PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the vertiginous limestone cliffs above Amalfi town, a thirteenth-century Capuchin monastery has spent more of its existence as a hotel than as a place of worship — a transformation that began in 1825 when it welcomed its first guests, making the Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel one of the oldest continuously operating hotels on the entire coast. The cloister, the vaulted chapter rooms, the monks' cells: all of it pressed into hospitality service, with the dramatic consequence that guests sleep beneath groin-vaulted ceilings and move between spaces that retain the geometry of medieval religious architecture while accommodating thoroughly contemporary furniture. The 2021 renovation, carried out under the Anantara flag, layered a considered contemporary interior sensibility over the existing bones without obscuring them. Suites pair original terracotta-tiled floors and whitewashed barrel vaults with low-slung lounge chairs in grey wool bouclé, walnut-framed room dividers fitted with arched mirrors, and warm ochre linen cushions — a palette that echoes the cliff face outside rather than competing with it. Arched floor mirrors, Tolomeo-style reading lamps, and dark marble bathroom surrounds complete a register that sits closer to a well-appointed Milanese apartment than a resort. On the open terraces, hand-painted Vietri ceramic chargers and dark timber dining chairs frame views across the Tyrrhenian that the monks, one suspects, appreciated for entirely different reasons.

"Simply stunning hotel overlooking the sea. Lemon trees, bougainvillea and lupina pergolas with the most amazing colours. The suite was spacious and beautifully decorated with great attention to details. Breakfast was served a la carte with a menu for freshly cooked items and all overlooking the ocean. The staff was very polite, personable which made the stay perfect. Since the hotel used to be a convent, it still has an intact cloister and a monk which takes you back in history about this amazing place. The fine dining restaurant offered an incredible dinner menu with exciting flavor combinations without being pretentious. You can sense that the staff is incredible proud and involved in every step. The pool view is incredible and the lemon sorbet served was a perfect gift on a hot day. Make sure to ask for their special sourced tomatoes which have the most amazing flavour! Can’t wait to go back!!!"

"I went with my husband for my birthday. I wanted simple and luxurious and the hotel totally hit the spot for me. We were upgraded to an apartment with a hot tub. Breakfast on the terrace was lovely, as was the pool and the easy walk into town - about 10 minutes. We didn't eat in the hotel or use the spa, which are expensive. We flew to Naples and arrived late on Thursday and stayed in a cheap hotel in Naples and spent the day sight seeing then got a taxi to the hotel (approx £200). On Saturday we go a boat to Positano - but didn't stay long, it isn't as lovely as Amalfi and we didn't want to be restricted waiting for a boat back. We walked the Path of the Lemons on Sunday - walking to the start. It was a lovely walk that gave a good sense of the area. We left the hotel on Monday and got a taxi to Pompeii and then got the train - right next to the entrance - into Naples and then a taxi (£22) to the airport which took about half an hour in the rush hour. This was perfect for a couple of days. I was worried by one review that had said in a different location this wouldn't be a 5 star hotel. I couldn't disagree more. It's a beautiful hotel, with great helpful friendly staff and I would highly recommend."
