PB hotel design editorial

Grafted into a limestone cliff between Amalfi and Praiano, where a medieval watchtower of rough-cut stone still anchors the seaward face of the building, Borgo Santandrea opened in 2021 after an extensive renovation of a mid-century structure that had long watched over this particular crescent of shingle beach. The tower, visible in the images with its pointed Gothic-arched openings, predates everything else here by several centuries, and the hotel's most persuasive design move is simply leaving it alone — letting that ancient masonry stand in contrast to the whitewashed contemporary volumes rising above it in terraced layers, vine-draped pergolas softening the transition between built form and cliff face. The interiors were developed with a confident, thoroughly Mediterranean sensibility: vaulted ceilings in the guestrooms carry arched French doors that frame the Tyrrhenian in wide compositions of blue and white, while the floors carry hand-glazed ceramic tiles in bold chevron and checkerboard geometries — cobalt against cream — that connect the rooms directly to the Vietri sul Mare tile tradition of the broader Campanian coast. Midcentury Italian furniture, teak-framed armchairs upholstered in deep navy, ceramic bedside lamps painted with coastal motifs, and black-and-white photographic prints give each room the atmosphere of a well-loved private villa rather than a hotel corridor replicated at scale. The terrace bar, furnished with rattan-and-teak lounge seating beneath a white pergola colonnade, positions the dramatic cliff backdrop as the dominant architectural element — which, frankly, it always was.

"We spent two wonderful days at Borgo Santandrea to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and it was truly unforgettable. This is much more than a hotel: from the moment you arrive, you feel welcomed like part of a family. There is an incredible sense of peace, and the staff are warm, attentive, and always ready to make sure everything is perfect. Every corner of the hotel offers breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast. The food is exceptional too: the pizza at the Beach Club could easily rival the best pizzerias in Naples, while dinner at the Michelin-starred Alici was a truly memorable experience. A magical place where beautiful surroundings, amazing food, and genuine hospitality come together perfectly. We can’t wait to return!"

"Absolutely the most enjoyable hotel on the Amalfi coast. Outstanding remote position with its own beach which alone is virtually unheard of in the Coastal area. This hotel was renovated a few years ago and what an amazing job was done...... serene, clean, modern and the staff do not know what " no " means. They are there to help and suggest in every way and each person is friendly and helpful. The beach area is split into 2 areas, the actual pebble beach ( bring water shoes) and the deck area in front of the restaurant. Lounge chairs are super comfortable and umbrellas are in plenty supply. Drinks and food is available at your chair if needed. You sit close to the dock area and can watch boats dropping people off for lunch, if that bothers you there are more remote areas where you can sit undisturbed. Menu for lunch is perfect and staff are ready to vary it if you need to add or take away from the set menu. This hotel has the most amazing breakfast spread i have ever seen. There is absolutely nothing missing: Breads ( baked in kitchen ) fruits, smoked meats, pastries, cereals, egg station, pasta station, yogurts, 4 different types of local butter, home made cakes and tarts, cheeses and various local honey. In addition pancakes, crepes and french toast. Unbelievable choice of food that just defies the imagination. We had a corner suite with an outside terrace overlooking the ocean that was delightful. You are left alone and every moment is like a dream. Dinners are in 2 restaurants one a Michelin one star that is very nice but a little fancy while the other is much more relaxed and has a very varied menu. I personally do not feel you need to go into Amalfi for dinner but of course everyone has their own view on this. Its crowded and touristy but maybe worth one meal. A real luxury boutique hotel with wonderful staff and a relaxed isolated stay for those who want that. Wonderful !!!!"

"My daughter and I recently spent 4 wonderful nights at Borgo Santandrea. Not only was the hotel absolutely stunning, but our entire experience was fantastic. Our room was beautifully appointed, quiet and comfortable. The food was outstanding, and the views from the restaurants alone are worth the trip. I love that Borgo has three different restaurants, each delicious with many wonderful options. I highly recommend trying the tasting menu at least once. We so enjoyed the private beach club, and had a fun filled day exploring the coast in one of the hotels beautiful boats. But what really made our trip so special were the delightful people who work at Borgo. They were friendly and so incredibly attentive, always making sure we had what we needed. Our stay was perfect in every way, and I am already planning my return."
