PB hotel design editorial

Balinese craftsmanship and the formal conventions of a St. Regis address make an unlikely but convincing alliance along the white-sand coastline of Nusa Dua. The St. Regis Bali Resort, which opened in 2008 across eleven hectares of beachfront gardens, resolves that tension through architecture that takes traditional alang-alang thatching and steeply pitched joglo-influenced rooflines seriously as structural grammar rather than decorative gesture. The landscaping, dense with frangipani, coconut palms, and mature tropical planting, gives the resort the feeling of a private estate that has been there considerably longer than it has — pools edged in dark volcanic stone descending in terraced steps toward the beach, red-umbrellaed sun loungers glimpsed through foliage rather than arranged in institutional rows. Inside, the 123 suites and villas move between two registers. Some rooms carry the warmth of hand-carved dark timber four-poster beds, woven bamboo ceiling panels, floral batik-printed rugs, and wayang kulit shadow puppet figures worked into room dividers — a thoroughly Balinese vocabulary applied with considerable care. Others shift toward a more international luxury idiom: tufted velvet ottomans in teal, gilded chandeliers dripping above woven-grass ceilings, etched mirror panels behind the headboard. The beachfront restaurant maintains the balance most successfully, floor-to-ceiling glazing flooding a white-painted double-height dining room with Indian Ocean light while traditional Javanese shadow puppets hang as sculptural screens between tables.

"This is the nicest resort we have ever been to. Our room was so comfortable and spacious--it had every touch of elegnace that we could ask for. The beach was very clean and the service at the beach was excellent. I loved the saltwater lagoon, it was big enough that I could do nice, long laps in the morning. The breakfast was one of the best we have ever seen--lots of excellent Asian style food as well as more traditional western options. The pastry chef at the resort is amazing. The drinks and service at the pool bar was good--we enjoyed swimming in the pool. I wish this resort wasn't so far away from us, if it were a closer I would go back every year. The people who work at the property are lovely, and so helpful."

"I don’t usually write reviews, but this place truly deserves it. Our stay at The St. Regis Bali Resort was honestly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, the service was on another level. The staff were incredibly attentive, kind, and genuinely caring — you can feel that they actually want you to have the best experience, not just doing their job. We were even surprised with a room upgrade, which made everything feel extra special. Every little detail was taken care of, and they constantly checked in to make sure we were comfortable and happy. The hotel itself is stunning — super clean, luxurious, and peaceful. The food was amazing, and breakfast… wow. Easily one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve ever had. Everything about this place was just perfect. I would 100% come back and stay here again without even thinking twice. Highly recommend if you want a truly relaxing and premium experience in Bali."

"My husband Dave and I spent 4 nights at the St Regis in Nusa Dua, Bali in March. What a wonderful experience on every level. The amenities, the staff, the salt water lagoon, the suite, our private pool, the beach-- it is absolutely heavenly. The welcoming staff, the concierge's all go out of their way to be helpful. It Is also ion a great location for sightseeing around Bali. We had an amazing driver who became a friend-- Mang Nik. We highly recommend you request him. The restaurants are all fantastic. The Balinese restaurant is a must-- They have traditional balinese dancers perform, so beautiful-- the food is spectacular-- the female chef is first rate! Wardana and Antara were our butlers-- they are amazing!! They made our stay truly special. Adi took care of us at the beach and pool restaurant. Also, Anik was a standout waiter at all of the restaurants. This is one of the most memorable places we have ever stayed. And we will happily return. A must if you are traveling to Bali!"

"We were pleasantly surprised to discover our (status-related) upgrade to a large suite with a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was spotless, but a strange odor permeated the entire suite. Was it incense? Tobacco? We requested that housekeeping spray a deodorizer while we were out. It helped a bit, but not completely. The breakfast buffet that was included with our rate was very pleasant. A disappointment was the lack of attention of staff at the entrance. A luxury hotel like the St. Regis should train staff to greet guests as they enter or depart. What we observed: Bell staff and valets chatting with each other, looking at their phones, and generally appearing indifferent. Service is something that sets a high-end hotel like the St. Regis apart, and one would think it would be established with the first impression – and maintained through the last – at the front door."
