PB hotel design editorial

Strung across a hillside above one of Bali's most storied fishing bays, a village of 147 thatched-roof villas descends toward the Indian Ocean in a composition that owes more to Balinese sacred architecture than to conventional resort planning. The Four Seasons Bali at Jimbaran Bay, which opened in 1993 to designs by Balinese architect Hendra Hadiprana, treats the traditional meru tower and alang-alang thatched pavilion not as decorative gestures but as the structural grammar of the entire property. From the aerial, the scale of the ambition is immediately legible — each villa a discrete compound disappearing into the tropical canopy, the whole arranged so that the beachfront infinity pool and its open-sided restaurant pavilion anchor a shoreline otherwise given over entirely to white sand and breaking surf. Inside the villas, the vocabulary is consistent and precise: steeply pitched joglo-style ceilings lined with woven bamboo matting, carved grey paras stone panels set into whitewashed walls, wide-plank teak floors, and four-poster beds draped in white voile that catches the coastal breeze through sliding timber doors. The open-air dining pavilion shown in the images deploys woven rattan pendant lights and split-bamboo ceiling ribs in a way that feels entirely continuous with the surrounding architecture rather than layered on top of it. Hadiprana's achievement was to demonstrate that international luxury hospitality and Balinese spatial tradition need not compromise each other — a proposition that every subsequent resort on this island has been measured against.

"This is the best customer care and service I have ever received in a hotel & we have stayed at plenty top class hotels. The staff are outstanding, every single one. We were made to feel welcomed throughout the resort and nothing was too much trouble. The facilities are excellent and our accommodation was first class. Honestly, do not hesitate to stay here if you value great service, stand out facilities and excellent food. The breakfast in particular was heavenly."

"Pros - Sincere, supererogatory, friendly staff who do their utmost to solve any issues very quickly. - Really nice private pool area overlooking the ocean (see photos) - Restaurant food is very reasonably priced and they will make anything you want if it's not available at the time. - Two pool areas and lots of restaurants - Guests behave properly - ie no kids running around screaming, no guests phones on loudspeaker, and no people talking annoyingly loudly in restaurants Cons - The live music wasn't of a high enough standard for the price - The restaurants changed their menu each time we visited which was confusing... for example a set fixed menu with little choice apart sea food was frustrating. The food quality was very good however.."

"Our stay was simply amazing. Thanks to the whole hotel team that made the experience truly special, you can feel that people here do their job from the heart. A special thank you to Antonio, the Resort Manager, and Arya from Guest Experience for their professionalism, kindness, and support throughout our stay. The yoga classes were fun and id like to thank to Putra and Mini for aerial yoga. The villa, while not new, is very well maintained, comfortable, and offers a stunning sea view. The spa was great. Highly recommend to go for deep knead massage with Tirmi and Suastri. We would be very happy to come back again."

"Exceptions service from every person we encountered that made us feel both deeply at home and genuinely personal. From Agnes and her team, to the housekeeping teams, there was a calm warmth and kindness that was truly genuine. Breakfast was sensational with something for everyone, along with a huge lizard in the pond. When we needed additional help, nothing was too much effort, even if it involved going off-site to find something. We had a short break, but there is so much more to explore, we'll be back!"

"The Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay delivers an experience that feels both deeply luxurious and genuinely personal. From the moment I arrived, Ayu at the front desk welcomed me with a calm warmth that instantly set the tone for the stay. The villa itself was stunning—spacious, beautifully designed, and complete with a private plunge pool overlooking the gardens. Housekeeping, led by Made, kept everything immaculate without ever feeling intrusive. Breakfast at Taman Wantilan was a highlight each morning, thanks to Chef Wayan, who insisted I try his signature sambal that somehow managed to be both fiery and addictive. Throughout the resort, the staff seemed to anticipate needs before I voiced them, and the atmosphere felt like a serene Balinese village rather than a large luxury property. It’s the kind of place where service feels heartfelt, the setting feels timeless, and leaving feels surprisingly difficult."
