PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a clifftop above the Indian Ocean in Nusa Dua, where the land drops sharply toward the surf, the design brief for The Ritz-Carlton Bali asked a pointed question: how do you build a resort that references Balinese architectural tradition without lapsing into pastiche? The answer, spread across 68 pool villas and suites set within lushly planted grounds, lies in structural sincerity. The porte-cochère announces the approach clearly — a broad, hipped roof with a finial apex carried on paired stone columns, the silhouette drawn directly from traditional Balinese pavilion forms but rendered at resort scale without apology. The interiors calibrate a similar tension, moving between two registers depending on the accommodation type. In the hotel rooms, dark-stained timber four-poster frames against white-plastered walls give way to sliding glass panels and private plunge pools surrounded by tropical planting — heliconia and banana leaf pressing close enough to feel genuinely immersive. The villa category goes further still, with soaring exposed timber roof trusses, woven ceiling panels, and mosaic-topped side tables that reference local craft traditions. The clifftop bar delivers the property's most arresting spatial moment: floor-to-ceiling pivot-hinged glazed panels fold entirely open toward the ocean, a polished stone-striped floor reflecting the last of the evening light back toward upholstered lounge chairs in cream and dark chocolate — the effect closer to an elevated private residence than a conventional hotel bar.

"This was my second visit to Bali, the first being 12 years ago, and I had been really looking forward to a simple, relaxed, and meaningful return. Unfortunately, the arrival experience was disappointing. The Front Office team was occupied with other guests, and I was left waiting until a butler kindly stepped in to assist. I appreciated his help, but as check-in was not his forte, the process was limited to passport verification, payment, and handing over the keys, with no intro to the property or overview of the resort and its facilities. When I later shared this feedback with the front office, the response felt defensive. I was asked whether I had received the welcome towel and drink. I did receive the towel, though I do not drink alcohol or beverages that are sweet. When I mentioned this was my first time back in Bali in 12 years and that I had hoped for a quiet and meaningful visit - my previous stay at the W Seminyak and the Mulia Villas - the response I received from the front office team and duty manager, Ivan, felt dubious and I was encouraged to provide proof. I did, but I found that quite uncomfortable. Personal comments shared in good faith should not be questioned or need to be verified in that way. There was also an issue with the shower hot water. The shower controls appeared defective, with the hot side producing cold water and the cold side producing somewhat warm water. The separate tub area had closer to normal hot water, which suggested the issue may be related to the shower controls, but it still took until after 10:30 pm to sort through. The room itself was okay but felt dated. As an Ambassador I was upgraded from a Junior Suite to a standard one-bedroom suite, it did not feel refined or upscale, and the wood finishes and furnishings appeared tired, with several noticeable patches on the walls and ceilings. All in all, this stay has been underwhelming, and I regret choosing this hotel, especially given how rarely I am able to visit Bali from the U.S. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this Ritz-Carlton. The overall experience has been very disappointing."

"Our stay at The Ritz-Carlton was nothing short of exceptional. We booked a private beach dinner at The Beach Grill, and it was truly a highlight—the ambiance was romantic, and every dish was absolutely delicious. To make it even better, we applied Marriott NUA and were fortunate to be upgraded to a stunning Sky Villa for two nights, which elevated the entire experience to another level of luxury and comfort. A special thanks to our butler, Kenji, who delivered truly 5-star service throughout our stay. He went above and beyond to accommodate all our requests and played a key role in helping me prepare a surprise proposal for my girlfriend. His attention to detail and genuine care made the moment unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect stay."

"Our second time visiting this lovely property and we are celebrating our babymoon. Mira (front office manager) and the team have done a lot to make our stay pleasant and memorable. They have checked with me the time arrival in advance so that everything was smooth and hassle free. Most impressive is - Mira had taken all our preference from last stay even tiny little details and she prepared a lot of surprises for us. Those preference we don’t even remember any more. It leaves us no reason not to come to this property again for our next Bali trip. Thanks for the team and specially Mira’s heartwarming preparations. She has done an excellent job and treating all guests straight from her heart."
