PB hotel design editorial

Ivy-covered red brick rising behind a cobbled forecourt in Cork's university quarter, the building that houses Hayfield Manor has the bearing of a Georgian country house while being, in fact, considerably younger — constructed in the 1990s to replicate that tradition rather than inherit it. The distinction matters less than you might expect. With its Mansard roofline, tall sash windows, and deeply planted gardens, the property earns its country-house register through material conviction rather than historical accident, and the 88-room hotel has since become one of Ireland's most quietly authoritative five-star addresses. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. The bar anchors itself in the vocabulary of a traditional Irish gentleman's club — dark mahogany joinery, chequerboard marble flooring in terracotta and cream, ornate plasterwork cornicing, and an open fire throwing amber light across leather-upholstered bar stools. The restaurant pivots toward something more contemporary: herringbone-laid pale oak floors, grey nailhead dining chairs, grasscloth wall panels, and a gilt chandelier overhead that keeps the room from abandoning warmth entirely. Guest rooms sustain the country-house tone through striped silk wallcoverings, quilted upholstered headboards, mirrored occasional tables, and tall plantation shutters filtering the garden light — a palette running from soft gold and champagne to dove grey and lavender that gives each room a slightly different mood while remaining unmistakably part of the same considered whole.

"I visited the spa and was booked in for The Biome Repair Facial. The spa manager Sarah was extremely knowledgeable and helpful when making my booking as to what treatment would suit me. My therapist Karen who did the treatment was excellent, she talked me through the whole treatment and made me feel extremely comfortable as someone who has never had a spa treatment before. I came out of it feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Would highly recommend for people going solo or with others!"

"Location—Excellent, easy enough to get to from the city and into the city. Atmosphere - Calm, serene, and welcoming. Rooms - Stayed in a Manor King, which was extremely spacious; the bathroom was a good size too with a tub. Value - Booked on short notice, so paid more than would normally be the case with planning, but still felt good value though. Cleanliness - Extremely clean hotel. Noise Level - Serene; no noise to speak of. Service - First Class, from the moment you arrive, the reception, to anything needed, and on departure also. Amenities - We didn't use the amenities but certainly would have with a longer stay. We stayed for one evening as a first night away from a young baby. We were incredibly well looked after and could not want for anything, and as I made it known to the hotel beforehand that I was planning to propose, they provided a nice bonus congratulations chocolate display & card after the event. We are certainly planning to go back for another night or two in the future. It's the best hotel experience in Cork, having lived in the area for over 15 years and having stayed in the city frequently for work / events."

The breakfast was wonderful: beautiful decoration, exclusive herbs and drinks, amazing atmosphere created an unforgettable atmosphere. I especially want to mention Daria from the reception. She created a truly royal welcome for me! Thank you all for a wonderful time at your hotel! MARYNA"

"Probably the best service I have had in a hotel to date… the staff were amazing… the rooms were spotless and the beds comfortable…. Lovely massage in the spa as well. The reasons I have given this a good and not an excellent…. Firstly the spa is not really what you would expect from a 5 star hotel amenities wise….. and secondly the standard of the food lets it down slightly. Breakfast was excellent , dinner only ok…. Overall though we had a lovely relaxing break….."
