PB hotel design editorial

The terracotta brick facade on Harcourt Terrace — three storeys of High Victorian Gothic brickwork, pointed arch entrance, decorative corbelling, and tall chimney stacks stepping against Dublin sky — belongs to a row of late nineteenth-century townhouses that the Georgian grid of Dublin 2 gives way to as you move south toward the canal. Converted into The Wilder Townhouse, the property preserves the building's Victoriana on the outside while working a more eclectic interior register within its 42 rooms. Inside, the approach is one of layered eclecticism rather than period restoration. Guestrooms retain their original white-painted plaster fireplaces with encaustic tile inserts, and herringbone-laid dark oak parquet runs throughout, but the furniture introduces a confident mid-century vocabulary — ochre wing chairs, scallop-backed velvet armchairs in burgundy, and freestanding dark walnut wardrobe units with brass detailing that anchor the larger suites. Dress-form mannequins printed with Parisian script add a haberdashery whimsy that stops just short of pastiche. The dining room strips the original brickwork back to raw Victorian clay, pairing it with mustard velvet side chairs, marble bistro tops, and a branching brass pendant chandelier that pulls the room toward something warmer and more Continental. The bar, finished in deep navy-painted panelling with brass-footed stools and PH-style dome lamps, settles into the role of a proper Dublin hotel bar without straining for novelty.

"Before I write I just want to acknowledge that the hotel seems to comment on good reviews- We will see what happens here Checked in on a Friday evening. Tried to unpack (don’t like living out of my suitcase!) but this was not practical as there is ZERO cupboard or drawer space. Four coat hangers on hooks supplied. (Management and staff said this is the same in all rooms and it’s an old building. There is room to configure space and provide ample storage. I could think of several ways myself) Staff were disengaged. No one greeted us each time we walked through reception or asked us how we were. We had a light meal on the Friday evening at 8.30pm We waited 10 minutes in restaurant before we saw anyone. Food was ok ( but pricey) but we felt so rushed. Waiter took away my husband’s plate before I had even finished. We were the only people in the restaurant/ bar and were not offered ‘the complimentary drink’. Did not feel like sitting and relaxing where we weren’t very welcome! The bathroom was well equipped and bed comfortable, but the shower head on the ‘rainfall’ shower was blocked. The pressure was bad and it was squirting wrongly and hitting bar overhead. Also there is no hook or rail to hang towel next to the shower so it must go on the floor. The basin had a blockage and was slow draining. I spoke to the manager, Stephen as we left for the morning. He was apologetic, but said all the bedrooms were the same, there was a rail in the bathroom, he would get someone to look at the shower. We returned to our room late afternoon and shower head was cleared and a bottle of Prosecco was left as way of an apology, and three macaroons. (We returned the Prosecco as we wouldn’t drink it. Ate the macaroons! The manager asked if we would like non- alcoholic drinks but it shouldn’t be up to us to suggest how complaints should be addressed!) The basin remained slow draining. We had breakfast on Sunday morning. Service was virtually non-existent. Coffee was brought to my husband and hot breakfasts delivered but we then had to physically go to the bar to ask for more toast & butter. No one checked if we were ok, no coffee refill. I had vegetarian breakfast and my husband had the full Irish. We both had poached eggs. They were hard and it was the driest breakfast ever. Mushroom I suspect had been microwaved about an hour before. There were three waiting staff, mostly chatting in the bar area. We waited 10 minutes before finding a staff member to get toast. The breakfast room was full. Continental section was beautifully arranged but impractical. Where to put the huge cheese and meat domes while holding a plate? The hotel is beautifully decorated but it’s definitely style over substance. The ‘welcome cookie’ was like a Farley’s rusk. I’d rather have a kettle in my room to make a cup of tea than a booklet of haikus. This is not what I would expect of a fairly premium rate hotel. What I do expect is not to live like a student with my clothes on the floor or draped over a chair, and a good level of service. The view of the bins was not the best either! We love Dublin but will be staying somewhere else next time."

"The Wilder has been a profound disappointment in almost every way. Ridiculous lack of clothing storage in room, less than mediocre breakfast & staff with no apparent enthusiasm"

"Stayed in March for a city break. Great location, everywhere very walkable. Rooms on the smaller side but comfortable. Great water pressure and pretty bathrooms. Breakfast in the restaurant was one of the best I have ever encountered. And the staff from all over the world couldn’t have been more helpful in all respects. Would highly recommend."

"Outstanding experience. Service was great. Room was very nice. There were little touches , like turn down service and Nespresso in the room that made the stay extra special."
