PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of the Menoreh Hills in Central Java, with the ninth-century Buddhist monument of Borobudur visible across the plain, architect Ed Tuttle conceived Amanjiwo as an architectural conversation with one of the world's great sacred structures. Opened in 1997, the property's central rotunda — a domed pavilion in local Palimanan limestone rising above terraced gardens of clipped hedgerow — draws its geometry directly from the stupa form, translating ancient Javanese-Buddhist architecture into a language of contemporary resort design without pastiche or mimicry. The colonnade that curves around the main terrace and pool, visible in candlelight at dusk, carries the same cream-stone rhythm as the rotunda's colonnaded drum, giving the entire compound a formal coherence unusual even within the Aman portfolio. The thirty-six suites are arranged in two-storey pavilions stepping down the hillside, each interior framed by square Palimanan columns that echo the structural vocabulary of the central building. Warm teak panelling covers the walls, Balinese ikat textile fragments are set into recessed niches, and locally crafted timber chairs with circular carved backs furnish the sitting areas — all of it grounded by cream limestone floors that connect every interior to the landscape outside. Private plunge pools with thatched bale pavilions extend the living space outward toward the jungle canopy, while the main pool terrace, flanked by sculptural topiary and frangipani, keeps the forest-clad hills as its permanent backdrop.

"My partner has never been to an Aman and wanted to experience it. So we chose Amanjiwo as it's close to where we live (Singapore). Getting there was a breeze as there's a direct flight, and the Yogyakarta airport on arrival was virtually empty and we were out and met the Aman resort car in minutes. The drive - the resort is about 1.5 hours drive away, passing by some beautiful country side. I noticed the drive is much more beautiful than a similar drive in Bali, where it's usually lined with dingy and dirty shops and buildings, not to mention the horrible traffic. The resort - the building and architecture is iconic and amazing, somewhat a blend of temple and palace. I have been to a few Amans but feel the older generation is more to my liking than the new batch of Amans (New York, Tokyo, etc.). The older ones like Amanjiwo are much more unique, blending local architure with Aman's signature minimalism. We got a pool suite - the pool is actually quite large, overlooking trees and rice paddy. What I love the Aman the most is the peace and tranquility it installs in you. I honestly don't know why other $1000+ resorts can't replicate this, but it's this profound peace that makes me loving almost all the Aman properties I have visited. Service - impeccable of course, the staff manages to be both attentive and "invisible" at same time. Food - not bad but I wouldn't say it's the best I have ever had at a resort, wish there are more non-local varieties. Borobudur - Amanjiwo arranged a VIP tour, the guide took us way up to the top and work our way level by level down, instead of upwards. SO we avoided the group tours, that was brilliant. All in all, my partner was so impressed that he was checking which Aman he wants to visit next on day 2 of the stay at Amanjiwo."

"Wow we are in the final stages of getting ready to head to Asia and Amanjiwo Hotel in Borobudur decided they are going to shutdown for the month we are in Asia. Reservation made 6 months ago. We have tours, airplane tickets, etc. . They suggested we could either change our dates or just go to their other hotels in another city on the same dates. That is so thoughtful of them, they will really let us come to another property in another city. . Inconsiderate ! Also they never responded on my emails of a couple months ago about tours and airport logistics. So far ZERO STARS thanks for the last minute cancel Never staying at Aman Hotels again"

"We were putting AMAN at the top of our list of hotels after outstanding recent visits to Aman Hotels in Sri Lanka, Turkey and Indonesia. However, follow-up to a recent visit to Amanjiwo has made us realize the brand does not live up to its image or offer value for their highly priced offerings. I sent the note below multiple times to the contact emails I had for the front desk, billing and on your inquiry form. I was disappointed to get no response to any of my notes. They seem to have been ignored hoping that I would forget about this. I would have been happy to get a response that they are sorry but can not compensate me for my loss for some policy reason and that you will take action to make others aware of the risks of their safe design. However, no response is not acceptable behavior and we will have second thoughts about using their hotels again. We are planning a trip to China for next year and were considering the Aman Summer Palace in Beijing but are now leaning toward the Rosewood Hotel there. Unanswered note to hotel We recently had a wonderful stay at your hotel from September 10 to September 13. However, I want to report a problem we had. The safe in your rooms is an unusual design in a drawer that has the door close down on the contents. Most safes in hotel rooms open from the front. On our last day at the hotel we put our iPad with our wallets and passports in the safe when we went to breakfast. When we came back and opened the safe we found out that the door of the safe cracked the screen on our iPad when it closed and made it unusable. It appears that something on the bottom of the safe door is uneven and projects out into the safe which hit the screen of the iPad. The safe door also clamps down when closed that also caused the crack in the iPad. We were leaving on a cruise from Bali that afternoon and had to purchase a new iPad at an IBOX store in Bali at a cost of US $ 409.31 . I reported this loss to the front desk when we checked out but I am not sure if they recorded it. We would appreciate if the hotel could reimburse us for our loss since we believe it was due to the design of your safe. Thank you."

"Amanjiwo is a place where culture and serenity lingers, the famous Borobudor view, the rice fields and the impressive Amanjiwo architectural design makes this abode a perfect venue for a lovely escape. There is a special ambience which you cant find somewhere else. The villas blend with the natural sorroundings, the food is just the best Indonesiian we have tried and the service top and the outdoor pool is gorgeous. Aman never fails. A place where we would plan of visiting again. So peaceful and magical."

"Stayed at Amanjiwo for 2 nights back in August. Everything from the villa itself, the location, the food and the staffs were top notch. I had plenty of small requests from here and there and they were handled perfectly. Probably the best resort In Java island… This is my second time at an Aman property (and first time since more than a decade), can’t wait to try out other Amans as well! The only downside of the stay is that it was too short!"
