PB hotel design editorial

Balinese craftsmanship and the formal conventions of a St. Regis address make an unlikely but convincing alliance along the white-sand coastline of Nusa Dua. The St. Regis Bali Resort, which opened in 2008 across eleven hectares of beachfront gardens, resolves that tension through architecture that takes traditional alang-alang thatching and steeply pitched joglo-influenced rooflines seriously as structural grammar rather than decorative gesture. The landscaping, dense with frangipani, coconut palms, and mature tropical planting, gives the resort the feeling of a private estate that has been there considerably longer than it has — pools edged in dark volcanic stone descending in terraced steps toward the beach, red-umbrellaed sun loungers glimpsed through foliage rather than arranged in institutional rows. Inside, the 123 suites and villas move between two registers. Some rooms carry the warmth of hand-carved dark timber four-poster beds, woven bamboo ceiling panels, floral batik-printed rugs, and wayang kulit shadow puppet figures worked into room dividers — a thoroughly Balinese vocabulary applied with considerable care. Others shift toward a more international luxury idiom: tufted velvet ottomans in teal, gilded chandeliers dripping above woven-grass ceilings, etched mirror panels behind the headboard. The beachfront restaurant maintains the balance most successfully, floor-to-ceiling glazing flooding a white-painted double-height dining room with Indian Ocean light while traditional Javanese shadow puppets hang as sculptural screens between tables.

"Outstanding service, rooms and food quality"

"We’re currently staying at St Regis and it’s one of those rare luxury hotels that genuinely delivers — and then keeps surprising you in small ways every day. Breakfast is a highlight on its own. There’s a generous buffet, but what makes it special is how much you can also order à la carte — and it’s not an afterthought. They have several lobster options (lobster omelette, signature eggs, etc.), everything arrives quickly, and it feels properly “luxury” without being stiff. Also: the breakfast restaurant is air-conditioned, which is honestly a big deal in Bali — you can enjoy the view and the atmosphere without melting in the heat. The beach access is easy and convenient, and the saltwater pool is absolutely spectacular — huge, beautiful, and incredibly relaxing. One of our favourite parts is that you can step straight from the villa into the pool, which is such a perfect setup, especially when travelling as a family. Every evening at 6:30 pm they do a fire show, and we ended up watching it almost daily — it became a little ritual for us. There’s also a kids’ club, which made the stay even smoother. And a small detail we loved: in the lobby there are large ponds with colourful fish, and the hotel provides fish food. We fed the fish every morning after breakfast, and somehow that simple routine added so much warmth to our holiday. Overall, St Regis feels thoughtful, comfortable, and genuinely special -a true luxury stay we’d happily repeat."

"Returning now for the second time, and certainly not my last, this hotel is very unique. The buffet is better than anything I’ve ever had. A beautiful buffet for breakfast as well as dinner that also includes ordering à la carte off the menu. Having Foie Gras for breakfast is truly decadent! As well as having steak! The beach is beautiful. The service is excellent. The wraparound saltwater lagoon is really special. Definitely recommend this for a splurge."

"Wow. We spent five nights at the St. Regis in a lagoon access villa and it was one of our best beach experiences anywhere. From the time we arrived through to departure we were treated like kings and queens. The service is over the top - almost too good - and you were always make to feel most welcome. An example - by our second morning we were greeted by name at the Boneka Restaurant. Our villa was massive - an enormous living room with dining area and super comfortable sofa, a beautiful bedroom overlooking the patio and the largest bathroom and walk-in closet I've ever had at a hotel property. The patio included two lounge chairs under an umbrella, a pagoda to hang out in and a small, refreshing fresh water pool. There there were four steps down into the salt water lagoon where you could float/swim for literally a 100+ yards in either direction (we were in villa 809). If you're staying over a Sunday book brunch in the Kayuputi restaurant - an experience you'll never forget (see my separate review). The traditional Indonesian meal at Dulang is also a must and be sure to have cocktails at the St. Regis Bar and catch the champagne sabre ceremony at 6:15 every evening followed by the torch lighting ceremony ay 6:30pm. I found little wanting during our stay. Perhaps the so-so buffet dinner at Boneka being the most disappointing but even then the value was good. The beach is wide with beautiful sand and not crowded at all. Getting a shaded lounge chair is not an issue and there is food and beverage service available. Security is great - they don't allow any vendors on the beach in front of the hotel and very few non-guests wander by as there aren't any large resorts immediately adjacent to the St. Regis. As I mentioned, service is incredible. You have access to butlers while staying in a villa and they set a WhatsApp group for you - so easy for them to make dinner and spa reservations and anything else you need. When we left (use the hotel transportation - it's not expensive) for the airport about ten staff members bade farewell by bowing as the car pulled away. And when we got to the airport there was a member of the hotel team waiting for us who took our bags to check in. Wow."
