PB hotel design editorial

One of Ireland's most distinguished Palladian estates, the house at the heart of Carton House dates to the 1740s, when Richard Cassels — the German-born architect responsible for Leinster House and Russborough — remodelled an earlier structure for the 19th Earl of Kildare into the limestone seat you see today. The symmetrical garden front, with its projecting portico and flanking wings stepping back across formal parterres of clipped yew and gravel, carries that characteristic Cassels composure: weighty without being heavy, aristocratic without self-parody. Acquired by the Fairmont group and developed as a resort, the property now runs to 165 rooms spread across the main house and a more recent wing, set within 1,100 acres of demesne that include two championship golf courses. Inside, the interiors balance period deference with the practicalities of a working resort hotel. Bedroom suites in the original house layer damask-patterned wallpapers and William Morris-print scatter cushions against four-poster beds with tan leather headboards, the tall sash windows framing views directly across Cassels's garden geometry. Elsewhere, a newer clubhouse bar deploys deep navy panelling, exposed timber roof trusses, cantilevered antler-style chandeliers, and red leather banquette seating in a register closer to a confident Irish sporting club than to the Georgian house it serves. The spa, housed in a separate pavilion, introduces a vaulted pool hall with white arched ribs and a central skylight — a contemporary counterpoint to the estate's eighteenth-century stone confidence.

"Its 1040pm (2240), and I am listening to a drain cleaning lorry outside of my bedroom. I have an 0600 start tomorrow. How can this happen at this class of hotel? Bedrooms are for sleeping, not maintenance noise at this time of night."

"Honest review from a travel advisor… We got gifted a stay in this hotel last night, not sure what to expect as we had seen so many good and bad reviews…. We drove into the estate grounds and they are so stunning and dramatic, it looked so beautiful we were excited for our stay. We went to valet parking there was no concierge or parking attendant but we headed inside… a lovely young gentleman greeted us and took care of our car and belongings. We made our way to reception with no greeting or warmth from the lady checking us in, my husband was enquiring about a room upgrade and adding extras to our stay, she wasn’t interested and give us our room cards and carried on… we were quite shocked, never in any hotel have I ever felt so unwelcome! We made our way to our room, the glass corridors in the building are stunning and it’s beautiful. We arrived in our room and got ready for the spa. The spa was easy to find and when we got there we were told the jacuzzis weren’t working… The pool water was cold so we headed into the sauna, I love a jacuzzi but apparently they have been broken for some time! Leaving the spa we went to get our dressing gowns only to have some dirty cold water dripping on them from above.. we noticed patches along the roof with dripping water… the spa doors were filthy definitely not a spa we expected for a 5star hotel!! We went back to our room, we had arrived late so just decided to get some rest… I have never came across this before but there was a very bright green light flashing on the thermostat all night! Next morning we decided the spa was not for us! Whilst getting changed we started to notice things. There were stains down the bottom base of our bed, broken glass tiles and worse of all pubic hairs on the bath mat…. I went to use the mat and cause myself bruising as the bath was so slippy over the large granite side… no absolute no… We grabbed our bags and went to leave… my husband had been speaking to a manager and she was lovely she apologised for what we had experienced and offered us a reduced stay… No thank you, she informed me of a history tour that was happening so I jumped on it was fabulous, why this wasn’t mentioned upon checking in I don’t know, she treated us to a scone and soft drink and was very apologetic… It’s actually so disappointing to see something that could be so amazing not be due to a few people not fulfilling their roles… highly disappointing…not a 5star experience"

"We stayed in night here in a B&B basis last month. It was for my husband's birthday. From start to finish it was a glorious pleasure to be here. The drive up to the house is a visual feast for the eyes, inside is stunning, marrying old with modern. Seamless check in for our Garden terrace room. The room was very well appointed as was the bathroom, french doors led out to our small garden area. Everything was spotless as you'd expect. Excellent cocktails in the bar area and the staff were very engaging. Breakfast next morning was fresh and delicious with a great choice. Hope to stay here again."
