PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a clifftop above the Indian Ocean in Nusa Dua, where the land drops sharply toward the surf, the design brief for The Ritz-Carlton Bali asked a pointed question: how do you build a resort that references Balinese architectural tradition without lapsing into pastiche? The answer, spread across 68 pool villas and suites set within lushly planted grounds, lies in structural sincerity. The porte-cochère announces the approach clearly — a broad, hipped roof with a finial apex carried on paired stone columns, the silhouette drawn directly from traditional Balinese pavilion forms but rendered at resort scale without apology. The interiors calibrate a similar tension, moving between two registers depending on the accommodation type. In the hotel rooms, dark-stained timber four-poster frames against white-plastered walls give way to sliding glass panels and private plunge pools surrounded by tropical planting — heliconia and banana leaf pressing close enough to feel genuinely immersive. The villa category goes further still, with soaring exposed timber roof trusses, woven ceiling panels, and mosaic-topped side tables that reference local craft traditions. The clifftop bar delivers the property's most arresting spatial moment: floor-to-ceiling pivot-hinged glazed panels fold entirely open toward the ocean, a polished stone-striped floor reflecting the last of the evening light back toward upholstered lounge chairs in cream and dark chocolate — the effect closer to an elevated private residence than a conventional hotel bar.

"This is my second visit to Bali. I had been on a work trip in Singapore and decided to stop in Bali before heading on to a conference, and I’m very glad I did. The resort itself is expansive and impressive, with a wide range of room and villa types spread across a beautifully landscaped property. The scale of the resort, the ocean views, and the overall setting still make a strong impression. The current Ritz-Carlton Bali opened in early 2015, and the property still feels ambitious in both layout and design. I will say the arrival experience was somewhat mixed at first, as the original room had not yet been refreshed and presented a few issues. That said, what matters just as much is how a property responds, and in that respect the hotel’s senior leadership was sincere, thoughtful, and very hands-on. I especially want to recognize Director of Rooms Mr. Sukadana and GM Mr. Kondo, both of whom dedicated their personal time and attention to making things right. Their assistance felt genuine and made a real difference in the overall stay. Once settled, the experience became a very enjoyable one. The villa I was moved to was truly wonderful. It was spacious, peaceful, and beautifully laid out, with a long private pool in a lush tropical setting that honestly felt even more generous than my pool back home in California. The indoor and outdoor flow of the villa was especially well done, and it made the rest of the stay feel relaxing and restorative. Dining at The Beach Grill was also a highlight. The setting is beautiful, the seafood was fresh, and the service was attentive without being overdone. I would especially like to thank Chef Kajong and Restaurant Manager Putu, along with the entire restaurant team, for making the dining experience feel warm, polished, and memorable throughout. Overall, this ended up being another very strong stay at The Ritz-Carlton. What stayed with me most was not just the scale of the resort or the beauty of the villa, but the fact that the senior team took the time to step in personally and ensure the stay became an enjoyable and memorable one."

"This resorts delivers without the razzmatazz of its massive newer neighbour the Apurva Kempinski where we recently stayed for five nights as well. As Bonvoy members with the Status of Lifetime Titanium Elite , our preference is generally Marriott brands in Bali and had another most enjoyable fourth stay in May. My motivation however for writing this review is to address the confusion online as to the status of the Club Lounge which is not to be confused with the Bar and lounge accessible by all guests. The actual former and small club lounge, which only seated 30 guests, is 100% definitely closed and has been since 2020. The facility is now only used for private events."

"We had such a wonderful stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Bali, and we’ll never forget the smiles and warmth of everyone there. We were visiting to celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, and the resort team truly treated us like family from the moment we set foot on the property. As a Bonvoy Platinum member booking through Amex FHR, I’ve stayed at many nice places, but the care we felt here was on another level. They moved my parents' suite into a breathtaking Sky Villa (Bonvoy nightly upgrade awards used) and arranged a two-bedroom lagoon-access suite for the rest of us so we could all be together in the same building. The true heart of our experience was our dedicated concierge/butler team, led by Kenji and his intern, Ariestya. Their attention to detail was incredible. A few days before our arrival, they asked me for a photo of my parents, and seeing it framed in their room, surrounded by beautiful decorations, was truly heartwarming. Even when things went wrong, the staff was there for us. My mother lost her earring my father had given her when they were young—a piece she’s cherished for decades. The housekeeping team searched tirelessly until they found it the next day. My mom was so relieved and grateful for their kindness and diligence. On our final day, Kenji and Ariestya surprised us one last time with thoughtful parting gifts for the entire family, including adorable wooden toy cars for my nephews. These personal touches turned a luxury vacation into a deeply moving family memory. You guys made our trip so much more than just a vacation; you have gifted us a family memory we will cherish forever. Thank you to the entire team for your incredible hospitality (once again, special shout-out for Kenji and Ariestya!). We can’t wait to see you again."

"We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and overall environment of the resort. The hospitality was warm and professional throughout our stay, and we especially appreciated the attentiveness of our dedicated butler(Dwipa) who took excellent care of every detail. While the property is certainly positioned at a premium price point, the quality of service and overall experience largely justified it. The in-house photography service was also a wonderful touch and allowed us to capture many memorable moments beautifully. We stayed in the largest villa, which offered an exceptional sense of privacy and tranquility, particularly during the early mornings and late evenings. One notable drawback, however, was the noise from the neighboring restaurant’s kitchen exhaust system, which became noticeable once operating hours began. In addition, cooking odors would occasionally drift into the villa area. Both the noise and the smell were somewhat unpleasant and detracted from the otherwise relaxing atmosphere by the pool."
