PB hotel design editorial

Carved directly into the vertiginous cliffside above Positano, where the SS163 Amalfitana winds between rock face and sea, Hotel Le Agavi claims one of the most dramatically positioned sites on the entire Campanian coast. The property cascades down the hillside in a series of terraced volumes — stone retaining walls, pergola-shaded dining terraces, and a pool deck cantilevered over the water far below — with Positano's chalk-white and terracotta village tumbling toward the beach in the middle distance. The pool itself is among the hotel's most distinctive gestures: an organically shaped basin with a mosaic floor of swirling teal and indigo waves, more artwork than amenity, backed by painted archways that carry the fluid motif onto the surrounding walls. Inside, the interiors move between two registers depending on the room category. The standard accommodation holds to a lighter, more traditional Amalfitano palette — pale ceramic floor tiles, arched French doors opening onto iron balconies, rattan chairs in powdery blue, the sea filling every window. The renovated suites take a more theatrical position: deep cobalt button-tufted headboards rising in full arches to the ceiling, Vietri-style encaustic floor tiles in navy and white geometric patterns, and curtains with bold colour-blocked hems. The restaurant's circular dining room draws the scheme together most confidently, its arched sea-facing windows framing the Tyrrhenian horizon while gilded elliptical ceiling medallions catch the afternoon light above white-draped tables and cane bistro chairs on jade-green majolica-tiled floors.

"There are hotels you stay at, and then there are places that become part of your memories forever. Le Agavi is one of those very rare places. We spent four days here during our journey along the Amalfi Coast, and our experience went far beyond anything we could have imagined. Calling Le Agavi simply a hotel almost feels wrong. It is an experience, a destination and, in many ways, a little private village suspended between the cliffs of Positano and the Mediterranean Sea. The entire property stretches beautifully down the mountainside, from the upper part of the cliff all the way to the sea. There are no traditional hotel corridors or the feeling of being inside one large resort. Instead, rooms and terraces are scattered across the hillside, and every guest seems to have their own little home, their own terrace, their own view and their own corner of this extraordinary landscape. For a few days, you almost feel as though you have become a resident of Positano rather than a hotel guest. You move through charming little pathways surrounded by flowers, lush greenery and Mediterranean plants. You take small stairs, discover hidden corners, terraces and gardens, and suddenly arrive at the pool, the outdoor gym, breakfast, your room or the sea. Even simply moving from one place to another becomes part of the experience. There is something magical about getting slightly lost in these little paths and discovering another breathtaking view around every corner. And connecting this little vertical village is one of Le Agavi's most unique features: its private funicular. In a place like Positano, built dramatically into the cliffs, this is an incredible luxury and becomes part of the charm of staying here. From the very first moment, we were also welcomed with extraordinary warmth, especially by Sonia, who became one of the most beautiful memories of our stay. She welcomed us almost like family, took the time to introduce us to this incredible place and made sure, from beginning to end, that our experience would be unforgettable. We were even given a beautiful room beyond the category we had originally booked. What touched us most was her genuine kindness and generosity. Nothing ever felt forced or simply part of a service, you could feel that she truly cared about making our stay special. Sonia, if you ever read this, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You were an enormous part of why these four days became so unforgettable. And perhaps one of the greatest privileges of this little village is what awaits you at the very bottom of the cliff: Le Agavi's own private beach and direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. In Positano, where access to the sea often means booking a beach club and navigating endless stairs, this is an absolute luxury. The funicular takes you down through the property, followed by an elevator that brings you effortlessly to sea level, where you find sunbeds, a bar and restaurant, and the most incredible blue Mediterranean water. One of my favourite memories was swimming away from the shore and turning around. On one side, you see the wild, untouched cliffs of the Amalfi Coast covered in vegetation; on the other, Positano rises beautifully from the coastline. You are swimming somewhere between untouched nature and one of the most beautiful towns in the world. It is a view and a feeling I will never forget. Having both a beautiful swimming pool overlooking Positano and your own private access to the Mediterranean, all within the same property, is something truly unique. You can have breakfast overlooking the coast, spend the morning by the pool, take the funicular down for a swim in the sea, have lunch by the water and later return to your own terrace, without ever really leaving this little world. The views are almost impossible to describe: From the swimming pool, you have one of the most breathtaking perspectives over Positano and the sea. From breakfast, from the terraces, from the rooms, from the outdoor gym, everywhere you turn, the Mediterranean seems to be framed like a painting. Even the outdoor gym is special. My husband absolutely loved it: hidden among the pathways and vegetation, incredibly peaceful, with another breathtaking view over the sea. We also loved discovering the hotel's garden, where they grow some of their own fruits, vegetables and peppers. It is one of many details that make Le Agavi feel deeply connected to the landscape rather than simply built upon it. The food throughout our stay was wonderful, but above everything else, the people are what make this place exceptional. Every person we encountered; from reception to breakfast, the restaurants, pool, beach and shuttle, they all treated us with genuine kindness and warmth. There is an authenticity and generosity to the hospitality here that is increasingly rare. Even going into Positano becomes part of the magic. The hotel offers both a shuttle service and, wonderfully, a boat taxi that takes you directly into Positano in just a few minutes. Being able to leave this peaceful private world, arrive in the heart of Positano by sea, enjoy the town, and then return to the calm of Le Agavi felt like an incredible privilege. For four days, we never really felt like tourists staying in a hotel. We felt as though we had been given the keys to a secret little village on the Amalfi Coast, surrounded by flowers, gardens, terraces, breathtaking views and impossibly blue water. Truly, Le Agavi is elegant without losing its authenticity, luxurious without feeling impersonal, and spectacular without trying too hard. During our entire journey along the Amalfi Coast, this was the most generous and heartfelt hospitality we experienced. We arrived as guests, but thanks to Sonia and the wonderful team at Le Agavi, we left feeling that, for four beautiful days, we had somehow been allowed to belong there. We will never forget this place, and we truly hope that returning to Le Agavi one day will feel like coming home."
