PB hotel design editorial

Spread across a ridgeline above the sawah fields of Ubud's Kelusa district, with Gunung Agung and Gunung Batur rising through morning haze on the horizon, the property that became Gdas Bali Health and Wellness Resort was shaped around a single governing idea: that the landscape itself is the primary therapeutic agent. The architecture earns that ambition. Villa pavilions step down the hillside in a linear sequence, their dark-stained timber louvred screens and volcanic paras stone walls absorbing rather than imposing on the surrounding green. Pointed metal roof forms punctuate the ridge in a contemporary riff on traditional Balinese thatched meru profiles, while full-height frameless glazing dissolves the boundary between sleeping quarters and the paddies that extend to the horizon. Inside, the material palette runs to warm teak strip ceilings, polished grey volcanic stone floors, and verde marble washbasins — textures that feel locally grounded without resorting to pastiche. Ikat-weave bed runners in saffron and crimson introduce Balinese textile culture as the single decorative gesture against otherwise restrained linen and timber surfaces. The restaurant's curved timber-lined ceiling and floor-to-ceiling glazing give the room the atmosphere of a pavilion suspended between terrace and canopy, furnished with low-backed teak chairs and rattan pendants. At the pool terrace, teak sun loungers and white-draped cabana frames line a dark-edged lap pool, the rice fields beginning immediately where the lawn ends — a boundary so deliberate it feels designed to remind guests exactly where they are.

"I’ve just returned from a 5-day stay at Gdas Bali Health and Wellness Resort (3 day detox retreat), and I can honestly say it has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. This was completely out of my comfort zone. As a solo female traveller in my forties, I arrived feeling tired, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to expect - especially as I’m not particularly spiritual and had never done anything like a wellness retreat before. But from the moment I arrived, I felt safe, supported, and genuinely cared for. Every single detail of my stay was thoughtfully planned - from my meals, to treatments, to daily activities. The team created a personalised programme that helped me reset both physically and mentally. I was gently guided through meditation, yoga, and even a water purification ceremony at a local temple - something I was initially nervous about, but which turned out to be one of the most powerful and grounding experiences of my life. The food was delicious! I am not vegan or vegetarian, and I do enjoy a drink, so I was unsure how I would find a fully plant-based, alcohol-free experience. But honestly, I did not miss anything. The food was out of this world. Every single meal was beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and incredibly satisfying - and totally planned for my detox programme. It completely changed my perception of what this kind of diet can be. A very special mention must go to Juna, my butler during my stay. At first, having a personal butler felt like an unnecessary luxury, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Juna made my entire experience seamless. He checked in on me every day, ensured everything ran smoothly, and most importantly, made me feel safe, comfortable, and truly welcome as a solo traveller. His kindness and attention to detail were exceptional. To the wellness consultants, the spa team, the yoga instructors, the restaurant staff, housekeeping, and everyone behind the scenes - thank you. You created an environment where I could truly switch off, reflect, and begin to rebuild myself. I arrived feeling exhausted and a little lost. I left feeling calm, grounded, healthy, and genuinely happy. If you are even slightly considering this retreat, especially if, like me, it feels a little outside your comfort zone, take the leap. It might just change your life - give yourself the permission to put yourself first."

"We had such a perfect and magical time at Gdas! We did the 3 day mind balance program. The activities were well spaced out to allow lots of time to relax in our private pool villa. We had a variety of healthy vegan meals and beverages planned for us, and the spa, yoga and meditation services were so peaceful and thoughtfully executed. All of the staff were so friendly and attentive, especially our personal butler / VIP host, Juna. He went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of and had a great time. We hope to come back in the future and recommend all of our friends and family to check it out! :)"

"My stay at Gdas Health and Wellness Resort was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by a sense of calm, beauty, and genuine care that made the entire experience unforgettable. The resort itself is absolutely stunning. So peaceful, immaculately maintained, and thoughtfully designed to nurture both body and mind. Tangi restaurant is an attraction on its own. The food was incredible and across our 6 day stay, we never ran out of options. The staff in the restaurant were wonderful and always remembered us and our food preferences. They are attentive around the pool as well, bringing us water and sunscreen as soon as we settled into our pool loungers. As vegans, it was so nice to be able to order anything off the menu without compromise. We were so impressed at every single option. What truly sets this place apart, however, is the exceptional staff. A special and heartfelt thank you to Indah and Agung, who went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable. Their warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail were remarkable. Indah’s kindness and welcoming energy made me feel instantly at home, while Arung’s attentiveness and dedication ensured that every aspect of my stay was seamless and enjoyable. They both went out of their way to accomodate our requests for activities and even facilitated them for us. We learned to make traditional hats and offerings. Our temple visit was truly so special and appreciated. My husband became ill the morning before we arrived at Gdas and Indah made a special trip before arriving at work to buy and bring us fresh coconuts. Indah and Agung then opened them for us and left the fresh juice in our villa fridge. We extended our stay as my husband couldn’t travel and are so glad we did. The hotel organised a doctor for us and my husband was better a few days later. Every staff member i encountered asked about my husbands condition. We felt truly cared for and it meant so much. It was also my husbands birthday while we stayed at Gdas and all of the staff wished him Happy birthday and also sung happy birthday with a beautifully plated cake. Agung made up our room with flowers and decorative pieces. He was also gifted a beautiful framed piece of art from Indah and Agung. Every program, meal, and service reflected a deep commitment to wellness and guest satisfaction. The included activities and wellness classes really made this stay worth the price. It’s a real experiential stay. Sadly we are leaving today but feeling refreshed, recharged, and genuinely cared for. I cannot recommend Gdas Health and Wellness Resort highly enough—it’s a true sanctuary, made even more special by incredible people like Indah and Agung."
