PB hotel design editorial

Directly above Seminyak Beach, where the Indian Ocean arrives with enough force to discourage casual swimming, a low-rise compound of thatched pavilions and alang-alang rooflines has held its position since 1997 as the definitive argument for Balinese resort architecture at its most considered. The Legian Seminyak Bali was conceived by Singapore-based architect Kerry Hill, whose approach here — as at Amanjiwo and his later work across Asia — treated traditional Balinese construction not as decorative motif but as structural logic. Steep pitched roofs in hand-cut thatch, dark tropical timber columns, and carved stone detailing are deployed with a restraint that keeps the compound feeling more like a private estate than a hotel. The property holds just 67 suites across three floors, a room count that allows the landscape — lily ponds, coconut palms, volcanic stone pathways — to dominate the experience rather than yield to it. The interiors calibrate the same tension between local craft and contemporary ease. Bedroom pavilions are lined in warm teak panelling, their octagonal ceilings backlit to emphasise the geometry of the rafter structure, while upper-floor rooms in the main building feature herringbone timber floors and white linen four-poster canopies that soften the architecture without disguising it. The beach-facing bar sits beneath a great alang-alang canopy raised on dark timber posts above a reflective water feature, rattan bucket chairs arranged to face the surf line — a configuration that has barely needed updating in nearly three decades.

"We have been to the Legian at Seminyak (not to be be confused with the one at Legian Beach) a number of times and rate it very highly. Great location right on the beach with beautiful pools overlooking the ocean. Great breakfast with beautiful outlook Most importantly the staff are without exception brilliant - efficient, helpful and forever friendly. Exceptional place!"

"We recently stayed at The Legian in Seminyak, and it was truly a wonderful, unforgettable experience from start to finish. The property itself is beautiful, but it is the impeccable execution of the hospitality that sets this resort completely apart. The accommodations are amazing, and the architectural & interior design is brilliant - Our enormous studio room had a breathtaking sea-facing view. The 3-tier infinity pool was spectacular. And a special mention must go to the poolside bar and its staff: the drinks were fantastic, including absolutely the best Aperol Spritz I have tased since I was last in Italy. The breakfast was another major highlight, offering a fantastic balance of a premium a la carte menu alongside deliciously curated buffet. What truely makes The Legian world-class, however, is its team. Every single staff member we encountered was incredibly helpful, warm, and genuinely friendly. While the entire team was excellent, one individual stood out above all others for making our stay absolutely perfect: The Assistant Manager, Eka Rahayu. Eka's exceptional hospitality, attention to detail, and dedication to guest satisfaction ensured our stay was flawless. We can't wait to return."

"Amazing property, staff and guests’ experience. I stayed at their 2-bedroom suite which was amazing. What’s better than their rooms, was their service. Everyone around was kind and nice and tried to help. Now it’s pricey but they have some nice gestures like the snacks in the room (beverages, fruits, daily cakes and nuts). These get refilled daily as well. The staff were really amazing stepping out of their way to make my kids enjoy their stay."

"Beautiful location just in front of Seminyak beach. The hotel's main and only restaurant is great. I had breakfast, luch, and dinner there. Excellent taste and atmosphere. Strongly recomment to experience Legian Spa."
