PB hotel design editorial

Behind a Georgian brick facade on Harcourt Street, where Dublin's Victorian terraces give way to the city's most reliably chaotic nightlife corridor, The Dean arrived in 2015 with a brief that most hotels on this stretch would never attempt: to be genuinely of the neighbourhood rather than insulated from it. The building's fanlight entrance and cast-iron railings survive intact, but step inside and the continuity ends — the lobby shifts into something closer to a late-night bar than a check-in hall, with diamond-quilted dark leather wall panels, herringbone timber floors, iMacs on the desk, and a neon sign overhead reading I fell in love here that sets the tone immediately. The 52 rooms, designed by Dublin studio Denise O'Connor of Moloko, work a palette of slate blue and petrol green across panelled walls, pairing tufted upholstered headboards with amber suede armchairs on hairpin-leg frames, Marshall speakers on walnut credenzas, and ceiling fans that push the whole thing toward a kind of updated mid-century cool without tipping into pastiche. The herringbone floor pattern carries through from the lobby into the rooms, maintaining coherence across the building's six floors. Up top, the Sophie's rooftop bar strips everything back — exposed steel ceiling grid, poured concrete counter, black-painted stools — and frames a wide-angle panorama of Dublin's roofline, with Christ Church Cathedral visible across the city's low skyline.

"Disappointing. Rude receptionist. Also stated they dnt give receipts for luggage left despite checking in with my partner later and not knowing details of his company and how they do it she wouldn't let me leave luggage so told my partner to cancel as instead we will go to the many other wonderful hotel s with better facilities like Castlekock hotel"

"Really disappointing stay this time around. Shower gel bottle was empty, really weak power in the shower (presuming low pressure is due to building works), TV remote wouldn't work (batteries were held in place by tape!), and no hot water for a shower on the morning of check-out. I find it interesting that upon checking out, all I was asked was if I had taken anything from the mini-bar - no questions around how I enjoyed my stay or how I found the facilities. Not a great experience."

"We got married at The Dean in Feb 2026. We were looking for a city centre venue that would be flexible in it's offering, a bit cool and could hold more that 100 people and The Dean ticked all those boxes. Kaela, the wedding planner was excellent from the outset and was quick and clear with the offerings. We wanted to do things like our food service a little differently and they were receptive and responsive to everything - even coming up with more food options for us when requested. They were the only place in Dublin that we spoke to who were happy to do things our way, rather that us doing things their way which we really appreciated. We had several meetings leading up to the day which gave us confidence. The staff on the day could not do more for us. They checked people in early when rooms were available and anything we asked for they said 'yes' with no hesitation and made it happen. Ari in particular was amazing. Our guests had a great time too and complimented the Marshall room which we would definitely recommend and the food. Thank you to all the staff for an excellent day!"

"Cool vibe, not a comfy hotel. Like sleeping in a well-decorated warehouse. Dead birds outside the bathroom on the ledge were an interesting vibe. Good for a hen night-not a family."
