PB hotel design editorial

Collision is the operative word at La Réserve 1785 — a Canggu property that sets Balinese vernacular architecture in deliberate conversation with European decorative excess. Where most of the island's luxury hotels reach for a kind of reverent minimalism, this one hangs a large gilt-framed Baroque ceiling painting beneath hand-hewn timber trusses, surrounds it with crystal chandelier drops and veined Indian granite columns, and treats the juxtaposition not as contradiction but as curatorial intent. The reception pavilion's checkerboard floor inlaid with terracotta-toned stone bands anchors the visual drama, while the gardens beyond are laid out with the clipped formality of plumeria allées and reflecting pools edged in dark volcanic paras stone — the black split-gate candi bentar at the garden boundary a genuine gesture toward Balinese sacred architecture rather than resort pastiche. Guest pavilions shelter under steeply pitched alang-alang and timber roofs, the interiors furnished with white mosquito-canopied four-poster beds on wide-plank hardwood floors, geometric kilim runners, and a mix of brass task lighting and faceted crystal pendants that keeps the rooms from tipping into either pure tropicalia or studied European eclecticism. The restaurant pavilion, open on three sides to the pool and gardens, is structured around a traditional meru-derived octagonal roof with woven rattan pendant lights layered at different heights — simple enough framing for a dining room that lets the surrounding garden do the atmospheric work.

"It was an absolute pleasure to experience the beautiful and magical sanctuary in Bali. Everything has been curated to perfection, and all the little personal touches certainly did not go unnoticed. The team were so attentive and attention to detail at each touch point and personalised service was incredible. The breakfast menu and quality of the food were excellent, and all the thoughtful touches ~ from the buggy service, mosquito plug and spray, portable chargers and afternoon tea, consistently went beyond expectations. The concierge on the tablet, Marshall speakers connected to Spotify, and gym access at Rite really complete the experience. It is a true 360-degree offering No surprise it belongs to SLH group - the artwork and decor is extremely tasteful. I particularly loved the French music playing in the background throughout the day… Highly recommend for a romantic getaway!!"

"We have just spent an amazing week at this hotel and all agreed it’s one of the very best we have had the fortune to experience. From the beautiful setting, pristine rooms and outstanding hospitality we will certainly return. Next stop is Four Season Ubud and they have big boots to fill! My only suggestion would be a full length mirror in the rooms but that’s it!"

"La Reserve 1785 is in a great secluded location, very quiet and relaxing. The staff were all amazing and made us feel part of their family throughout our stay. They went out of their way to make sure everything was to our liking and always added a bit extra for us. Communication was very responsive and efficient, from setting things up before we arrived in Bali, throughout our stay and after checkout."
