PB hotel design editorial

At the centre of Jakarta's most charged civic address, directly behind the Selamat Datang Monument roundabout where six arterial roads converge at Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, a white tower has held its position since 1974 as the Indonesian capital's defining luxury landmark. The Mandarin Oriental Jakarta fills a 25-storey building whose sunburst crown — visible in the aerial image as a radiating fan motif — was conceived as an architectural salute to the new nation's optimism, and the property remains one of the group's longest-established Asian addresses. The tower's broad horizontal window bands, ivory facade, and low-slung podium give it the composed authority of late-modernist civic architecture rather than the glass anonymity of its newer neighbours. Inside, a renovation has pulled the interiors toward a palette of dark-stained zebrano wood, warm champagne textiles, and crimson accent cushions — the guest rooms carrying an understated business-hotel confidence that the city views, sweeping across the CBD toward the Sudirman corridor, do considerable work to elevate. Patterned damask wallcoverings in silver-grey appear in the club-level rooms, adding a quieter decorative note alongside lacquered writing desks and arc floor lamps. The all-day dining restaurant turns its full glass wall toward a dense tropical garden — banana palms, elephant ears, and canopy planting pressed close against the glazing — giving lunch in central Jakarta the unlikely atmosphere of eating beside a rainforest. The outdoor pool deck, dressed in teak decking and a living green wall, completes a property that wears its mid-century civic origins with considerable ease.

"Best location! Comfortable stay! The staff are very professional. I would especially like to express my gratitude to Wasillah from the housekeeping team, who provided extra water to help me stay hydrated during this hot and humid season! Of course, my thanks also go to everyone else who helped me, and to the whole team for their warm smiles!"

"We came to Jakarta for our honeymoon & stayed in MO Jakarta for 1 night. It was our first time staying in MO hotel, and honestly it was beyond what we imagined. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. A big thank you to Angel, Tammy & Vollyn from the Guest Relations team, Dilla from the Reception team, the Concierge team & Deden from the Housekeeping team. Your warmth, kindness & hospitality truly stood out & make us feel right at home. Even the police officers working at the hotel were so friendly & helpful, giving directions whenever we needed. That lady police, makasih banyak ya,kak. One of the sweetest surprise was the doodle of me & husband drawn on the glass. It was such a thoughtful & lovely touch that made our honeymoon even more memorable. & oh! The loving swan couple on the bed made specially by Deden, we love them! 💕 We stayed in a room with the roundabout view below and we absolutely loved it. Watching Jakarta’s “macet” life from above- the busy roundabout, the cars, the city moving non-stop - gave us the true Jakarta vibe. The room itself was beautiful, spacious, and very comfortable. We also loved the classic quartz stone bathroom-timeless & elegant. Another thing that really impressed us was the housekeeping. We went out for a city walk, and when we returned, our drinking water had already been refilled and our slippers were neatly prepared. They may seem like small gestures, but these thoughtful details are exactly what make a luxury hotel stay feel so special. ❤️ It was also the final night of the World Cup (Spain vs Argentina), and although the hotel wasn’t hosting a live viewing, the Concierge team went the extra mile to help my husband figure out how to watch the match through the Telkomsel Maxstream TV app. He was absolutely thrilled! & oh thank you for helping me collect my shopping bag hehe. Little things like these show that the team genuinely cares about making every guest’s stay memorable, no matter how small the request. Breakfast the next morning was excellent- variety of delicious options and we genuinely enjoyed everything including the warm Jahe Wedang! Argh- to die for! Thank you, Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, for making our honeymoon so so so special. It was more than just a stay-it was an experience we’ll always remember. We can’t wait to come back!"

"I will probably always be biased when reviewing MO Jakarta. This property holds a special place for me, having been the setting for countless fond memories over the years, from celebrations to genuinely memorable stays. This visit, however, left me with the feeling that the property is due for its next chapter. A few observations from this stay: (i) Addressing the known issue, dated hard product that starts to meaningfully detract from the stay. The hard product remains elegant, but it is now unmistakably dated, with signs of deferred maintenance becoming increasingly noticeable. Stained window panels, for example, diminish what could otherwise be sweeping views of Jakarta’s skyline. There were also persistent musty smells in parts of the guestroom corridors, while the long-standing soundproofing limitations remain evident. (ii) Noticeable cost-cutting on guest experience. The empty minibar, the rather uninspiring welcome amenities, and even the noticeable change in the quality of certain in-room items, such as the iconic teapot, collectively make the experience feel less distinctive than it once did. (iii) Good service, but opportunities to create memorable moments. Service remains consistently warm and professional throughout the hotel. However, what feels increasingly absent is the element of surprise and delight that distinguishes a good hotel from a truly memorable one. During a period of relatively low occupancy, we felt there was room for more personalised touches. The service was polished and reliable, but largely followed the expected playbook rather than creating moments that felt uniquely Mandarin Oriental. One broader observation, although not specific to Jakarta, is the recently relaunched Mandarin Oriental loyalty programme. While the programme introduces many welcome enhancements on paper, we have found the execution and transparency to vary considerably across properties, making the overall experience feel less intuitive and consistent than it could be. Despite everything, our affection for this property remains unchanged. That affection, however, is also why we hope to see it reimagined. Jakarta’s hotel landscape continues to evolve rapidly, and Mandarin Oriental Jakarta deserves to evolve alongside it, not only to remain competitive, but to deliver the level of experience that has long defined the brand. The foundations are still here: a prime location, a loyal following, and a team that genuinely cares. With thoughtful reinvestment in both the physical product and the guest experience, we believe this hotel has every opportunity to become one of Jakarta’s defining properties once again."

"Wow. What a place. Stayed for my daughter’s birthday and they went above and beyond! Booked the club room, and had a bit of a grumble at check in as was informed that kids weren’t allowed in the club lounge, which essentially meant we couldn’t use any of the benefits of the club room. However Kelly at reception helped us out and managed to sort this. In the room the guest service team of Sherly, Tami, Vollyn and Angel left lots of amazing surprises for my daughter, and decorated the window to celebrate her birthday. Sheryl also found us at check out to give my daughter a card and cake. This cake is on top of the (huge) cakes the kids earned by collecting stamps around the hotel In the lounge my daughter was given a special desert from the main restaurant and a card from Vina, Mehnaz, Intan and Oki. Service was exceptional at every step, room was great, and breakfast was amazing."
