PB hotel design editorial

When Peter Muller arrived on Bali's Seminyak shoreline in the early 1970s, the island had no template for luxury hospitality — so he invented one. Working from the bones of the Kayu Aya estate, the Australian architect transformed a private compound into The Oberoi Beach Resort, Bali, inaugurated in 1978 as the island's first five-star beachside property. Muller's central conviction was that a building should grow from its landscape rather than impose upon it: the 74 villas and lanai rooms spread across 15 acres of tropical gardens in a low-rise configuration of open-walled pavilions, their alang-alang thatched roofs pitched steeply in the manner of traditional Balinese architecture. Landscape designer Made Wijaya wove lotus ponds, river-stone walls, and dense plantings of traveller's palms and frangipani through the compound, so that moving between buildings feels less like walking a resort campus and more like passing through a series of temple gardens. The rooms carry the same logic indoors: teak four-poster beds with gauze canopies rise beneath hand-woven thatch ceilings, the structure itself doing the decorative work that other hotels delegate to furnishings. Rattan seating with ikat cushions in deep crimson and timber-framed sliding panels that fold the room open to private terraces complete the picture. In the bar pavilion, dark-stained timber columns support a soaring alang-alang canopy over terracotta tile floors, with carved stone deities placed at the open perimeter where the interior dissolves into garden. The pool deck, shaded by mature frangipani and dressed with fringed ceremonial umbrellas in yellow and indigo, holds the Indian Ocean firmly in view.

"We came to this hotel 15 years ago and it was superb and I’m delighted to say that it’s still equally superb! We only stayed two nights as we’re touring a few islands in Indonesia but we thoroughly enjoy our brief stay. We ate at the restaurant on the first night and had a delicious meal with exemplary service. We then had cocktails at the bar which were delicious and again first class service. The pool area is lovely, lots of comfortable sun loungers, great service and little touches such as face spritz, sun block, sorbet and so on are brought around. The gardens are immaculate as was our room and all public areas. Nothing out of place or in need or any updates. The staff were all so kind, friendly and helpful. I have nothing but praise for this stunning hotel. It is such a haven of tranquility when you return from an evening out which we were grateful for as Seminyak is much busier and touristy than it was 15 years ago."

"It’s a beautiful hotel. I can hardly believe it’s over 40 years old and has never undergone a major renovation. Some may consider it dated, but I think the upkeep has been exceptional. I arrived with relatively modest expectations, having just stayed at Apurva Kempinski and Anantara Ubud before ending my Bali trip at Oberoi. However, this property pleasantly surprised me. The grounds are stunning and impeccably maintained. The à la carte breakfast is genuinely good, with plenty of options, especially for guests who enjoy Indian cuisine. Our dinner at Kura Kura Restaurant was also excellent, with beautiful ambience, attentive service, and delicious food. The beach is directly in front of the hotel, making it incredibly convenient and accessible. The pool is simple but enjoyable and even seemed temperature-controlled. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, but what truly stands out here is the service. From the reception team to the breakfast, dinner, and poolside staff, everyone was warm, friendly, and professional. The attention to detail from housekeeping was equally impressive. I hold memberships with GHA, Marriott, IHG, and several other hotel loyalty programmes, yet I arrived at Oberoi not expecting any special treatment as I am not a top-tier member. The fact that they proactively offered me a late checkout, something that even elite members at some other hotel chains may not always receive, was a genuinely thoughtful gesture. Over the course of our stay, this hotel really grew on us. While it may not offer as many activities for children as some larger resorts, its beachfront location, proximity to the local market, and outstanding service create a luxurious, relaxed, and authentically Balinese atmosphere. I would absolutely recommend Oberoi Bali. It has become one of my favourite hotels in Bali and is easily one of the better luxury options on the island. I’m writing this review before checking out because I feel the team deserves the recognition. If I wait until I leave, I might never get around to posting it—and they certainly deserve the praise."
