PB hotel design editorial

Herbert Herbert, the second Earl of Kenmare, built his family's country retreat on the southwestern shore of Lough Leane in the 1870s, placing it at the edge of what would become Killarney National Park — a setting so cinematically Irish that the parkland views visible from the guest rooms look almost composed. That Victorian manor, rendered in pale limestone roughcast with steep Gothic gables, decorative bargeboards, and a carved armorial roundel above the entrance, is now Cahernane House Hotel, a 38-room property whose architecture carries a quiet authority that most purpose-built hotels spend fortunes trying to manufacture. Inside, the approach holds to the manor's original domestic register rather than reaching for grand-hotel formality. The dining room retains its plasterwork ceiling roses, paired crystal chandeliers, and a white marble fireplace, with sage-green swag curtains and botanical-patterned wallpaper in taupe and ivory reinforcing the drawing-room atmosphere. Guest rooms layer deep-buttoned upholstered headboards, herringbone and wide-plank timber floors, antique walnut pedestal tables, and silk-blend botanical wallcoverings against views over the demesne parkland. The most distinctive move is the cellar bar, where whitewashed rubble-stone vaulting has been left entirely exposed beneath a circular brass pendant light, the raw medieval texture set against a fitted oak back bar with brass tap fixtures and a geometric Encaustic tile floor — a combination that roots the contemporary hospitality programme firmly in the geology of Kerry itself.

"We had a wedding celebration April 19 th. It was nothing short of “ a fairytale “ as the bride herself described. We had a drinks reception in the Drawing Room that moved out onto the beautiful grounds for photos. Following a top notch meal in the Herbert’s Dining Hall, we moved to the Cellar Bar to dance and listen to the band until the wee hours. The bride and groom relaxed and spent the night in the Muckross Suite afterwards. The detailed and personal attention provided by the staff made it all so special. A big Thanks to Emer who communicated and facilitated the event from start to finish. Highly recommend this venue. A hidden treasure in Killarney."

"Dear Emer and Team at Cahernane, I just wanted to say a sincere thank you for all your help in organising Emma’s Hen Weekend. Everyone had such a fantastic time and hasn’t stopped praising it since. Everything was so easy from start to finish, and we really appreciated how accommodating and helpful everyone was, nothing ever felt like too much trouble. The food and accommodation were excellent, and the setting itself made the whole weekend feel really special. Thank you as well for facilitating the flower arranging, the dinner, our breakfast space, and helping us get set up with the games. It all came together seamlessly. Your service throughout was exceptional and made a real difference to the experience for all of us. Thanks again for everything Emer. I’ll definitely be recommending The Cahernane. Best wishes and take care, Susie"

"We had the most magical wedding at Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney, and it exceeded every expectation. From our first enquiry through to the morning after, the entire experience was handled with warmth, professionalism, and exceptional care. Emer, the Hotel Manager and wedding coordinator, made the planning process smooth and enjoyable. She was attentive, responsive, and full of thoughtful ideas that perfectly elevated our vision while handling every detail with calm expertise. Thanks to her and the team, we felt completely supported and stress-free in the lead-up to our day. On the wedding itself, the staff were outstanding, warm, attentive, and genuinely hospitable. They anticipated every need and ensured both we and our guests felt wonderfully looked after. The rooms are beautiful: elegant, spacious, and luxuriously comfortable with stunning views. Our master suite and the guest rooms received constant compliments. The food was a highlight, especially the wedding dinner. Every course was flawlessly executed using the finest local Kerry produce, beautifully presented, full of flavour, and memorable. Our guests are still talking about it. Above all, the setting is pure magic. Nestled in Killarney National Park with mountains and lakes as the backdrop, Cahernane House created an enchanting, romantic atmosphere that everyone adored. It was the most joyful and seamless celebration we could have imagined, enjoyed thoroughly by every single guest. Cahernane House didn’t just host our wedding, they helped make it the happiest day of our lives. We cannot recommend it highly enough."

"Emmer and Lorraine were amazing, as well as Veronica, Katie, Hayden and Todd! Every small detail and accommodation was made for our special day (married at Cahernane House Hotel). We flew from the US to Ireland to be married and Cahernane was the BEST choice hands down after searching several hotels in the area. The location was perfect; it was only a few minutes from Killarney Park/Muckross and downtown Killarney for shopping/food/fuel. Our room was one of the best in the hotel with amazing countryside view of the Killarney Park. The bed was the softest I have ever slept on and bathroom was VERY sophisticated. The bedroom was luxurious, timeless and clean. Hotel staff interacted and assisted our wedding contractors (hair, make-up photography and officiant). Staff even provided me temporary access to another room while my bride was getting ready. The Cellar Bar and Herbert dining areas were amazing and made great photo backdrops (the food was not bad either ; ). The outside/courtyard areas were very refreshing, peaceful and relaxing. We never felt rushed or left needing anything."
