensley's interiors push the theatrical register as far as it will go without tipping into pastiche. Walls lined in deep crimson ikat fabric, ceilings upholstered in batik-printed textile, carved Balinese doors in gilt and lacquered red flanking four-poster beds draped in grey silk — each tent assembled as a private cabinet of curiosities, the furniture mixing French colonial rattan with antique Javanese woodwork and embroidered Uzbek suzani cushions. The pool deck's bar pavilion carries an elaborate engraved metal canopy above teak decking, its bar stools and bentwood chairs arranged against chevron-tiled pool edges that glow jade-green after dark. The effect is less hotel suite than film set, one where every prop has been sourced rather than manufactured.

"Unfortunately my stay at Capella Ubud was deeply frustrating and disappointing, especially considering the hotel’s reputation and price point. As a GHA Titanium member, I was disappointed that the standard elite recognition process was not proactively executed. I was not offered the expected two-tier upgrade initially and only after explicitly asking multiple times was I eventually offered a Valley Tent. Unfortunately, the problems only escalated from there. Although check-in time had already passed, the room was still not ready until around 4:15pm. After finally arriving at the Valley Tent, we quickly realized the room itself was still not properly prepared: - Multiple power outlets were not functioning - The sundeck mattress was soaked and dirty from the afternoon rain - The private pool was extremely cold due to the room’s location deep in the valley under dense canopy coverage - The room orientation was rushed and inadequate, hence we could not figure out how to use the hotel’s old-fashioned telephone system to contact guest services To make matters worse, there are roughly 120 steep steps between my tent and the reception area. Since the phone was unusable, I had to repeatedly walk back and forth multiple times just to report the various issues. What should have been a relaxing luxury stay quickly became physically exhausting and stressful. Eventually, the hotel offered what they described as a “compensation” — an upgrade to a Keliki Tent. However, that room would not be ready until 6:15pm. This meant we had to unpack, repack, relocate again, and endure yet another difficult walk through the terrain. In the end, we only properly settled into a functional room around 6:30pm — nearly three hours after our original arrival. Service responsiveness throughout the stay was also surprisingly slow. Even simple requests such as replacing flashlight batteries or delivering additional water took an excessively long time. While I understand the unique geography and terrain of the resort create logistical challenges, that does not excuse the operational inefficiencies at a property positioning itself as ultra-luxury. Another disappointing moment came during checkout. My reservation included a USD $100 resort credit, which based on prevailing exchange rates should have been worth approximately 1.78 million IDR. However, the hotel insisted on using their own internal conversion rate and only applied 1.5 million IDR instead. While the monetary difference itself may not be huge, the issue is the principle and overall impression it leaves. At a property that markets itself as ultra-luxury, this kind of penny-pinching behavior feels unnecessarily stingy and detracts from the sense of generosity and hospitality guests expect at this level. To be fair, the dining experience was excellent, and the food quality was genuinely very good. Many of the staff members were also polite and well-intentioned. However, the overall experience felt poorly coordinated, physically draining, and far below expectations for a luxury resort of this caliber. Capella Ubud is undeniably beautiful, but luxury hospitality is ultimately about execution, comfort, and seamless service — and unfortunately this stay failed badly in those areas."

