PB hotel design editorial
Carved into a steep river valley above Ubud, where the Ayung gorge cuts through the jungle at the heart of Bali, COMO Shambhala Estate was conceived not as a conventional hotel but as a residential wellness retreat built around the landscape itself. Architect Cheong Yew Kuan and interior designer Koichiro Ikebuchi shaped the 25-villa property — opened in 2005 — around the contours of the hillside, dispersing thatched-roof pavilions through eight hectares of tropical garden rather than imposing any unified formal plan. The carved Javanese joglo structures visible in the images are antique pieces, some centuries old, transplanted to the site and integrated into gathering spaces where dense teak fretwork screens frame views through to the jungle beyond. The guest villas draw on the same vernacular — polished ironwood floors, woven bamboo ceiling panels, open-sided verandahs suspended above the canopy — while keeping furnishings deliberately spare: low timber daybed frames, white linen canopy beds, and batik-trimmed bedding that registers as restraint rather than austerity. The curved lap pool at the property's wellness centre, its white-tiled basin catching morning mist off the valley, signals a different architectural register entirely — more modernist in plan, its cantilevered roof supported on cylindrical columns that step cleanly away from the surrounding organic abundance. Water runs throughout the grounds in long stone-edged channels bordered by frangipani, pulling the whole composition into a slow, meditative rhythm that is the estate's defining quality.

"Having had the opportunity to experience the serene atmosphere of Ubud at COMO Shambhala Estate, it was truly a memorable stay, with exceptional service from the moment of arrival until departure. The entire team was attentive and welcoming, ensuring that all our needs were met even before we asked. The room was beautiful, featuring a spacious terrace with an open-air daybed, perfect for relaxation. A special highlight was the pool, offering a stunning view of lush greenery that created a calming and refreshing ambiance after a busy period. A heartfelt thank you to Ms Karti, our butler during the stay, whose dedication and passion were truly remarkable. Everything was thoughtfully prepared in advance, making our experience seamless and comfortable. I would also like to extend our appreciation to Mr Purna for his assistance during check in for driving us to the room showing us around and sharing his recommendations for Ubud, as well as to the housekeeping and breakfast teams for their excellent support. It is hard to describe anything less than outstanding, an exceptional service experience and a truly memorable stay. We would absolutely return in the future. Thank you!!"

"I booked a stay at COMO Shambhala for my parents’ anniversary, and it exceeded every expectation. The staff went above and beyond to make their visit special. Their room was stunning with an incredible view, and the property itself is immaculate—lush, tranquil, and truly transporting. The food was both hearty and delicious, and every staff member they encountered was warm and attentive. The airport transportation arranged by the hotel was also reliable and on time, which made everything seamless. My parents said it was their favorite stays ever. I really wanted this to be a special trip for them, and I’m so appreciative of everything the staff did to make it truly unforgettable."

"COMO Shambhala is truly something special. Tucked into the jungle of Ubud and backing onto the Ayung River, the setting alone is magical—especially the 400 steps leading down to serene natural pools beside the rushing river. From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. Dayu and Sapha arranged everything beautifully, from a sunrise temple visit to exploring rice fields, a coffee farm, and Ubud itself. Our Dirga was kind, safe, and a joy to spend time with. Our guide, Yudian, made the trip unforgettable. A local from a nearby village, she brought such warmth and depth to every experience—from guiding us through Bali to leading a deeply moving water blessing ceremony with traditional music. We even brought her rafting with us on the Ayung, which says everything. What truly sets Shambhala apart is its people—every single person we encountered was warm, genuine, and attentive. Without a doubt, the best hotel staff I’ve ever experienced. Pure magic from start to finish."

"I am writing this review as I leave the Como Shambhala Estate (CSE) and I am already anticipating my return. This is my 5th time at CSE and it is quite simply one of the most beautiful and friendly places I have ever been. What CSE is to me: Quiet luxury. Restorative. Unplugged. Serene. Chill. Nature. Wellness. AUTHENTIC. If you want a place to escape the world and recharge, look no further. If you want a ‘scene’ or a disco or great bar or kids club, consider another place. SUITES: CSE has a variety of suites - which are mostly stand alone, with some exceptions. Some suites have their own pool while others are situated in one of the 5 ‘residences’ which each have a 4-5 villas centered around a large pool and a common living and dining room space. Given this setup, you will always find a lounger and a personal place to chill. There is no ‘best’ residence or suite, just style and preferences… In our case, we stayed at the two bedroom ‘Como Suite’ in the Umabona residence. From an architectural perspective, the suite is spectacular. The design incorporates open air common spaces that wrap around a central open core with a private pool that is accessed through steps down. The pool goes under the structure and opens up to another infinity edged pool that overlooks the jungle. Upstairs, the Como Suite features a living room, dining room, TV room and two bedrooms, each with a study and small bathroom for late night visits. Downstairs, each bedroom has a bathroom which is probably double the size of most NY apartments. From the bathroom, you have a secret door that gives you access to the pool. Suffice it to say, this a a luxurious place to stay. The Como Suite is the furthest suite from the spa and restaurant, but we enjoyed the walk. The Como Suite is extremely private and let us spend the morning quietly listening to the river below. DINING: There are two restaurants at CSE - Glow and Kudus. Glow is more ‘international’ while Kudus focuses on Indonesian cuisine. Breakfast is delicious and served à la carte at Kudus - there is no buffet here. You can certainly get traditional favorites such as scrambled eggs or omelettes, but they have many healthy and local alternatives to try as well. For example, the zucchini waffles with smoked salmon were wonderful. Rest assured that CSE also has great Indonesian coffee options. Overlooking the jungle below, Kudus is a great place for a lazy breakfast. We enjoyed dinner at both Glow and Kudus. Food was excellent and flavorful with a ‘healthy’ twist. Don’t look for spaghetti or French fries or cheeseburgers on the menu (although, I bet they would make them for you). Instead, think steamed fish and vegetables in a delicate ginger and soy sauce or vegetable lasagna or poke bowls. Don’t miss the tuna tartare or the chicken sate. We went out one night for dinner and we all said that we preferred the food at CSE. SPA: The Ojas Spa is world class. Beautiful facilities with very talented therapists. In my case, I had a deep tissue massage, a Taksu massage and a Thai massage. Utami was my primary therapist and truly delivered what I consider to be the best massage of my life. I told her that I was having issues with my sciatica and she immediately responded by saying that she would have a feel but, would likely focus on my gluts and IT bands. She received a great deal of pain and stress and made recommendations for some stretches as well. She followed up with subsequent treatments and again, I thoroughly enjoyed them. The treatment rooms at Ojas all overlook small gardens with fountains. Some have private bathrooms and outdoor showers - take advantage! One of the things I also enjoyed was the ginger tea served after a treatment - don’t miss it! GROUNDS: The grounds are beautiful. The residences, restaurants and spa are set up high on a hilltop with jungle and river below. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk around the grounds and see the amazing scenery and the mineral springs. Hiking does require one to be nimble and somewhat fit going up and down the steep hillside, but it is so rewarding. Just look at the pics :-) PEOPLE: Last, but certainly not least are the people at CSE, who are all wonderful and friendly. In our case, our personal assistant was Mr. Wan, a young man with a bright smile. Wan made sure all of our details were looked after, including spa appointments, dining reservations, and transportation. In addition, we had the pleasure of meeting Rahayu at breakfast, Wardika at Yoga, Yudian at Hydrotherapy, and many more. THANK YOU!!!"
