PB hotel design editorial

Reflected in the still water of the Owenmore River against a backdrop of Connemara's quartzite peaks, the grey stone castle that houses Ballynahinch Castle has been one of Connacht's most atmospheric addresses for centuries — its walls having sheltered, at various points, the O'Flaherty chieftains, the Maharaja Ranjitsinhji, and the naturalist and novelist Richard Berridge. Built in its current form in the early nineteenth century and converted into a hotel in 1946, the four-storey castellated manor sits within a 700-acre sporting estate where the Ballynahinch River, one of Ireland's finest salmon fisheries, curves through ancient woodland before the Twelve Bens mountains rise sharply behind. The interiors navigate the particular challenge of the Irish country house hotel with more conviction than most — keeping the atmosphere of an inhabited house rather than slipping into heritage pastiche. Bedrooms carry this off through deliberate tonal variety: some dressed in warm cream with dark ebony four-poster beds, tartan throws, and chintz curtains framing lake views through Gothic-arched sash windows; others in cooler sage and duck-egg blue with ikat-patterned wallpapers, Regency-style mahogany chests, and botanical prints grouped above reading chairs. The dining room, its run of tall Gothic windows drawing the river landscape directly into the room, is furnished with tufted leather armchairs and dark-stained oak floors, the whole effect closer to a well-loved private dining room than a formal hotel restaurant. Cast-iron terrace furniture and plaid wool throws complete the composition outdoors.

"Don’t let the pictures fool you. Don’t even know where to begin, but we decided to check out immediately after checking in for our 3 nights stay. We only stayed the 1st night because we had just driven 3 hours to get there and there was no where else to stay. Hotel is beyond “tired”. Dirty everywhere in common areas and absolutely shocking to experience this. Bug mites from midges everywhere on my head. I literally cried as soon as we got to the room and went back to the desk saying we could not stay there in this environment. Didn’t seem like the 1st time he had heard that. Total false advertising with the photos as nothing in actuality even remotely resembles their product/photos. We r going to try to get a refund back for the 1st night as it is definitely false advertising."

"Not a luxury hotel. For the most part not a castle. Room was mediocre at best, no more than a standard hotel room. Mold in the shower. 10-12 round mirror was the only mirror available to dry hair etc. since no plug is available in the bathroom. The hotel’s accommodation for the issue was to provide a commercial extension cord spool. No AC and if windows are open with lights on, (or even the light from your iPhone), gnats come in. Two hell flights of stairs to the lower level if you are unfortunate enough to be assigned to the lowest level. Also no privacy with people walking in front of the window. Nice view if you didn’t have to keep the curtains shut. The presentation of the restaurant’s food was nice, unfortunately it was not good."

"A really lovely hotel in a beautiful part of Ireland. We stayed as part of a road trip tour of the west coast and had a fantastic stay. We opted for a river view room so had a great outlook over the grounds. Very peaceful. The room was excellent and both restaurants were amazing with a wide selection af great food and a good selection of wines by the glass. Very helpful and friendly staff and live music in the bar on one of the nights we were there. Good parking too."

"This was the highlight of our 16 day Ireland visit. Beautiful setting, relaxed, elegant but not overly fussy. Our room was small, but that is to be expected in most European accommodations. The grounds were beyond compare- you really felt transported to a different place and time. I would return in a heartbeat."
