PB hotel design editorial

Canggu's surf-village identity — part rice-field bohemia, part creative expat enclave — made it an unlikely address for a COMO property when COMO Uma Canggu opened in 2016, and the design brief had to hold both registers without losing either. Architect Grounds Kent and interior designer Koichiro Ikebuchi navigated that tension by stacking a low-rise concrete and dark-timber block along the Indian Ocean shoreline, its tiered balconies planted with dense trailing greenery that softens what might otherwise read as resort formalism. The pool — a long, kidney-curved body of water pressed directly against the ground-floor rooms — dissolves the boundary between accommodation wing and garden in a way that owes more to the compound villas of Seminyak's earlier generation than to conventional hotel planning. Inside the 119 rooms and villas, the palette runs to cream travertine floors, pale oak bed platforms, and deep navy diamond-quilted headboards that pull the colour of the sea indoors. Sliding glass walls open entire room faces onto private terraces or plunge pools framed by timber slatted screens. The beach club, visible in the images as an open-sided pavilion of white-painted steel and woven bamboo panels with characteristic Balinese black-and-white poleng check columns, leans harder into the Canggu vernacular — rattan lounge chairs, grey linen day beds, vivid ikat cushions — giving the property two distinct moods that coexist without contradiction.

"Loved the Glow-restaurant. If you want to eat healthy, go here. I had a smoothie bowl, which was delicious, and I would like to try all their pastries, juices and salads as well. Everything looked fantastic, and the staff was awesome🙏🏼 (Ari in Canggu)🥰"

"This is my second visit, and one of the reasons I keep coming back to Canggu during my trips to Bali. The location honestly could not be better, and the huge swimming pool will truly impress you. Everything is well taken care of, and the food quality is excellent.Simply sitting in the restaurant and looking out at the ocean is enough to make everything feel perfect."

"This hotel is very far from the airport and it takes 2 hours to get there in traffic. It is SO Overrated. I will never stay at a Como again. One restaurant and some swing seats,? So what. The room was in a poor condition with many badly made joins and issues. I didn't like this hotel and outside the shops are terrible and the footpaths awful. Its isolated on a dirty beach with only one restaurant. My travel agent talked me into it. A mistake. The food was good in the only pace you could eat at at least"

"Great place with good location right in front of the beach. Very clean, staff are amazing a very kind. Having breakfast at the beach club right in front of the beach is very relaxing. Delicious food and great staff. At first, we had a bit of an issue with the room, then the staff were very kind and upgraded us to a suite. So, if you could, pick a suite instead of a room. If you care about extra comfort, a suite is always better. If you want to stay in shape, they have a great gym too. We stayed here for 5 nights, Definitely recommend COMO UMA 5/5. If you like surfing, there are plenty of surfing schools that you can join for a day or two, tried it, was amazing."

"The property is located on the beach in Canggu. It is great to have breakfast overlooking the sea and watching the surfers. It is a bit of a walk to the area where most of the shops are (the area around Love Anchor market) however there are some shops along the street and the walk is interesting. It is actually next door to La Brisa where the Sunday market takes place which is very convenient. We had a pool entry room which was large. We had it set up so our daughter was also in the room and she fit just fine. The room was clean but starting to show its age. It was fantastic having direct pool access. The pool is huge - to swim the length takes some time. We did not use the beach side pool but it looked nice. Housekeeping was excellent. the Gym is excellent and we participated in the included yoga sessions. The session were excellent. One yoga session used hanging TRX straps and we could feel every muscle after that! We had facials at the Spa and they were of a high standard. The food is good. We always like the COMO breakfast especially the Real toast. We had some lunches at the hotel and they were good. There is a great Italian restaurant just outside the hotel called Numero Quattro - make a booking. Pizza Fabriqua was also pretty good as was Bar Boa Cafe ( a lot further to walk). The service was good . The restaurant staff were great at trying to seat us at our preferred table. We had a few days of very heavy rain in the afternoon, and we enjoyed sitting being able to watch the storm from the restaurant. When we were there it looked like the Regent next door was just being finished. It looks quite high end although a lot larger. With that in mind I think the Como will probably have to do some upgraded to deal with wear and tear. Canggu itself was nice but probably not somewhere we would return to as the traffic to leave is horrendous. It was also not as walkable as other areas we have stayed."
