PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the volcanic clifftop of Vulcano, southernmost of the Aeolian Islands, where lava-hardened terrain drops sharply into the Tyrrhenian Sea, Therasia Resort Sea and Spa is built from the island itself — low whitewashed volumes arranged in the Aeolian vernacular, their cubic forms and arched loggias echoing the agricultural architecture that has defined this archipelago for centuries. The aerial view confirms how closely the property hugs the promontory's edge, its terraced layout cascading toward the water with a curved infinity pool fringed by barrel cacti that read as both ornamental choice and geological commentary on the volcanic soil beneath. Inside, the rooms move between two registers: some dressed in warm terracotta and taupe plasterwork with tufted ivory headboards and ceramic-tiled balcony rails in cobalt blue — a colour borrowed from traditional Sicilian majolica — while others lean into bleached linen tones and white herringbone-tiled floors that amplify the Mediterranean light flooding in from sea-facing terraces. The outdoor restaurant terrace, shaded by white-painted pergolas hung with pierced Moroccan-style lanterns, frames a panorama across to the dark silhouettes of Lipari and Salina at dusk, rattan-cord chairs drawn up to teak-topped tables set with hand-painted ceramic glassware. The whole property carries the feeling of a private Aeolian estate rather than a managed resort — unhurried, rooted, and shaped by an island that was still forming when the Greeks first named these waters.

Therasia Resort Sea and Spa Reviews

"We had a magical 4 nights - thanks to the dreamy sunsets, the breathtaking view of all the other islands (having stayed on 3), and most importantly each team member at the hotel. You were all very professional, but fun; very kind and very generous, making a birthday extra special and memorable. Heartfelt thanks to ALL. Lisa & Chris, England. Ps. Early/mid May a great, peaceful time to visit."

"My wife and I stayed at Therasia Resort for five nights on our honeymoon, searching for our own version of a “White Lotus” escape—remote, luxurious, peaceful, and memorable. I can confidently say the experience matched the expectation. The setting is extraordinary. The views over the surrounding islands and sea are stunning from nearly every corner of the property. Whether sitting by the pool, having breakfast, or simply walking back to the room, the scenery constantly reminded us we were somewhere special. The pools deserve recognition on their own—beautifully designed, relaxing, and perfectly integrated into the landscape. We spent hours simply enjoying the atmosphere. Our room was spotless, well stocked, comfortable, and exactly what we hoped for after long travel days. Housekeeping and overall upkeep throughout the resort were excellent. One of the highlights each morning was breakfast. The buffet was genuinely delightful, with homemade pastries and breads that felt more artisan bakery than hotel breakfast. It set the tone for the day and became something we looked forward to. The staff elevated the experience tremendously. Everyone was kind, attentive, and incredibly helpful. They arranged transportation, booked activities, provided clear timelines, answered every question we had, and gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and experiences around town. For English-speaking travelers, communication was effortless—the staff’s English was excellent, making planning stress-free. The spa experience was another standout. We booked the seven-treatment package and absolutely loved it. The spa facilities and massage team were exceptional and created one of the most relaxing experiences of our honeymoon. For anyone concerned about logistics: getting there was easier than expected, and I highly recommend booking the shuttle service directly through the resort. It removes a major travel variable and makes arrival seamless. Food and drink pricing at the resort felt comparable to other luxury European or U.S. resorts—not inexpensive, but fair relative to the level of service and experience. The only note for future visitors: we traveled early in the tourist season and often found ourselves alone at restaurants in town. This wasn’t necessarily negative—we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere—but travelers looking for a more energetic island vibe may want to visit slightly later in the season. Overall, Therasia delivered exactly what we hoped our honeymoon would be: peaceful, luxurious, beautiful, and unforgettable. If you’re looking for a remote island resort experience where expectations meet reality, this place is worth serious consideration."

"The good bits: Beautiful location Great sunsets Plenty of places inside and out to relax. Michelin star taster menu in a beautiful location, fabulous cuisine plus fun at the end when the chefs created your personal dessert from ingredients at the Chefs’ table. Amazing choice at breakfast Fantastic hike to the crater The town has a lovely relaxed and local vibe We had a very relaxed lunch at a beach bar and had dinner in town one night. The disappointing bits We were left waiting at the port for the hotel mini bus to pick us up and when it arrived and wasn’t particularly smart and the seat belts were not working. At the end of the stay the minibus went off to the port with our luggage but without us while we were settling our bill. The mini bus is only complementary if you go when the bus is already scheduled to go. It there is not a specific schedule they can share with you. Outside of this schedule it’s 10 euros. There is nothing in the rooms or around the hotel to promote the hotel services eg spa facilities, local information and things to do: you have to keep asking reception which is wearisome. Bar staff were far too slow at sunset so we gave up. Bathroom was very small. Overall not worth the premium price to stay there but worth visiting for the tasting menu."
