PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a hillside above the Ayung River valley on the outskirts of Ubud, where terraced rice paddies step down toward dense jungle and the air carries the particular quality of altitude and moisture that defines Bali's interior, Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve opened in 2015 across a 16-hectare site designed to evoke a traditional Balinese village compound. The architecture, shaped around the concept of a sacred riverside sanctuary, draws on the vernacular vocabulary of thatched alang-alang roofs, deep timber eaves, and carved stone shrines distributed across the grounds as functional spiritual markers rather than decorative gesture. Sixty rooms and villas are arranged in low clusters that defer to the landscape, the massing deliberately fragmented to preserve sight lines across the paddies visible in the exterior dusk image. The interiors establish a material language of dark-stained teak wall panelling, honed limestone flooring, and woven rattan ceiling insets — a palette warm enough to feel residential without borrowing too heavily from the Aman-adjacent idiom that dominates this altitude. Pendant lanterns in blown glass hang above beds dressed with ikat runners, hand-carved Balinese sculpture grounds the suites in local craft tradition, and freestanding soaking tubs in dark composite stone address the open-plan bath areas with quiet confidence. The river-facing restaurant, structured beneath a lacquered timber pergola with woven bamboo infill panels and rattan-backed chairs, dissolves any boundary between dining room and forest canopy — the Ayung below, the jungle directly at eye level.

Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve Reviews

"The hotel itself is beautiful. Grounds are luscious and green. Buildings and facilities are first class. However, compared to other hotels we visited in Bali, the staff are a big let down. After experiencing a wonderful butler service at The Legian, Seminyak, the butler service at this hotel was disappointing. Booking restaurants at the property was challenging with restaurants fully booked and I overheard other guests having similar experiences. If you meet similar challenges, try the Aperitif Restaurant at the Viceroy Hotel, you won’t be disappointed. When we checked in to the hotel we were told we should have booked restaurants before our arrival. I don’t find that to be an acceptable response. Kubu restaurant is poor. Compared to other A La Carte restaurants nearby, it does not measure up. The hotel website sets an expectation of culinary innovation, in reality this is sadly absent. One of our party had dined at this restaurant a few years ago and they were disappointed as the restaurant wasn’t nearly as good as it once was. Sawah was OK, just OK. Ambar was good. However avoid the sushi roll wrapped in seaweed, the seaweed sheet used is too thick and tough to eat. They did make sushi without seaweed wrap on our last night and that was perfectly enjoyable. Given the price of this hotel, the management team really need to try a lot harder and realise the customer comes first. The staff have to be much more flexible in accommodating guests dining requests. I certainly wouldn’t book this hotel again. Final point, do your own research on trips and make your own plans. The arrangements made by the hotel did not showcase the true beauty and nature on offer in Ubud."

"Our stay at Mandapa was truly exceptional and one of the most memorable resort experiences we've had. The property is absolutely breathtaking, surrounded by lush greenery and the Ayung River, creating a peaceful and luxurious retreat. Every detail reflects genuine Balinese hospitality. A special thank you to the incredible team at Sawah Terrace, who made every meal feel warm and welcoming. Their attentive service, kindness, and genuine care really stood out and made our dining experience unforgettable. We also appreciated the thoughtfulness of the Patih, who noticed that I had a cough and kindly offered to prepare a warm herbal drink. Although it was unfortunately forgotten, the gesture itself was sincerely appreciated and reflected the team's caring attitude."

"I would rate this hotel 4 out of 5 stars. Overall, this is a very good hotel. The facilities are beautiful, the rooms are spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed, and the entire property is very attractive. What really stands out is the staff—they are exceptional. Everyone, from the restaurant team to the bar and pool staff, is incredibly friendly, attentive, and professional, making the stay truly enjoyable. However, there are a few aspects that kept it from being a perfect experience. The main building, where the guest rooms are located, feels a bit generic and lacks personality compared to the rest of the property. The pool area is also quite crowded with children, which makes it noisy and takes away from the peaceful atmosphere that this kind of resort is expected to offer. Finally, while the yoga and meditation space overlooks the river, it is essentially an enclosed room that feels more like a classroom than a wellness sanctuary. Given the beautiful natural surroundings, these activities would be much more enjoyable if they were held outdoors, allowing guests to better connect with nature. Despite these points, I had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend this hotel."

"Although I wasn’t staying at the resort, I visited Ambar for lunch, and the experience completely exceeded my expectations. The setting is simply breathtaking, overlooking the lush valley with a peaceful atmosphere that is difficult to describe. The Japanese food was outstanding, beautifully presented, fresh, and full of flavor. What impressed me even more was the hospitality. As a Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite member, the team surprised us by offering our coffee, espresso, juice, and water as a thoughtful courtesy. It was a small gesture, but it perfectly reflected the genuine warmth and generosity of the team. A special thank you to Agung for his kindness and excellent service. His professionalism and hospitality made our visit even more memorable. Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the riverside because it was fully occupied, but the team handled the situation with courtesy and made us feel truly welcomed. Mandapa is more than just a beautiful resort—it delivers an exceptional guest experience. I will definitely return, this time as a hotel guest."

"We came to Mandapa for a two-night stay after Amankila, and it exceeded our expectations. The service was exceptional from start to finish. Our butler, Nessa, was always available, incredibly attentive, and seemed to anticipate our every need before we even asked. She is truly an asset to the hotel. I rarely write reviews, but this hotel deserves the recognition it deserves. From check-in to check-out, the entire team made us feel genuinely cared for. The level of hospitality, attention to detail, and personalized service was outstanding. Having just come from Amankila, we can honestly say that Mandapa is absolutely on par with the Aman resorts in Bali when it comes to service. We would not hesitate to return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly luxurious and memorable stay."
