PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a limestone ridge on Bali's Bukit Peninsula, where the land rises sharply before the cliffs drop toward the Indian Ocean, Hidden Hills Villas arranges its pavilions in the manner of a Balinese hillside village — each structure claiming its own terrace, its own pool, its own sightline through the jungle canopy to the sea beyond. The aerial view confirms what the concept promises: traditional alang-alang and dark timber rooflines dispersed among dense tropical planting, the compound feeling discovered rather than constructed. Inside the villas, the approach balances vernacular warmth against a cleaner contemporary sensibility. Dark ironwood floors run beneath canopied four-poster beds dressed in white linen, their gossamer curtains caught in the cross-breeze that moves through fully retractable timber-framed doors. One bedroom carries an ochre-washed ceiling and bold Balinese painting above the headboard, grounding the space in island craft without tipping into pastiche; another strips the palette back entirely to white, with a teak butterfly chair as the sole accent. The communal areas shift register toward something more polished — the Hidden Gem bar and restaurant features tactile white-stacked limestone cladding, woven-rattan bar stools on teak frames, and a louvred ceiling that mediates between interior and open air. At dusk, the infinity pool terrace, strung with warm filament lights and furnished in blush-cushioned wicker, draws the two halves of the property together in a register that is entirely, self-assuredly Uluwatu.

"A stay at Hidden Hills is a serene and genuine luxury experience. The check-in process is warm and personal, followed by an attentive and detailed escort to Villa Santorini by Risma. This spacious, artistic, and elegant villa is surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens with Balinese gates. The living room and bedroom open directly to the ocean and sunset, creating a captivating sense of privacy. Equipped with a private pool, spacious outdoor bathroom, and luxurious amenities, the entire experience truly reflects five-star standards. Evening turndown service completes the experience, and Wahdan’s warm check-out process concludes the experience with a lasting impression. Thank you, Hidden Hills Team, for a luxury that is not just visible, but also tangible."

"A truly stunning experience from start to finish. The vibe at Hidden Hills Villa is incredibly relaxing, making it the perfect place to unwind. The food was absolutely delicious, and the overall atmosphere felt very thoughtful and well curated. A special thank you to Risma, Wira and Jastin — they were super helpful, attentive, and genuinely made my stay even more enjoyable. The wine lounge is a real highlight, with a huge selection that wine lovers will really appreciate. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful, elevated escape in Bali."

"We stayed here as Hilton Honors Diamond members, expecting a smooth experience given this property’s SLH affiliation, but unfortunately the stay fell well below expectations. At check-in, we were told no room upgrade was available, despite higher-category rooms being openly available for booking on the hotel’s website at the same time. As Diamond members, we expected at least transparency around upgrade eligibility. The most concerning issue was room cleanliness and service response. Upon entering our room, we found a large spider. Instead of offering an immediate room change, staff sprayed insecticide directly on the bedding, which was unacceptable. Bedding was only changed after we specifically requested it. While waiting, we noticed another spider inside our bag, which we believe came from the room as the bag had been placed on one of the chairs. Again, there was no proactive offer to change rooms, we had to request it ourselves and the entire process took about 30 minutes. We had no choice but to wait. Unfortunately, the cleanliness issue extended to breakfast as well. While the breakfast quality itself was good, we found an insect in our soto ayam during breakfast, which was very disappointing and further raised concerns about hygiene standards. We understand Bali is a tropical destination, but insects inside the room, chemical spray on bedding, and insects found in food combined with a lack of initiative, are not acceptable at this level. What stood out most was not the insects themselves, but the lack of proactive service, empathy, and problem-solving expected from a luxury SLH property. This could have been a good stay, but after experiencing these issues, it was difficult for us to feel comfortable for the remainder of our time at the property. While the hotel has potential, service consistency, cleanliness standards, and elite guest recognition need serious improvement."

