PB hotel design editorial

Grafted into a limestone cliff between Amalfi and Praiano, where a medieval watchtower of rough-cut stone still anchors the seaward face of the building, Borgo Santandrea opened in 2021 after an extensive renovation of a mid-century structure that had long watched over this particular crescent of shingle beach. The tower, visible in the images with its pointed Gothic-arched openings, predates everything else here by several centuries, and the hotel's most persuasive design move is simply leaving it alone — letting that ancient masonry stand in contrast to the whitewashed contemporary volumes rising above it in terraced layers, vine-draped pergolas softening the transition between built form and cliff face. The interiors were developed with a confident, thoroughly Mediterranean sensibility: vaulted ceilings in the guestrooms carry arched French doors that frame the Tyrrhenian in wide compositions of blue and white, while the floors carry hand-glazed ceramic tiles in bold chevron and checkerboard geometries — cobalt against cream — that connect the rooms directly to the Vietri sul Mare tile tradition of the broader Campanian coast. Midcentury Italian furniture, teak-framed armchairs upholstered in deep navy, ceramic bedside lamps painted with coastal motifs, and black-and-white photographic prints give each room the atmosphere of a well-loved private villa rather than a hotel corridor replicated at scale. The terrace bar, furnished with rattan-and-teak lounge seating beneath a white pergola colonnade, positions the dramatic cliff backdrop as the dominant architectural element — which, frankly, it always was.

"Great place! Carmen the Sommelier was amazing, gave us a great recommendation for our red wine. All the staff members are very kind and our room had a great view to the ocean. 100%!"

"Our stay at Borgo Santandrea was one of the finest hospitality experiences we have had anywhere in the world. What makes this property so extraordinary is that it combines the beauty and exclusivity of a world-class luxury hotel with the warmth and soul of a deeply personal experience where every guest truly feels seen. The renovation of this historic property is simply spectacular. Borgo Santandrea has managed to preserve the timeless elegance of the Amalfi Coast while creating a design experience that feels refined, serene, and completely unique. Every detail — from the architecture to the interiors to the positioning above the sea — reflects exceptional taste and vision. The beach club is extraordinary and became one of our favorite places during our anniversary trip. Alessandro, the beach club director, embodies the spirit of the hotel perfectly. Warm, attentive, gracious, and endlessly accommodating, he helped create days that felt peaceful, luxurious, and effortless. Swimming in the Mediterranean, relaxing privately away from the crowds, and dining directly by the water became unforgettable memories. The private boat rides were another highlight and allowed us to experience the Amalfi Coast in its most beautiful form — quiet coves, dramatic cliffs, and the feeling of complete escape. Breakfast each morning was exceptional not only because of the stunning setting and incredible food, but because of Nicola, the breakfast ambassador, whose warmth and attentiveness elevated every morning. Nicola has that rare gift of making hospitality feel deeply personal rather than transactional. He made us feel welcomed, remembered, and genuinely cared for every single day. The yoga sessions with Farida were also a standout experience. Practicing with the sea stretching out before us brought a calm and grounding energy to the trip that perfectly matched the spirit of the property. Farida’s presence, professionalism, and warmth made each session feel restorative and memorable. And yes — the pizza truly may be the best in Amalfi. Most of all, what separates Borgo Santandrea from other luxury hotels is the culture of “unreasonable hospitality” created by Maurizio, Tano, and their remarkable team. Beautiful hotels exist all over the world. What is rare is a hotel where luxury is paired with genuine humanity, kindness, and emotional intelligence. Every interaction carried sincerity, generosity, and pride. Borgo Santandrea is not simply a spectacular hotel. It is a place with soul — led by people who understand that true luxury is how you make people feel."

"If we could give this resort 6/5 we would. One of nicest hotels with most engaged ownership group I have ever seen. Attention to detail is unbelievable. Food was best of our two weeks in Italy."

"Five stars is not enough to describe our stay, experience, and the authentic hospitality at Borgo. The picture perfect landscape and view speaks for itself, each interaction with staff felt like the warmth of the Italian sun, and due to the limited capacity of rooms you feel like you are the only one on property - a gift that made our Amalfi coast stay feel charming and tucked away from other tourists. This hotel’s design was truly the BEST way to experience Amalfi - cliffside, incredible views, rooted in history, and an interior design intentionally crafted to reflect the sea. The beds were the comfiest sleep of the trip, the house keeping service was remarkable, but what really made the difference and solidified this being a 10 star property was the staff. From the moment we checked in, Alessia at the front desk greeted us with a warm smile (and was able to read our tired energy), and helped move our check in process along quickly to get settled in our room - even with an early check in. Nicola and Barbara and the team at breakfast were delightful - now would be a great time to mention the creativity and innovation of the breakfast bar - proudly displayed in their Michelin Star kitchen, and a special experience to have over 50+ serving platters of fresh food to choose from for breakfast. Mino was our first encounter at the Beach restaurant - he as well as the chef took care of my gluten allergy, welcoming me to Borgo with a celiac friendly pizza - YUM! Alessio, Andrea, and Alessandro at the sunset bar gave a phenomenal beverage and aperitivo experience. Again, masters in hospitality and their own personal craft, but felt like a continuation of the amazing hospitality we had already received in the restaurants, really showing the exceptional level of TEAM work and service of the Borgo staff. Perhaps my favorite thing about our stay, were the taxi boats available at the private dock to take you wherever you wanted. Free of charge at your request to Amalfi, all it took was a whatsapp message to the concierge (they give you their number upon arrival), and a walk down to the dock to await the taxi boat - thank you Sebastian and the other drivers for making a short 10 minute boat ride into town feel like a special cruise! I’m almost embarrassed that we were ever torn between staying in Positano or at Borgo in Amalfi. While Positano is a known postcard image (and we loved taking the Borgo Santandrea taxi boat into Positano for a dinner!), Borgo gave me the experience that I want to write home about, and certainly one I hope to return for. It is very apparent the passion that the general manager, Maurizio, leads with. Present in the breakfast room to swap stories with guests, and quick to shake your hand upon arrival or departure. The entire hotel and outstanding hospitality is a clear reflection of his life’s work to serve with heart."
