PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a steep river valley above Ubud, where the Ayung gorge cuts through the jungle at the heart of Bali, COMO Shambhala Estate was conceived not as a conventional hotel but as a residential wellness retreat built around the landscape itself. Architect Cheong Yew Kuan and interior designer Koichiro Ikebuchi shaped the 25-villa property — opened in 2005 — around the contours of the hillside, dispersing thatched-roof pavilions through eight hectares of tropical garden rather than imposing any unified formal plan. The carved Javanese joglo structures visible in the images are antique pieces, some centuries old, transplanted to the site and integrated into gathering spaces where dense teak fretwork screens frame views through to the jungle beyond. The guest villas draw on the same vernacular — polished ironwood floors, woven bamboo ceiling panels, open-sided verandahs suspended above the canopy — while keeping furnishings deliberately spare: low timber daybed frames, white linen canopy beds, and batik-trimmed bedding that registers as restraint rather than austerity. The curved lap pool at the property's wellness centre, its white-tiled basin catching morning mist off the valley, signals a different architectural register entirely — more modernist in plan, its cantilevered roof supported on cylindrical columns that step cleanly away from the surrounding organic abundance. Water runs throughout the grounds in long stone-edged channels bordered by frangipani, pulling the whole composition into a slow, meditative rhythm that is the estate's defining quality.

"This was my second time at COMO Shambhala Estate - I first came three years ago, and honestly I never stopped thinking I wanted to come back! I've stayed at a lot of nice and luxury hotels over the years but this one is still my favourite, hands down. The setting alone it's increadible: jungle all around, a waterfall on the property, nothing but nature sounds. It's just built for slowing down. The villa where we stayed it was gorgeous. They've renovated recently and somehow made it even better without losing what made it special in the first place. But honestly, it's the people who make this place. Nizel gave us the warmest welcome, and Ayu, our butler, took care of us the whole stay and even helped set up a surprise for my partner. As well, a huge thanks also to the F&B and front desk teams - genuinely kind, attentive, smiling every day, no exceptions. Leaving actually made me emotional, which doesn't happen often. Not many hotels leave that kind of impression through the people alone!!! If you want more than just a luxury hotel, somewhere you can actually switch off and feel at home, I can't recommend COMO Shambhala enough. We're already looking forward to going back!!"

"We booked to stay 8nights at Como and we loved it so much we extended our stay another 6nights. I couldn’t recommend it more highly. The estate itself is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, immaculately maintained, and surrounded by stunning rainforest. It was the perfect place to relax, reset, and disconnect from the outside world. There was no sounds of traffic or dogs parking which I loved and made my stay feel very exclusive. The wellness facilities and treatments were exceptional. The food was another highlight—every meal was fresh, nutritious, and delicious. we ate at the glow restaurant every night. What truly made the experience special was the outstanding service. Every member of the team went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and memorable. Their genuine care and hospitality made me feel completely looked after. Thank you to everyone at COMO Shambhala Estate for such an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to return in the future."

"“Wow”. Thats all we kept saying for the whole time we were there! It’s located in the middle of the jungle next to the Ayung River and you can walk down to the river within the estate. It’s amazing. Genuinely incredible. It was fully booked but felt empty (in a good way), you only really see people at breakfast, and even then it’s probably only 30 ish people. It’s quiet, relaxing, luxurious. The place is incredible, just needs to be seen to be believed. Once again, the Como staff make this place what it is. The estate itself is magical, it’s like being in a Jurassic Park movie (minus the dangerous animals). The rooms (residences) are huge but still understated luxury, you feel the design and intention but it’s not flashy and shiny and gaudy resort style, it’s perfect. We saw monkeys at breakfast - they were so close. Very cool. There are a lot of steps, so just be aware of this. That’s the beauty of this place, it’s built around the landscape. If you even get the chance to stay one night then do it. You won’t be disappointed."

"This is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Food was incredible, service was discrete and exceptional and the activity list was really good. Special shout to to my personal assistant, Rudana, who organised everything seamlessly. I cannot wait to return!"

"It's hard to put into words exactly how this place makes you feel. The first thing that struck me was the view. Lush, expansive rainforest stretching as far as the eye can see. There is a sense of calm here that is difficult to describe and even harder to leave behind. The service is warm, personal and genuinely caring. Each guest is assigned a personal assistant who is available via WhatsApp throughout their stay. I didn't realise this was a service I needed until I experienced it, but it made everything so smooth and effortless. The residences are beautiful, offering modern luxury while still retaining plenty of Balinese charm. Thoughtful touches are everywhere, from the complimentary private bar stocked with fresh juices and homemade biscuits, replenished daily, to the smart Japanese toilet in our room. It was the small details like these that elevated the entire experience. As the estate is built into the hillside, there are a number of steps and walking paths throughout the property. However, buggies are readily available and the team are always happy to transport guests wherever they need to go. A schedule of daily activities is included, with additional wellness experiences available for those wanting to immerse themselves further. Wellness isn't just a buzzword here. It is woven naturally into every aspect of the estate. My massage experience was exceptional and easily ranks among the best I've ever had. Breakfast was a standout. The à la carte menu is focused on health and wellbeing, with creative flavour combinations and quality ingredients that feel both nourishing and indulgent. One of my favourite experiences was walking down through the forest to Kedara Spring. Sitting beside the natural springs, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, before taking a dip in one of the three spring fed pools, was incredibly special. More than a luxury resort, this is a place to slow down and reconnect. It leaves a lasting impression and evokes an emotional response that stays with you long after you leave. For those who value exceptional service, wellness, privacy and a genuine connection with nature, the experience speaks for itself. The attention to detail, thoughtful inclusions and the way the estate makes you feel create a level of value that extends far beyond the accommodation alone."