"I’ve waited a few days before posting this, to try to be fair and not unfairly critical. I am sympathetic to any business that finds a neighbour’s construction project has a negative impact on their own. It isn’t Hidden Hills’ fault that Uluwatu is so much busier than other stops on our Bali tour. It is incredibly sad that your primary selling points - “180 degree views” and implied peace and tranquility of a genuine 5 star experience of a SLHW establishment - are significantly if not entirely obliterated (hopefully temporarily) by this work. But….at some point you should accept that your offering is not what it was, amend your offering (I suggest slashing the price on the villas most affected) and be truthful about it. Your disclosure post-booking that there is some construction in the area does not provide you with carte blanche to behave as you have-to continue to intentionally mislead and sell a product that does not currently exist. The staff are absolutely charming and without exception lovely., and this low rating is not on them. But….overall one senses they must know that they are disappointing some guests with something out of their control. As a result I think standards are slipping in service in small ways but still noticeable. Tables going unwiped in the bar between guests, drinks served without napkin (when a large slice of dragon fruit is precariously perched on a cocktail glass, absolutely necessary to protect clothes), those very welcome cold refreshing towels being warm, not being shown the room well (couldn’t find the safe, which was flaky in operation) or the hidden light switches, didn’t get the key…). All minor but cumulative, and having spent the previous 10 days in hotels half the price with exceptional service as standard, they are noticeable. And this in itself is oversold-it is not ‘butler service’ as I understand it (e.g. offering to unpack). Very attentive yes-but it is nothing more than room service. And you are encouraged by being made to sign for this room service to leave a tip, instead of this being part of the offering and adding pressure to each and every interaction. This is unique in my experience in other 5 star hotels in Bali but room service is not. Perhaps it is that standards locally have increased across the board and the competition is now such that this is not a standout. That is why such seemingly petty niggles jar. The owners/management should be aware that this ‘USP’ is no longer unique, and should reflect or adapt if they wish to retain their premium. You mention in a response to a review here that the construction work has completed (Aug25). This is NOT TRUE. See pics of what is sold versus the reality. It might be possible to keep Villa Santorini in use (and perhaps others at the bottom of the resort) if you were honest and sold it as luxury with temporary issues/experience our luxury resort at a fraction of the price whilst work is going on, that might be workable for some, and spare your previously excellent reputation….but you choose to let the staff deal with what must be a stream of extremely disappointed guests. It implies a contempt of both your guests and your staff. I routinely stay in budget places where I have the choice and I expect the experience to reflect that, and happily adjust my expectations accordingly. You charge literally double and deliver an insult. We could not leave. We were in the last 2 nights of our holiday, staying with you to relax and recover from touring. We only booked with you because another hotel was honest and told us our booked room was now not available (your approach would seemingly be to not inform us and downgrade us on arrival). One of us was unwell the day of arrival, and we had no reserves to face another change. But I have never been so tempted to leave. We found no peace. Worst of all, 50% of the view was gone, replaced by the black expanse of a multi storey building behind black screening, plus the noise which you did mention might be present, but that was much more ubiquitous than suggested. But the eyesore… To spend the day in the literal shadow of this, well-it might as well have had written on it in large letters ‘YES! We are taking the piss out of you. Ha ha!’. THAT was what was most distressing. We sent a detailed email to a previously immediately responsive email address, your main one. I acknowledged there probably wasn’t much you could do but I wanted to give you an opportunity to do….something. To indicate that we weren’t being treated as fools. It went unanswered for 12 hours from 7am till 7pm. When answered (no doubt only because by then you had something to offer), we were offered another villa, which admittedly was far less affected. It was already dark, and the benefit we could have had was pretty much lost. We were out for the evening till 10pm, but we agreed to the disruption and move, for our last night and up till checkout next day, even though our last proper day had been ruined. Your solution didn’t cost you anything (you were using a room that was free, and even at this point it was strongly suggested, with locked doors, that we shouldn’t touch the 2nd bedroom and that because I had specifically requested Villa Santorini (for sentimental reasons) that it was a shame I hadn’t liked it. Both were no doubt a member of staff, who I repeat was absolutely lovely, being either embarrassed by the position they were put in or completely deluded as to how both were further insults and taking us for fools. We are extremely considerate to staff and wouldn’t have dreamt of using the 2nd bedroom without need-but to be reminded not to cause a bit of extra ‘inconvenience’ in such circumstance where we had to pack and move at 10pm….? And the idea that if they had mentioned that Santorini was not as advertised to such an extent I would still have chosen it? Come on! We are as far from precious princesses (demanding refunds for nothing, discourteous to staff and expecting them to tend to our every demand) as is possible to be. Honestly. But this place was trying to gaslight us as if everything was wonderful and how could our disappointment be anything but unreasonable. DOUBLE THE COST! Not even the one bottle of wine we had (the cheapest in the mini bar) was removed from our bill. I hate it when in reviews people whinge about not getting a refund. But really, this is appalling. We were sold a Bentley, then given a bicycle and expected to be grateful for it, and pay for the ribbons we put on the handlebars to try and make the best of a bad situation. I assume management have seen my email expressing my disappointment, and they have not reached out. The staff member told me that photos would be updated on the website. Not yet they haven’t and the silence convinces me that they won’t. So submitting a negative review is all I can do, and I think this is my first-generally if I can’t say something nice I don’t say it at all. The final insult is being made to behave in a way contrary to character because there is little other option, and no one else should have a holiday of a lifetime messed up by wilful dishonesty. The owners/management are putting their head in the sand about this issue instead of dealing with it. I can’t comment on the restaurant or spa as we didn’t use them. The breakfast was plentiful and good but i do wish hotels would stop putting vinegar in the water to preserve poached eggs-rendered inedible."
