PB hotel design editorial

Wild horses running the shoreline at Nihiwatu Beach is not a marketing conceit — it is simply what happens on one of the most remote stretches of coastline in the Indonesian archipelago, where Sumba's semi-feral Sandalwood ponies treat the sand as their own. NIHI Sumba, which Claude and Petra Graves transformed from a surf camp into what Travel + Leisure once ranked the world's best hotel, spreads across 567 acres of southwestern Sumbanese hillside in a loose constellation of thatched villas and pavilions that seem less designed than grown from the landscape. The vernacular architecture draws directly from uma mbatangu, the traditional high-roofed clan houses of Sumba, their steep alang-alang grass thatch and hand-hewn timber columns translating into guest structures without condescension or pastiche. Interiors shift register between categories — some villas deploy raw bamboo rafters, lime-washed walls, and antique ikat panels hung like tapestries against earth-toned plaster, while the more elevated accommodations open their teak-framed bedroom pavilions directly to the Indian Ocean through retractable walls, four-poster beds draped in white muslin catching the sea breeze above sisal rugs and blue-and-white block-print textiles that echo the indigo-dyed fabrics Sumba has produced for centuries. The beach club and sunset bar, furnished in teak with white-cushioned loose-back chairs arranged on sand, make no argument for sophistication — they simply point everything toward the horizon and let the light do the work.

"The overall experience at NIHI Sumba was breathtaking and unique. A perfect mix where pure nature and luxury meet. Special calming and energizing atmosphere paired with great activities like horse riding and padel. One of the most impressive things is definitely the NIHIoka SPA and the SPA safari. My house masters Upi and Ayu where the best. Taking take of me in the best way possible."

"Nihi Sumba dines out on its last decade appellation as the best hotel in the world, and there is no question that it remains a top-tier barefoot luxury destination. However, the years have not been altogether kind to it, while at the same time the global bar for such resorts has continued to rise. There are many things to like about Nihi, which are well captured in other reviews: the setting, the relentlessly friendly staff, the spacious, private and well laid out villas, the stunning beach, the list goes on. It is an impressive achievement to have created and maintained this place where it is. But because so many other reviewers breathlessly just engage in confirmation bias, a bit more balance might be helpful to future guests. - Elements of the property are showing their age and there is a fair bit of deferred maintenance; it is simply not in tip-top shape any more. The photos here show the current front of the resort viewed from the beach, and there are smaller issues of aging and wear present widely. - It is commendable that virtually all the staff are local, and they couldn't possibly be more pleasant - but Sumba does not have a hospitality culture and there are regular small lapses in service that one would not generally expect at a property of this level; places like Singita do a better job of providing seamless service while still relying heavily on local talent. - The travel to the resort is not as remote or forbidding as some suggest, but it is also not as bucolic as the resort would lead you to believe. One needs to fly on one of a few local Indonesian carriers, one of which was blacklisted for a time by the EU for safety issues, and then drive in an open vehicle for what is close to two hours along a reasonably active road where you will likely spend more time breathing in fumes from the old truck in front of you than seeing scenic vistas; much of the drive is through populated areas (although the vistas are stunning when they appear). - Some of its facilities, while doubtless at market level more than a decade ago, are not anymore (like quite a small gym by current high-end resort standards). None of these are disabling criticisms and some are to be expected given the remote and undeveloped location. But there was a time when Nihi was in a class virtually by itself, and time and competition have in my view caused an erosion of that standing. Bottom line: Lovely people, interesting place, certainly preferable to Bali if you don't mind the incremental travel/logistics. But if you come expecting something akin to a high-end Maldives resort or African safari, you may be mildly disappointed."

"After a dreamy vacation in early 2025 we decided to come to Sumba and Nihi. We did not regret it one minute. We simply love the island's vibes, which we consider one of the last (almost) untouched tropical paradises in the world, its people and especially Nihi and their staff, whom we feel have become our dear friends. Working myself in the hotel industry I truly can certify that this resort and its employees stand out and go above and beyond to provide for an exceptional experience. If you look for a remote location with 5 star +++ service, Nihi is your go to!"
