PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a steep river valley above Ubud, where the Ayung gorge cuts through the jungle at the heart of Bali, COMO Shambhala Estate was conceived not as a conventional hotel but as a residential wellness retreat built around the landscape itself. Architect Cheong Yew Kuan and interior designer Koichiro Ikebuchi shaped the 25-villa property — opened in 2005 — around the contours of the hillside, dispersing thatched-roof pavilions through eight hectares of tropical garden rather than imposing any unified formal plan. The carved Javanese joglo structures visible in the images are antique pieces, some centuries old, transplanted to the site and integrated into gathering spaces where dense teak fretwork screens frame views through to the jungle beyond. The guest villas draw on the same vernacular — polished ironwood floors, woven bamboo ceiling panels, open-sided verandahs suspended above the canopy — while keeping furnishings deliberately spare: low timber daybed frames, white linen canopy beds, and batik-trimmed bedding that registers as restraint rather than austerity. The curved lap pool at the property's wellness centre, its white-tiled basin catching morning mist off the valley, signals a different architectural register entirely — more modernist in plan, its cantilevered roof supported on cylindrical columns that step cleanly away from the surrounding organic abundance. Water runs throughout the grounds in long stone-edged channels bordered by frangipani, pulling the whole composition into a slow, meditative rhythm that is the estate's defining quality.

"We stayed 4 nights at the 3-bedoom villa in Sep. Before arrival, we saw some pictures online and was a bit concerned with the aesthetics but were gladly proven wrong - the lobby was beautiful and serene and sort of Aman-lite. Service was warm and attentive from the get go, and our butler, Purna, was better than all of our previous butler at the bali Amans. He made sure we had enough activities to do each day and that all our meals were taken care of. The hotel grounds were expansive, once you did the estate walk you really do understand why this place commands a relatively high price for the low room count and for all the space you get. The spring pool with the viewing deck was beyond amazing. The boutique, yoga pavilion, new spa and restaurants were also fantastic. Our yoga teacher for the in-villa session was equally outstanding. Food was healthy yet delicious. We will be sure to return to this place, most likely over Amandari for our next visit to Ubud. Useful tips: The villa itself is just outside the main hotel complex with a 2-minute buggy ride away, so please keep that in mind if you want to book this room type. Some of the residences are renovated while the others are waiting in turn to be refurbished, so do enquire when you book."

"The best hotel I've been to in Bali. So quiet and peaceful with such an incredible view. The service is 10/10 and the food is amazing as expected. Can't wait to go back."

"We spent five unforgettable days at this wonderful hotel, and from the moment we arrived, everything felt extraordinary. We came quite exhausted from a previous trip and left feeling completely renewed. The atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and the entire team made our stay truly special. A big thank you to Nyoman, our driver, who picked us up at the airport and later drove us around Ubud. We even requested him again because he was so friendly, warm, and he made every long car ride feel effortless. We also loved our walk with Gede from the activity team, who took us through the nearby village and rice fields. It was an authentic, intimate experience with no other tourists around, and he shared so many interesting insights in a calm, easygoing way. When we arrived, Nizel welcomed us so kindly that we instantly felt at home. Throughout our entire stay, our two butlers, Shafa & Mudana, supported us with everything - from organizing activities to helping us plan our days in and out of the hotel. Their care, kindness, and attention to detail made our stay truly memorable!!! We also enjoyed every part of the hotel’s facilities. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection ranging from local Asian dishes to more western options. We absolutely loved the spa - we all had the COMO Shambhala Signature Massage and agreed it was the best massage of our lives. The spa has been recently renovated and looks fantastic. My husband also used the gym several times and found it very comfortable, modern, and well-equipped after its renovation. One of the most magical surprises was the property’s private waterfall, only a short 10-minute walk away. Having sunbeds and a peaceful space to relax right by the waterfall felt like something out of a dream, we had never experienced anything like that in any hotel before. Overall, this place is a true hidden gem ✨✨✨ The staff are genuinely kind and caring, and we were honestly emotional when it was time to leave. We cannot recommend this hotel enough and would return in a heartbeat ❤️"

"Possibly the very best resort we have ever experienced. We arrived from the chaos of Ubud traffic to Como Shambhala, around a 15 minute drive. We were greeted with cold towels, tea and beautiful flower garlands. Our personal assistant Shafa was an absolute angel who catered to our every need. We were taken to our villa, which blew us away. The children had a separate entrance and balcony to us downstairs, giving us all space to relax. We had a huge deck with infinity pool and jacuzzi, a swing bed and plenty of space to relax as a family. The room was stunning, with a huge dressing area and sauna/ shower. The in room dining perfect after long days exploring the area. The breakfast was perfect - the menus cater for wellness and healthy choices and loved all the smoothies and juices available. The kids loved the buckwheat pancakes. We were so sad to leave and will definitely return for longer to this little haven that left us all refreshed and relaxed. There were so many things we didn’t have time to experience here that we wanted to try. Thank you so much Shafa, for everything."
