PB hotel design editorial

Built for the Earls of Dunraven between 1832 and 1862 to designs attributed to the English architect James Pain and later refined by P.C. Hardwick, the Gothic Revival manor on the banks of the River Maigue in County Limerick is among Ireland's most architecturally serious country houses — a limestone pile of turrets, oriel windows, gargoyles, and a great hall whose ambition rivals anything produced by the Victorian aristocracy in Britain. Adare Manor converted to a hotel in 1988 and underwent a transformative €60 million restoration and expansion completed in 2017, nearly doubling room count to 104 keys while preserving the integrity of the original structure. The interiors sustain the house's period weight without retreating into fusty pastiche. Guest rooms in the original manor carry Flemish tapestries as headboards above mahogany beds, Waterford crystal chandeliers dropping into coffered ceilings, and leaded mullioned bay windows framing the Robert Trent Jones Snr.-designed championship golf course beyond. The lodge wing rooms, by contrast, take a lighter touch — damask wallpapers, tufted armchairs, swagged curtains in sage and ivory. The restaurant, housed in a glassed barrel-vaulted addition, sets ebonised wall panelling and burgundy leather banquette seating against the blue glow of a central lantern roof, contemporary without disrupting the property's governing mood. The lounge, with its warm timber panelling, deep crimson velvet chairs, and brass pendant lighting, carries the atmosphere of a private members' library rather than a hotel lobby.

"Adare Manor Is Beyond 5 Stars Adare Manor is not just a hotel — it feels like staying in a real luxury castle. The entire property is absolutely breathtaking, from the stunning architecture and grounds to the incredible interiors and attention to detail. Honestly, 5 stars feels far too little for a place like this. Everything about the experience is on another level. The rooms are luxurious and immaculate, the food is exceptional, and the service is some of the best we have ever experienced. Every member of staff made us feel genuinely welcome and went above and beyond throughout our stay. There is such an elegant yet relaxing atmosphere throughout the manor, making it feel truly special from start to finish. This is one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed and somewhere everyone should experience at least once."

"There are beautiful hotels, and then there are places that stay with you long after you leave. Adare Manor was that kind of experience for us. From the moment we arrived, everything felt thoughtful, welcoming, and quietly refined without ever feeling formal or stiff. We loved every part of our stay — biking the grounds, visiting Harry Lowes Chocolate Shop, enjoying the golf simulator at the Padel Club, and especially our evening at the Michelin-starred Oak Room, where the birthday touches were so genuinely appreciated. What stood out most was how personal the experience felt. The people at Adare Manor have mastered the art of hospitality in a way that is rare today. We truly did not want to leave."

"Adare Manor was a beautiful experience. It has changed immeasurably since I was there over forty yeears ago, but the new buildings match and complement the old buildings and they reflect a graciousness from a previous era."