"My stay at Capella Ubud Bali was, without a doubt, the best hotel experience I have ever had anywhere in the world. While the overall quality of the resort is exceptional, what truly sets this place apart is its people. Every single staff member greets you with a genuine smile, and even those taking care of the landscaping or cleaning warmly acknowledge guests whenever you pass by. It is rare to see such consistency in hospitality across all levels. There are a few individuals I would especially like to recognize. From the moment we arrived, Duty Manager Vidi welcomed us with warmth and positivity that immediately set the tone for our stay. He went far beyond simply handling the check-in process—he made us feel genuinely welcomed. Throughout our stay, he consistently greeted us whenever we crossed paths, even remembering us and greeting us in Korean. His kindness felt sincere and personal rather than procedural, and seeing him always lifted our mood. He is truly the kind of staff member who represents the essence of great hospitality. During our stay, we also joined a morning yoga class led by Hendra. Despite us being beginners, he guided us patiently and ensured we could follow comfortably. His attentiveness made the session both enjoyable and meaningful, and it was impressive to see such genuine care even in activity programs. Another unforgettable moment came during the trekking program, when my companion slightly injured their ankle. We simply asked if any medicine was available, but Ayu went out of her way to personally bring it to our tent and check on the condition. She continued to follow up and showed great care for our overall experience, which made a lasting impression. At the pool, although I did not catch the name, a senior staff member welcomed us with a cheerful attitude and ensured we could fully relax and enjoy our time. At check-out, Reena assisted us with a warm smile and professionalism, but I would especially like to highlight Duty Manager Yuni. She went far beyond her role, staying with us until the very end and ensuring that our departure was just as pleasant as our arrival. She sincerely checked on my companion’s ankle once again and showed genuine concern. Her thoughtful attention made our final moments incredibly memorable, and through her, I truly understood why Indonesian hospitality is so highly regarded worldwide. The resort itself, designed by Bill Bensley, offers a completely unique experience compared to typical resorts. The explorer-themed concept is immersive and distinctive, creating a sense of adventure while allowing for peaceful relaxation in the rainforest. With its impeccable service and tranquil natural setting, this is a resort I would wholeheartedly recommend. If you are visiting Ubud, this is a place you absolutely must experience. (Stayed from April 9 to 11, 2026 under the name Jaewon Lee.) "An utterly incredible stay. From the moment we arrived, Capella Ubud made clear that every detail — no matter how small — had been considered with extraordinary care. The team was wonderful: attentive, warm, and effortlessly thoughtful at every step. It is the kind of hospitality that makes you feel genuinely looked after. The experience itself was nothing short of magical. Set within the rainforest, every moment felt deeply intentional — from the design of the tents to the gentle rhythm of the day. There were quiet pauses where time seemed to slow, where we found ourselves simply taking it all in. That, to us, is the highest luxury. What sets Capella apart is how seamlessly the setting, service, and spirit of the place speak a single language. The attention to detail — from the thoughtful touches in the tent to the way each experience unfolds — reflects a team that is deeply, genuinely proud of what they create together. A very special thank you to Christian Jaquier and the team, whose warmth and thoughtfulness throughout our stay made an already exceptional experience feel truly personal. You made us feel completely at ease and wonderfully cared for. We will absolutely be back."

"Expect the unexpected. The style of the camp is extraordinary, as are the food and its preparation, the activities, the staff, and so on. Best to experience it for yourself"

"It was my first time in Bali, and I had a truly memorable experience. We planned this trip to recharge, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. We stayed at Valley Tent, No. 27 The Panther, located in the middle of the valley, which gave us a real sense of peace and privacy. The rooms were very clean and well maintained, especially considering they are set in the middle of the forest. Being surrounded by the sounds of nature made the whole experience feel truly worth it. We were warmly welcomed in traditional Balinese style by Reena, our camp host, and a special thank you to Ayu, the resort’s culturalist, who guided us from the moment we arrived and was always there to assist. Everything felt smooth and effortless because of her. We had breakfast at MADS LANGE and it was such a beautiful start to the day. Our table overlooked the pool and coconut trees, creating a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Era took great care of us throughout the meal, thank you. For a first-time visitor, I highly recommend taking a walk to the temple right after breakfast. It's the perfect time to go. We also enjoyed the complimentary evening cocktails. Great drinks and a lovely setting. I especially loved the tent’s interior design. It felt both stylish and cozy. On our second night, we had dinner at API JIWA, which was a standout experience. The multi-course menu felt like an intimate chef’s table, with each dish prepared individually by the chefs. The concept beautifully blends Japanese grilling with Balinese root cuisine. I didn't catch all the staff’s names, but their attentiveness really stood out. You could feel the care in every detail. The cocktails we ordered were also excellent. We checked out quite early but the team thoughtfully prepared a breakfast box for us to take along. I'd also like to mention Pasek, our driver, and the rest of the team who remembered our names. It was such a small touch but it meant a lot. This definitely will not be our only visit. We are already planning to come back and stay longer next time!"
