PB hotel design editorial

Hovering above the Ayung River gorge on a sculpted concrete platform, the Four Seasons Bali at Sayan represents one of the most spatially audacious hotel commissions of the 1990s — a building by John Heah that arrives not through a grand entrance but via a footbridge that deposits guests onto the roof of an elliptical lotus pond, from which they descend into the resort rather than climb toward it. That inversion of conventional arrival logic, conceived when the property opened in 1998, remains disorienting in the best possible way: the jungle canopy surrounds you before a single room comes into view. The 18 suites and 42 villas cascade down the steep river valley in terraced clusters, connected by pathways through stands of coconut palm and tropical hardwood. Interiors work through dark teak joinery, carved wooden headboards with intricate floral relief, and louvered shutters that dissolve the boundary between bedroom and the garden beyond — details drawn from Balinese craft traditions rather than imported as ornament. The pool deck at river level runs in a long sinuous curve directly above the Ayung, with mosaic-tiled lap pools edging close enough to the bank that the sound of moving water enters continuously. The bar's crescent-shaped limestone counter, set beneath a teak-slatted ceiling and open on all sides to the tree canopy, captures the property's central ambition: architecture that refuses to compete with the landscape it was built to serve.

"We had such a wonderful stay and want to give a special thank you to Dedi for the lovely check-in experience and for making our stay so memorable. From the moment we arrived, everyone was incredibly welcoming, kind, and attentive. The villa was simply wow, absolutely speechless! Every detail was beautiful, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. We truly felt cared for throughout our stay and can’t wait to come back again."

"It was overall an amazing experiences. The whole staff was very friendly ALL the time. The view from the Ayung Terrace into the jungle is unbelievable. The SPA experiences were simply outstanding. The whole resort was clean, our "room" in the main building (2 levels) was just perfect for us. Next time we'd like to stay in on of the villas which offers also a plunge pool. The resort offers several restaurants which we experienced all - all great: cocktails (I could recommend the Bee Sting), balinese food - amazing. Just one tip: get used to mother natures sind - you hear the river all day which we didn't find disturbing however it took as a night to get used to night music from the frogs :) We also experienced the "can you keep a secret" - tour which is absolutely recommendable as it shows little different insights than tourists would experience. Overall it was one of the best vacations we ever had, top level from staff, food, area. Thanks to all members of the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan."

"⸻ An exceptional stay from start to finish. The property is beautiful, the rooms are thoughtfully designed, and the overall atmosphere feels both elevated and relaxing. The spa experience was outstanding, and the food was great—consistently high quality and well executed. What truly stood out was the service. I became ill during our stay, and the team took incredible care of me—kind, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful in every interaction. A truly top-tier hotel experience."

"We have been to the Four Seasons Sayan now several times and this time is no different - nothing has changed. The team led by a very capable Resort Manager Tim Churchmack are still outstanding. The word "no" doesn't exist at this resort. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived at the airport and of course on arrival to the resort. Throughout our 7 days we were treated by all as if we were family - excellent service from the reception to the pool, restaurants and spa. A special mention needs to go to the Chefs - led by Chef Suta all the chefs including Sous Chef's Ong and Paul could not do enough for us preparing food that was suitable for our diets that may not necessarily be on the menu - thank you to you all. We look forward to returning."

"Beyond our best expectations, supremely hospitable, with a very chilled vibe but also so efficient....my wife said they almost anticipated her needs before she even thought about it! The Villa (No.58 I think...) was stunning, enormous but also so intimate and private. After our very tiring flights from London it was an absolute joy to fall asleep in one of the most comfortable beds imaginable. My wife and I were both celebrating our birthday, a day apart, the hotel gave us both beautifully delicious cakes on each night, plus very generously a bottle of champagne 🥂 Two nights were really not enough - we'd love to return."
