PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against a stretch of black-sand beach in Tabanan Regency, where Bali's volcanic coastline runs wilder and less visited than the tourist corridors to the south, Soori Bali was conceived by New York-based architect Soo K. Chan of SCDA as a study in disciplined restraint against a landscape that could easily overwhelm it. Chan arranged the property's 48 villas — each with its own private pool — in a low-slung linear formation that tracks the shoreline, their dark-framed pavilion roofs and pale limestone floors maintaining a horizontal discipline that keeps the Indian Ocean perpetually in frame rather than treating it as a backdrop. The interiors carry the same considered economy: ebonised timber structural columns, canopy bed frames in blackened wood set against softly upholstered linen headboards, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels that dissolve the boundary between bedroom and terrace. Woven sisal rugs, cylindrical stone side tables, and low-profile lounge chairs upholstered in warm grey anchor the rooms without competing with the tropical light flooding through them. Outside, carved volcanic stone bowls float at pool level — a material note that anchors the property to Balinese craft tradition without resorting to pastiche. The beach bar, visible in the images with its fine timber-louvred canopy open to the prevailing breeze, extends the same structural language into the landscape: precision joinery, warm pendant lighting, and an unobstructed view of the reef-edged horizon.

About

Set on the edge of the ocean between the Batu Karu Mountain and terraced rice fields, Soori Bali is a hidden refuge, rejuvenating and peaceful; it is Bali as it should be. Designed, owned and operated by renowned architect Soo K. Chan and his wife Ling Fu, the resort prioritises environmental and cultural sustainability. Crafted out of local materials, Soori Bali maintains a true sense of place. Keeping things pure, its restaurants use fresh produce from nearby farms and spices from its own garden; the resort’s spa uses only the highest quality organic products. All 48 of Soori Bali’s villas feature private pools with sweeping vistas. Within easy reach of the legendary Tanah Lot and an 18-hole championship golf course, the resort is perfect for those seeking spiritual and recreational delights. There are few places that revere nature’s gifts like we do, and absolute discretion for our guests is the pattern of our craft. Soori Bali is an amazing place to be, naturally.

"We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Soori in September 2024. It was a perfect place to start our Indonesia holiday! From the airport transfer experience to the time we checked out, the service was exceptional. The staff always greeted us by name and seemed eager to please. Our villa was spacious, comfortable and a great place to relax to the sights and sounds of the ocean. The ‘tasting breakfast’ concept was a real treat, and we enjoyed the meals we had at Cotta also. During our short stay, two small weddings took place and there didn’t seem to be many non-wedding guests around so the resort was generally pretty quiet. This suited us just fine although it did mean there wasn’t much atmosphere in the restaurant/bar in the evenings, however we did benefit from the wedding fireworks displays! The little gym and the spa were both lovely. Other activities included making a visit to Tanah Lot temple one morning; someone from the hotel drove us there and walked us round the complex, which was a great experience. We would happily return some day."

"Just checked out of the most beautiful stay at Soori Bali. This is a truly special piece of earth, with stunningly designed villas and public spaces—but what makes it unforgettable is its people and soul. Bali has no shortage of beautiful hotels, but if you’re looking for an out-of-this-world experience (think volcanic cliffs and a dramatic black sand beach), nothing compares to Soori. From the moment you check in, you feel like you’ve stepped into heaven—welcomed with a delicious drink and a warm smile. The food is exceptional. We enjoyed dinner at Cotta, the Indonesian restaurant, and at Keiyo, the newly opened Japanese teppanyaki counter—both were outstanding. I also loved their sharing-plates breakfast concept, which lets you taste a variety of dishes without the guilt of over-ordering. Congratulations to Mr. Chan for conceptualizing such a beautiful resort. I can’t wait to see what he creates next in Penang and Niseko, and for assembling such a wonderful team. Special thanks to Dian for helping us plan our stay, to Haryono (Front Desk Manager) and Hangki (Resort Manager) for ensuring everything was perfect, and to our butlers Zarafa and Benny for looking after us so well. Already counting the days until I’m back."
