PB hotel design editorial

Herbert Herbert, the second Earl of Kenmare, built his family's country retreat on the southwestern shore of Lough Leane in the 1870s, placing it at the edge of what would become Killarney National Park — a setting so cinematically Irish that the parkland views visible from the guest rooms look almost composed. That Victorian manor, rendered in pale limestone roughcast with steep Gothic gables, decorative bargeboards, and a carved armorial roundel above the entrance, is now Cahernane House Hotel, a 38-room property whose architecture carries a quiet authority that most purpose-built hotels spend fortunes trying to manufacture. Inside, the approach holds to the manor's original domestic register rather than reaching for grand-hotel formality. The dining room retains its plasterwork ceiling roses, paired crystal chandeliers, and a white marble fireplace, with sage-green swag curtains and botanical-patterned wallpaper in taupe and ivory reinforcing the drawing-room atmosphere. Guest rooms layer deep-buttoned upholstered headboards, herringbone and wide-plank timber floors, antique walnut pedestal tables, and silk-blend botanical wallcoverings against views over the demesne parkland. The most distinctive move is the cellar bar, where whitewashed rubble-stone vaulting has been left entirely exposed beneath a circular brass pendant light, the raw medieval texture set against a fitted oak back bar with brass tap fixtures and a geometric Encaustic tile floor — a combination that roots the contemporary hospitality programme firmly in the geology of Kerry itself.

"Attended a Wedding here at the weekend, checked in on Thursday and staff were very welcoming. Room/Suite was beautiful, dressing area, seating area king size bed and large ensuite with large shower and roll top bath. Food in the bar was great and so was the Red Ale. The Wedding on Friday was brilliant great staff, great food, great atmosphere. Breakfast every morning was beautifully cooked and served with all the tea and toast you could want. Checked out Sunday will definitely be back."

"We had the pleasure of staying at Cahernane House Hotel again this past weekend, and somehow it managed to exceed our expectations for the second time. From the moment you arrive, there’s a warmth and charm about the place that immediately makes you feel welcome. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful — full of character, elegance, and that perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. The rooms are spacious, spotless, and incredibly comfortable, with every detail thoughtfully considered. It’s the kind of place where you instantly relax. What truly makes Cahernane special, though, is the staff. Every single team member we encountered was friendly, professional, and genuinely attentive. Nothing felt like too much trouble, and their warm hospitality really elevates the whole experience. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is calm, cosy, and luxurious without ever feeling formal or stuffy. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet drink, relaxing in your room, or simply taking in the surroundings, everything feels effortless and special. It’s rare to find somewhere that delivers consistently, but Cahernane has absolutely done that for us. Our second stay was just as fantastic as our first, and we’re already looking forward to returning again. A truly exceptional place to stay. Highly recommend."

"Good evening. Its not often that I am stuck for words but I am now... im just home after the most wonderful experience in cahernane.. I have visited a fair proportion of the blue book houses and this tops the list.. In particular I would like to mention Veronica. Her manner.. her professionalism ... her thoughtfulness and genuine interest in all the guests is outstanding. We were blown away by the herbert suite... ive been blessed to have stayed in one or two before but this brought tears to my eyes... I cannot thank you all enough.. I cannot wait to tell all at work about my experience. As a nurse i know my colleagues appreciate quality time away. Once again thank you. And thanks to mary for the chats during breakfast the kind gentleman who boosted thr heat for us..and the staff in the cellar.. outstanding quality food. Till next time Olga"

"A warm welcome on a rainy day, fire blazing, cheerful comprehensive welcome, offers to help us with baggage. Wonderful old mansion house at the end of a long driveway past sheep and cows in the field. Room was not large but beautifully decorated in the manor style. Our room had a little patio looking out to gardens and fields. Coffee/ Tea biscuits in room. Beautiful residents lounge, fantastic cellar bar / dining with a terrific barman (Paul) ? white hair like me) where we had great lunch, fine selection of local beers, ciders and wine. Dinner and breakfast boast a wonderful local ingredients focused menu and excellent service, (Stephen). Warm friendly staff who live locally and offer helpful advice on what to do around the area."
