PB hotel design editorial

Herbert Herbert, the second Earl of Kenmare, built his family's country retreat on the southwestern shore of Lough Leane in the 1870s, placing it at the edge of what would become Killarney National Park — a setting so cinematically Irish that the parkland views visible from the guest rooms look almost composed. That Victorian manor, rendered in pale limestone roughcast with steep Gothic gables, decorative bargeboards, and a carved armorial roundel above the entrance, is now Cahernane House Hotel, a 38-room property whose architecture carries a quiet authority that most purpose-built hotels spend fortunes trying to manufacture. Inside, the approach holds to the manor's original domestic register rather than reaching for grand-hotel formality. The dining room retains its plasterwork ceiling roses, paired crystal chandeliers, and a white marble fireplace, with sage-green swag curtains and botanical-patterned wallpaper in taupe and ivory reinforcing the drawing-room atmosphere. Guest rooms layer deep-buttoned upholstered headboards, herringbone and wide-plank timber floors, antique walnut pedestal tables, and silk-blend botanical wallcoverings against views over the demesne parkland. The most distinctive move is the cellar bar, where whitewashed rubble-stone vaulting has been left entirely exposed beneath a circular brass pendant light, the raw medieval texture set against a fitted oak back bar with brass tap fixtures and a geometric Encaustic tile floor — a combination that roots the contemporary hospitality programme firmly in the geology of Kerry itself.

"Booked in for one night as attending an event nearby. Very impressive from outside and receptionist who checked us in was extremely professional and friendly. We were given a card to get a free prosecco in the bar if we wished. Our room was on the 4th floor and while nicely decorated it was a bit dull especially given there were only 2 small windows, however view out to front of hotel & garden was lovely. Fine sized bathroom with lovely shower & great pressure in the water. Lovely towels and toiletries provided. We had food in the cellar bar and it was fine - fish & chips and a sirloin steak. We returned later that evening around 10.45pm and had a drink, very friendly barman who definitely made up for lack of atmosphere in the bar. Breakfast was probably where we felt the hotel was below par - fruit already in little bowls and consisted of melon & apples. Had little jars of yogurt with coulis and some granola in a dish to add. No cereals on offer. We both had full irish - 1 sausage, 2 rashers, half a black and white pudding, half a big mushroom, half a tomato and a fried egg. My partner doesn't eat eggs but was not offered extra of anything else instead. We were not offered any toast so had some brown bread that was on the buffet counter. There was a small selection of small scones & croissants. While hot food was cooked to order, there was nothing special about it. Overall, for a 4 star hotel we expected better."

"This the most wonderful hotel to stay at. Its a characterful country house hotel set in amazing rolling countryside. The rooms are full of charm with an ambience that suits the hotel. They are spotlessly clean. The staff are truly amazing and so helpful and considerate. We didn’t avail of the restaurant as we were going to a show at the INEC; which by the way its only a short walk to the INEC. The breakfast was very good. I did go the cellar bar and had a pre-show drink great selection of Irish spirits. I would strongly recommend a stay at this lovelyl hotel"

"Our stay at Cahernane House was absolutely magical. The staff went out of thir way for us and we appreciated the amazing customer service. From check in to check out, everyone was wonderfully kind and accomodating. We had a private history tour, rode bikes on the tree lined drive and around the property, and ate dinner the the Cellar bar. Breakfast was delicious as well. We stayed in a beautiful room in the Coach House, which had a terrace giving us a gorgeous view of the mountains. When we left, we were disappointed that we had not booked more nights--we would have loved to have stayed longer. I highly recommend staying at Cahernane House--it is in a perfect location in Killarney to explore the city, the Ring of Kerry and other local sites."

"We spent a lovely couple of days here while visiting Ireland. The room had amazing views and staff were so friendly. I would like to give a special shoutout to Jack and Emily in the bar, amazing cocktails and they were happy to answer all our questions about the property and Killarney town. We will be back!"

"An absolutely gorgeous Manor Home that makes you feel like you have stepped into Irish history and culture. Our room was beautiful and the windows looked out over an idyllic field filled with deer every morning and afternoon. The hotel provided complementary bikes that ride all through Killarney National Park. The hotel is perfectly situated between the park and downtown Killarney. The breakfast was delicious. We wished he had stayed longer than three days. I highly recommend this hotel."
