PB hotel design editorial

Yogyakarta's cultural twin, Solo — or Surakarta, to use its full name — has long lived in the shadow of its more touristed neighbor, which makes the arrival of Alila Solo all the more pointed: a twenty-five-floor tower rising above the Solo Square commercial district that announces itself less as a hotel grafted onto the city than as a vertical argument for Solo's own contemporary ambitions. The facade, visible in the images against the blue-hour sky, is composed in a rhythm of inset windows and projecting white concrete planes, the massing stepping and recessing in a way that breaks the tower's considerable height into more legible increments. Inside, the interiors navigate the tension between the brand's characteristic restraint and Javanese cultural specificity with considerable care. Guest rooms are finished in warm oak-toned millwork and polished stone flooring, the palette running through sand, taupe, and charcoal — but each room is anchored by large-scale ink-wash artworks above the bedhead that draw directly from wayang shadow-puppet tradition, their gestural figuration giving the rooms a distinct sense of place. Suites replace the stone floors with wide timber planks and wrap three walls in wood veneer panelling, a vertical band of carved batik-pattern detailing framing the television wall. The mid-level pool terrace, planted with slender trees between timber decking and modular seating, spreads across a podium roof with panoramic views of the city's low residential spread reaching to the horizon.

"I felt a wave of nostalgia during my stay when the hotel served my childhood favorites like jenang sumsum, brambang asem, and jamu for breakfast. These comforting Indonesian treats brought back fond memories and made my morning meal truly special. The cozy atmosphere and attentive service were highlights, but one note: the shower area got completely soaked after use—need some improvements."
