PB hotel design editorial

Point Square in Dublin's north docklands — the regenerated former industrial waterfront that repositioned itself as the city's entertainment quarter in the 2000s — gave the Gibson Hotel its architectural brief almost by default. Completed in 2010, the property was designed by Dublin practice Reardon Smith Architects and sits at the centre of a mixed-use development anchored by the 3Arena concert venue, which explains the building's emphatically contemporary presence: a glazed curtain wall wrapped in horizontal aluminium brise-soleil, the whole structure cantilevered beneath a steel-framed canopy that shelters the entrance forecourt. The effect from street level is less hotel arrival than corporate campus gateway, though the interior quickly corrects that impression. The 252 rooms carry a palette of sage green, warm taupe, and acid yellow that tracks the property's music-industry adjacency without leaning too hard into theme — timber-slatted balcony screens filter garden views in the lower-floor rooms, while upper floors open onto the docklands skyline through full-height glazing. Public spaces work harder: the top-floor Sevens Bar deploys lacquered red ceiling fins, polished granite bar surfaces, and chartreuse velvet seating against floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic city views, while the ground-floor restaurant arranges red banquette seating beneath a double-height glazed wall overlooking the landscaped courtyard. The Gibson lands somewhere between business hotel and music destination — a positioning that suits Point Square's own unresolved identity rather well.

The Gibson Reviews

"Nightmare. You have to take 3 flights of escalators to the front desk. Hotel room air is broken on arrival. No maintenance working to repair. No extra rooms because violent concert goers have taken over entire neighborhood. It is almost 1am and still Loud outside. Bed linen is not clean. Hotel lost 2 bags from someone else in our group and knocked on our door trying to find them. Don’t stay here. I can’t get this night back"

"Stopped by The Gibson before a show at the 3 Arena and it ended up being one of the highlights of the night. Flávia at the bar was brilliant: warm, attentive and clearly passionate about what she does. Patrick was managing the floor with the kind of ease that only comes from someone who really knows their craft. Slick operation, great atmosphere, perfect location. Will definitely be back: with or without a show next door."

"Great Atmosphere! Honestly loved the nachos, it was one of the best I have ever tried. The staff were all very friendly, including the manager, Patrick who was an absolute gent! Well Done, we will be back soon for a few old fashions and food."

"We were here last week for a concert, from start to finish it was great. POSITIVES Quiet room with a comfy bed and good shower. Great dinner in Coda restaurant Lovely cocktails A wonderful restaurant/bar manager who was working in both places and he was super friendly and great at making cocktails. Good breakfast the next day NEGATIVES They need to sort out the roof garden that you see from your bedroom window, we have stayed numerous times and it never looks well."

"I'll start off by saying this is not a 4* hotel, I would class it as a very low 3*. Entrance into hotel is filty and so was our room. Floors hadn't been washed, you could see stains from last guests. Shower was disgusting and leaked. We booked dinner in the restaurant, food was delicious, with the exception of meat was overcooked. But they rushed us out, as soon as we where finished a course they had the next one in front of us not giving us time to digest the last. We also got breakfast in the room. Omg I was shocked. No butter for toast, no sugar for coffee, bacon was so overcooked it was like sandpaper, everything was cold. Im truly shocked and appalled that they can get away with this service. I can guarantee that I will never ever stay in this establishment again. 435 euros for the wrose hotel in dublin."
