PB hotel design editorial

Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, the architect behind Ireland's Parliament House on College Green, designed this Palladian manor in 1732 for the Archbishop of Cashel — a commission that placed one of the country's most accomplished Georgian buildings in the shadow of the Rock itself. Cashel Palace Hotel returned to life on 1 March 2022 after a painstaking multi-year restoration led by Smallwood Architects, which extended the original structure to accommodate 42 bedrooms and suites, a spa, and a ballroom without disturbing the building's essential character. The dressed limestone facade, with its brick chimney stacks and mansard dormers visible in the evening light, carries the composed authority of its Georgian origins, while the new wing to the side — rendered in a quieter, contemporary idiom — steps back rather than competing. Inside, London-based Emma Pearson Design Studio calibrated the interiors to feel more like a well-loved private house than a managed property. The principal bedrooms in the historic core are dressed in blush pinks and warm creams, with four-poster beds, working fireplaces, Swedish-painted secretaires, and Georgian lantern pendants overhead — a palette that flatters the surviving plasterwork cornices and original wood panelling. The dining room is anchored by a row of equestrian portraits that nod to Tipperary's racing culture, set against rich leather banquettes and plum velvet chairs. The spa pavilion shifts register entirely: pale limestone, floor-to-ceiling glazing onto the manicured lawn, and an atmosphere of clean Nordic calm that provides genuine counterpoint to the grandeur upstairs.

About

At the foot of a hill — in the shadow of Ireland’s most iconic medieval site, the Rock of Cashel — stands another architectural masterpiece, the five-star Cashel Palace. Built in 1728 by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce, the architect who designed the Parliament House in Dublin, this red brick manor was once the residence of Ireland’s archbishops. It is a brilliant blend of classicism and sophistication, with a façade that hides behind its symmetrical layout a world of surprises: a majestic colonnaded hall, walls covered in detailed wood panelling, staircases with handrails carved in the shape of candy canes, and rooms that seem to have been taken from a fairy tale. With its English-style gardens, comfortable sofas warmed by the cosy fire of the bar, and a spa bathed in light, Cashel Palace takes its guests on a magical journey. It is an idyllic refuge where you can recharge your batteries before plunging into the area’s Celtic history or wandering through the enchanting moorland.

"My wife and I spent one night here, and thank God we had only scheduled it for a single night. After visiting some true luxury hotels, such as Castlemartyr and the Cliff Hotel, we expected a similar or better visit here, but that was not to be. The bedroom was about 1/2 the size of what we had at the other resorts, and the bathroom was tiny as well. We could only fit a single suitcase next to the bed, the other luggage had to be squeezed into the closet or left in the car. The bathroom had no bathtub and no proper bathroom counter. Instead, the toiletries balanced on a little shelf next to the toilet. Another feature of the bathroom was that it has a large unobstructed window facing a public walkway, so unless the drapes were completely closed, the bathroom activities were in full view of any other guests passing by. In all fairness, the service was excellent, the food incredible, the views out-of-this-world, and the spa comfortable enough. But with such inadequate lodging, we were happy as could be to leave it behind."

"A truly memorable experience. From the moment of booking to arrival, the service was exceptional. The valet and reception teams were attentive, friendly, and highly professional, making us feel welcome from the start. The dining experience was equally impressive, with amazing food and fantastic service throughout."

"Beautiful premises, very central and easy to get to and around. Our room was spacious, clean, well laid out and stocked, the view of the gardens is lovely. The bed was probably the best we ever had, and the accessible bathroom is to the highest standard. The staff is the jewel in the crown, they went above and beyond any extra mile generally provided at 5-star establishments."

"We stayed here for a one night DBB package, keen to embrace the hotel’s comfort and hospitality. Location is halfway (ish) between Cork/Kerry and Dublin. Great for a stopover to break the journey either way. Original building, a Queen Anne gem sitting in front of the famous Rock of Cashel at the end of the pretty back garden with its iconic Mulberry trees. It must be lovely to sit outside on the terrace on a summers evening facing west into the sun. The renovation and extensions have accumulated to an eccentric layout all augmented by an extensive art collection, heavy on Yeats, with a smattering of Lavery and, oddly, JS Lowry. The whole feel of the place is of an Irish Country house of the upper quality with its maintenance schedule absolutely up to date. We really enjoyed our dinner in the Bishops Buttery and in the Queen Anne room for breakfast. Both have a very sure handed approach with top quality ingredients. Occasional moments of brilliance against a very high constant level of gorgeous food. Our ground floor room had a surprise feature - a view of the garden with a small terrace along with a table to enjoy the sun when it peeps out. Very comfortable, smartly decked out and very pleasant. One of the hardest aspects to get right and to keep right in any establishment such as this, is the staffing. Here people are friendly, efficient and helpful- from start to finish. Eoin in the residents bar - a font of knowledge as he plies his trade with evident enjoyment and pride. The ladies at reception so friendly. At dinner so correct but with a smile. This was a sublime experience and a credit to the management and ownership. We will return, again and hopefully again many times."
