PB hotel design editorial

Collision is the operative word at La Réserve 1785 — a Canggu property that sets Balinese vernacular architecture in deliberate conversation with European decorative excess. Where most of the island's luxury hotels reach for a kind of reverent minimalism, this one hangs a large gilt-framed Baroque ceiling painting beneath hand-hewn timber trusses, surrounds it with crystal chandelier drops and veined Indian granite columns, and treats the juxtaposition not as contradiction but as curatorial intent. The reception pavilion's checkerboard floor inlaid with terracotta-toned stone bands anchors the visual drama, while the gardens beyond are laid out with the clipped formality of plumeria allées and reflecting pools edged in dark volcanic paras stone — the black split-gate candi bentar at the garden boundary a genuine gesture toward Balinese sacred architecture rather than resort pastiche. Guest pavilions shelter under steeply pitched alang-alang and timber roofs, the interiors furnished with white mosquito-canopied four-poster beds on wide-plank hardwood floors, geometric kilim runners, and a mix of brass task lighting and faceted crystal pendants that keeps the rooms from tipping into either pure tropicalia or studied European eclecticism. The restaurant pavilion, open on three sides to the pool and gardens, is structured around a traditional meru-derived octagonal roof with woven rattan pendant lights layered at different heights — simple enough framing for a dining room that lets the surrounding garden do the atmospheric work.

"There are hotels that are business-oriented, and others that feel more like a home away from home. La Réserve belongs to the second category. It’s a boutique hotel focused on guests’ needs, and they truly do their best to make you feel at home. The staff are flexible, open, and warm. The place is quiet and, if you’re lucky not to have any construction nearby, it feels like a peaceful oasis in the middle of noisy Canggu. The hotel is a beautiful combination of French and Balinese design, very cozy. There are plenty of coffee places around. There are also many extra benefits: • Breakfast is served at any time you like. • You can order almost anything. • They offer buggy service directly to the beach, and they can also take you to nearby places — coffee shops, restaurants — I even went shopping by buggy 😃 • The staff is incredibly kind and relaxed. • The manager takes time to talk with guests. He has a very positive attitude and is open and generous. For example, when I mentioned I had guests coming for dinner, he offered a bottle of champagne for free. He is also passionate about history, so you can have great conversations about Balinese culture and your own culture. • We were offered a free massage and other treats during our one-week stay. • The spa offers massages by talented Balinese therapists. I especially enjoyed the classic massage. Thank you very much — I’m so happy I chose this hotel in Canggu!"

"I had an absolutely fantastic stay at this adults-only hotel! The pool area was a true highlight, offering a tranquil and luxurious experience, while the service was impeccable, everyone was so attentive and kind, making me feel right at home. The room was stylish but also very comfortable, and the breakfast each morning was a delightful treat, with a great variety and top-quality options. Overall, it was a perfect getaway that left no wishes unfulfilled!"

"The service level at La Reserve is above and beyond as what we have grown accustomed to, travelling 5 star hotels across the globe. The staff tries to anticipate your every need even before you realise something is a great idea. Its a small premises and as such romantic and secluded. It has an adults only policy and that adds to the serenity and quiteness of the place. Our room, La Chambre de Laure which included a plunge pool just outside next to the inside shower, only separated by a glass door. Great for a refreshed and cool lounge. It is very clean and very quiet. We will visit again."
