PB hotel design editorial

Behind a Georgian brick facade on Harcourt Street, where Dublin's Victorian terraces give way to the city's most reliably chaotic nightlife corridor, The Dean arrived in 2015 with a brief that most hotels on this stretch would never attempt: to be genuinely of the neighbourhood rather than insulated from it. The building's fanlight entrance and cast-iron railings survive intact, but step inside and the continuity ends — the lobby shifts into something closer to a late-night bar than a check-in hall, with diamond-quilted dark leather wall panels, herringbone timber floors, iMacs on the desk, and a neon sign overhead reading I fell in love here that sets the tone immediately. The 52 rooms, designed by Dublin studio Denise O'Connor of Moloko, work a palette of slate blue and petrol green across panelled walls, pairing tufted upholstered headboards with amber suede armchairs on hairpin-leg frames, Marshall speakers on walnut credenzas, and ceiling fans that push the whole thing toward a kind of updated mid-century cool without tipping into pastiche. The herringbone floor pattern carries through from the lobby into the rooms, maintaining coherence across the building's six floors. Up top, the Sophie's rooftop bar strips everything back — exposed steel ceiling grid, poured concrete counter, black-painted stools — and frames a wide-angle panorama of Dublin's roofline, with Christ Church Cathedral visible across the city's low skyline.

"We attended a family wedding at The Dean Hotel Dublin we stayed in the hotel for 2 nights Friday 13th and Saturday 14th February. We found the staff were very friendly but that’s where it ended. Our daughters shared one room and my husband and I the other. On Saturday morning our daughters realised the sheet on which they slept on was stained. On notifying reception they were told they would have the linen changed which they did. Our room however was very disappointing to say the least. The carpet was dirty, the hand basin was badly stained and the tap in the bathroom was loose. On moving a table lamp a piece of wooden art fell off the wall ( photos included).the screws were far too small and there were no plugs in the wall to hold it in place. When we booked our stay our breakfast was included in the price we went to the restaurant on the 5th floor on Saturday morning we were met by a waiter who informed us of what we were allowed to have ( 1 juice, 1 mains and 1 tea or coffee). When checking out on Sunday morning we raised these issues with the receptionist whose response was the hotel was 10 years old and was due to close for renovations. In other words what should we expect !!!! What we did expect was a clean room at the very least. We will NOT be returning to the Dean any time soon. Extremely disappointing."

"Our room was comfortable although a bit grubby, the carpets in the living area were stained and furniture was well worn. Sofa was very comfortable, as was the bed and bed linen was good quality. Did not like the open partitions between bathroom and bedroom, no privacy and meant if someone went to the toilet at night the other was woken up. Noise from the road, gym and night club was a nuisance but bedroom had secondary glazing so that helped but living area was really noisy, view from the balcony was just a building site and the balcony was again pretty grubby, not somewhere you would want to sit out in. Had dinner at Sophie’s which was nice and the venue and service were very good. Used the plunge pool, sauna wasn’t working, the gym had nice well equipped changing rooms. Overall we enjoyed our stay but this hotel lacks the features that traditional hotels offer, felt more like an upmarket back packers hostel. All staff were exceptionally friendly."

"Stayed in the Dean on the 26th of December. When we arrived we entered the lift to go up to Sophies and while in the lift it dropped a few feet. When assigned our room on entry there was a foul smell and on review of the room the ENTIRE headboard was covered in MOULD. Not to mention after all of the commotion and being moved room etc we went to FINALLY enjoy our stay by going to the pool & sauna but to our surprise the sauna was out of order without any notice. When we brought all of the above issues to the lady at the desk they were more than unhelpful. I followed up with an email to the hotel to which they have also not taken seriously with the Major health & safety issues between the lift & the literal mould in our room!!!!"

"Stayed here a few times but stayed on Monday the 30th Dec as a Christmas gift The shower was dripping for whole time we were there. When I went to use towel there was red make up on it But the main issue was no sleep as nightclub was open till 3.15am and you can clearly here DJ talking and all the people singing along I met a lady at reception the next morning had same issue So get some sleep before you go there"
