PB hotel design editorial

Reflected in the still water of the Owenmore River against a backdrop of Connemara's quartzite peaks, the grey stone castle that houses Ballynahinch Castle has been one of Connacht's most atmospheric addresses for centuries — its walls having sheltered, at various points, the O'Flaherty chieftains, the Maharaja Ranjitsinhji, and the naturalist and novelist Richard Berridge. Built in its current form in the early nineteenth century and converted into a hotel in 1946, the four-storey castellated manor sits within a 700-acre sporting estate where the Ballynahinch River, one of Ireland's finest salmon fisheries, curves through ancient woodland before the Twelve Bens mountains rise sharply behind. The interiors navigate the particular challenge of the Irish country house hotel with more conviction than most — keeping the atmosphere of an inhabited house rather than slipping into heritage pastiche. Bedrooms carry this off through deliberate tonal variety: some dressed in warm cream with dark ebony four-poster beds, tartan throws, and chintz curtains framing lake views through Gothic-arched sash windows; others in cooler sage and duck-egg blue with ikat-patterned wallpapers, Regency-style mahogany chests, and botanical prints grouped above reading chairs. The dining room, its run of tall Gothic windows drawing the river landscape directly into the room, is furnished with tufted leather armchairs and dark-stained oak floors, the whole effect closer to a well-loved private dining room than a formal hotel restaurant. Cast-iron terrace furniture and plaid wool throws complete the composition outdoors.

"What an absolute joy! The room we had was beautiful, incredible view and so much space, the food and the service were exemplary, but the main point in my review are the people. From Kathleen on Reception when we arrived, Niall (I think) who helped us with our bags, to Shannon our incredible walk guide (who barely drew breath for the whole two hours!), and every member of the team be it our cleaner, our waiting teams, the bar, everyone, what an inspirational team! Absolutely outstanding, and oh yes we will be back!"

"In the world of same same all over the world, this is different. Never have I felt more welcomed or taken care of as I did in mid-February in Ballinahinch Castle. Myself and my wife had a 2 night stay that was 12 nights too short! We didn't want for a single thing all weekend. Sauna was a special highlight with a private view into the Wild Atlantic Wilderness and a lake to dip into between the woodfire heat of the sauna and the cold buckets showers outside the door of the sauna. The team are so attentive and nice, the atmosphere was just really special. The common rooms, with crackling fires and soft touches made for very special afternoons with pots of tea and coffee along with warm scones on demand! Food in the restaurant was amazing, the bar food was also excellent. By in large, it was leaving life in the rear-view mirror, once we left Oughterard and then arriving to tranquility personified. Everything was 5*....and I mean everything. The walls are adorned with the most stunning and understated Art collections in the country. Included were WB Yeats, Paul Henry and so many others that bring you through a history of the Irish greats! It was like a bonus to the stay, just walking the halls and taking in a truly magnificent collection was special. Its the only time, when checking out, I made another booking to come back. Truly special and everything you need inside 1 gate! Thank you Team Ballinahinch, you have made a special location and special experience."

"We had a splendid time at Ballynahinch Castle hotel! As such, I wanted to go out of my way to put in a good review for them. Most visitors go to Ashford castle but this is really a good equivalent, even though it might be slightly out of the way, but much more reasonably priced. We liked everything about our stay - the castle itself, rooms (we stayed in the main castle), staff/service, decor, the views, pub, dinner, breakfast, the grounds, and walks around the castle. It was one of our best hotel stays and we have been to multiple five star locations all over the world. It was a true authentic experience which transported us to times gone by. A very relaxing and not to be missed experience!"

"Just returned from our annual family Christmas stay at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel. Everything about this hotel is excellent, the exceptionally warm welcome from the staff, standard of accommodation, dinner in both the restaurant and bar, breakfast overlooking the river and so on. Our entire family, including a third generation grandchild, look forward to this break every year and this year didn’t disappoint, already planning Christmas ’26! Thanks to Eoin and every member of staff for your wonderful hospitality, all of which makes Ballynahinch Castle an outstanding hotel."
